The release of the 'unique' cover for Wonder Woman 1984 certainly ticked a lot of boxes, and may be peak 2020, but is the tide turning in the comic industry? Are the layoffs at DC a sign of wider changes to come?

It's an inverse of reality, allowing a payoff without investment. Look around the entertainment today: those who did not earn value are doing "updates" to preexisting works which denigrate them. Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr Who, Ghostbusters---all beloved properties which earned their iconic status by hard work; their _titles_ are being used as lubricants to inject failed ideas and ideologies back into culture as if a new sheepskin will disguise the hungry wolf. The overweight woman wants to be attractive, the cowardly soyboy wants to be brave, the pampered feminist with the million-ear audience wants to be oppressed, and all the rest.

Not necessarily, you can't please all the people all the time. I get the general notion of "this product isn't for you, go find something else or make your own. The problem with the mainstream comic companies was that they figured their fanbases were locked in for life and they could make any changes and push any agenda they wanted. Hasn't worked out for them at all, and the new gender swapped MCU will land with a thud... But there isn't anything inherently wrong with "if you dont like it, dont buy it." That's the exact approach taken by all the creators who have gone indie. They aren't going to listen to Twitter activists because they know that isn't their audience.
@SaurontheDeceiver
@SaurontheDeceiver 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I disagree slightly; "If you don't like my comics, don't buy them" isn't necessarily a bad thing to say; some products just don't appeal to everyone. What they say on Twitter these days is more generally "Fuck you, I don't want you to buy my comics because I would rather win a moral victory on Twitter than sell a comic book".

Imagine if we did it the other way around... Stick your head out of your bucket: those traits you find in Women characters can very, very much be found in a lot of Men characters, you're just used to it. Talking down to women is very accepted in a lot of ways. I am not for extremism, or wokeness. But I despise the will to stay encapsulated in a point of view. Try and adopt the one of the people you hate the most. You might find yourself righteous in the end, but you might learn as well. You might also learn and become even righteous-er. Win-win. Next time a feminist or SJW comes at you, sit back, relax, and try and put yourself into a different perspective than the one you always knew. I don't agree with everything, but I also know that no one ever whistled, or made openly sexual or rape-ish remarks towards me in the streets, while being twice my age. It's a thing very few women can say, and it tells something. Maybe in the end, it shouldn't be about antagony, but cooperation. Stop getting defensive when people get aggressive, and teach aggressive people to be less aggressive. Win-win again, and working together towards a more humane future. :3

One reason why Japanese are so slim is because they have a cultural habit of politely but quickly reminding you when you're out of shape. This could even be related to Toyota Kaizen production philosophy which teaches the same approach.

1: As a fully admitted lover of big chicks: They don't look like that. The proportions are way off. 2: Why the fuck would Wonder Woman, the literally crafted by the gods Amazonian who trains constantly for athleticism and muscle mass, be Fat? If your job is built on your physical combat capabilities, your speed and strength... You're going to be fit. How many MMA champions are fat? You want a fat hero? Zephyr, A.K.A Faith Herbert is a perfect example. She's telekinetic. She uses that to manipulate, among other things, her body, so she can fly. Ergo: she does very little exercise. It makes Sense that she'd be overweight. Wonder Woman should Always be fucking Jacked.

Re point 2: Hear me out: this wonder woman art makes perfect sense, if you consider how Greek stuff was adopted by the Romans. See, Roman gladiators were often a bit pudgy because they wanted a layer of fat to mitigate sword cuts, since their loadouts were designed to entertain. And the gladiators are remembered to this day as a grotesque blood sport that was the symptom of a society in decline due to degeneracy. But, gladiators were more than mere slaves. They were part of a propaganda machine (bread and circuses), they were often used to sponsor and promote products, and they were cruel mockeries of former enemies of the Roman empire. Back to Wonder Woman, she's gone from a Greek heroine to a cruel mockery of what she was, existing only to be a lazy advert or propaganda tool. She's being paraded around by people who don't respect her and actively tore down what she is. Just like the Gladiators of yore mocking the Samnites. So, purely by accident, this new body type perfectly represents what she is through the lens of Greco-Roman history.

The one thing about the art that to me sticks out is that it's this style of the last 6-8 years that's slowly gotten more and more popular, I think in part because people who yearn to be an artist can see that and think "gee, I guess I CAN become a paid professional" because the bar has been lowered so much. Most new animated series look ugly and while from a production view it makes sense (simple = easier to animated) for comics and other things, I guess the main draw (pun intended) is that it feels more "real" to people, and by that I mean a whole bunch of them who gawk at Tumblr and think most of it is great and now think they too can do this.

Completely changing their character to fit the "new" times shows no respect towards their original purposes and what they stood for. Some by the companies thinking by complying, throwing money at it and hope it goes away, others by city, county, state mandates and laws. See they hit the politicians first and most politicians. Same with Companies and Corperations neither didn't care as long as the bad PR is out of the spotlight and they make votes and money respectively. However, as you know these "diversity consultants" have no stake in the business, except to make sure everybody follows the "new rules". Thats how a certain 'Anita S.' got so much influence in the gaming industry. Then they work their way to getting rid of the old leadership, a corporate coup d'etat. @@Dagoratho Not true. You can have political stuff in arts...IF...you explore the politics. That means giving voices, faces, humanity and nuance to ideas and opinions you may not like. It's one of the reason good stories with dividing topics that do explore something can be seen as mirrors of our own issues sometimes. But these arrogant, pig-headed, self-righteous leftists activists cannot concieve of a world where their opinion is not absolutely morally the best one and thoroughly believe that even expressingly an idea contrary to their own is some sort of offense on them, their beliefs and the world and balantly make it clear they would silence everyone if they had such power. Good writing with politics is exploring a political concept but fits the world-gun control for example in xmen...would gun ownership go up with random mutants running around and can you blame people for doing so when some angsty teenager can mind rape you if you give them the chance- Exploring a theme like that is political but it also builds a world and human reactions and the consequences of those reaction. In this given example: pranking or tresspassing teenagers might accidentally get shot by spooked guard or home owners more because the mutant scare is up...probably after some big event in world and teenage gangs and groups tend to make dumb choices together and be rebellious.

And it's not left, or even the right what is destroying it. What really is the problem is fear and paranoia, which cause both political options to seek enemies everywhere. Americans aren't the purest nation, but there is still hope for you. Yes, hope. You were born by it, you thrived on it, now it's time to use it again.

I stumbled upon this in a comic store. The curiosity was magnetic. It compelled me to pick it up, and I was as evenly impelled to reach. I flipped the cover and first page (not really bothering to read it), but I did vigorously scan that book for anything reminiscent of the cover and...nothing. It was just a cover; the inside housed a skinny Wonder Woman, and that's all. That truly shocked me, that day.

As a writer myself this does kinda motivate me to be better and “follow my own path” per say. To me it shows that we need new stories as it seems like these stories and characters are beginning to fade away at the hands of “artists” who want just take something loved and recognizable and turn it into a voice for their own BS.

You are parroting the biases outrage from the other side of the coin. People don't bother to read the whole story or even if they do, they just choose to ignore what doesn't fit their agenda. Alec Holowka was an abuser, struggling with the psychological damage inflicted by his abusive father. There was both demons and good will on both sides, but when an abuser is homing in on you, then a troubled childhood is no excuse for letting it pass, especially not when you are co-workers and trying to accomplish something creative. Alec committed suicide not because he was bullied but because it pained him how much suffering his inner demons caused others and himself. The backlash was just a natural consequence of that. Alec also apparently was quite ignorant of lifestyles different than his, and he eventually learned what hardships other people are going through. Night in the Woods is an oustanding meta piece of art also because of this drama of life flowing into the product. I hold no grudge agains Alec or the rest of the crew. Everybody tried to handle a really shitty situation the best they could, and we should actually honor that sacrifice by learning from the game, because in the genre of video games it has a rarely seen and very important message. The whole situation even prompts philosophical ponderings about how greatness necessarily has to be fueled by suffering, and what the karmic balance sheet of that is. Maybe Alec would never have been known for outstanding musical score work if the pain of his childhood experiences hadn't driven him towards musical escapism. And then who knows whether NITW would even have happened in the valuable way it did. And last but not least, summarizing: Don't forget that they were all quirky artists on the project. - It's rock band split kind of drama. That one is full of drugs, violence and suicide but people don't lose their shit over it.

More information on Pickett’s Charge; the attack was ordered originally by Colonel Robert Lee (I do not recognise the Confederacy or any ranks it bestowed so I will be using the ranks obtained in service of the U.S. Army) who passed it on to Major James Longstreet who in turn passed it to Captain George Pickett. Major Longstreet protested strongly against the attack and even against the Battle of Gettysburg itself, advising Colonel Lee the very first night that the Army of Virginia should break towards Washington and dig in between the Army of the Potomac and the capital to force them to attack entrenched positions or leave the capital at their mercy. Colonel Lee said that if the Federal army was still on the field the next day then he would order an attack to which Major Longstreet replied that if they were still there then it was because they wanted the Confederates to attack them which was the best reason not to. When ordered to organise Pickett’s Charge he told Colonel Lee that he had been a soldier amongst soldiers all his life and it was his opinion that no ten thousand soldiers who ever lived could take the Federal position and again advised to dig in between the enemy and Washington. He was again overruled and he dutifully organised the attack. When the time came he was so overcome with the knowledge that he was sending his men to slaughter that when Captain Pickett asked for the order to advance Major Longstreet could not bring himself to say the words and instead simply nodded and looked away in shame. The attack played out exactly as Major Longstreet predicted. Out of 12,500 Confederate soldiers almost 9,000 were killed, wounded, or captured. When the tattered remains of Captain Pickett’s division limped back to their lines Colonel Lee lamented his poor judgment and proclaimed it “all my fault”. Nearly 75% casualties on an attack that he was warned would go bad, in a battle that he was advised against fighting. It was to the great advantage of the Army of the Potomac and General Meade that they faced Colonel Lee those three days in July and not Major Longstreet.

Actually Drinker, the "artist" for that picture said that she was asked to draw a picture that was inspired by Wonder Woman. Her normal "artwork" is supposedly drawing aliens who have normal everyday human bodies? Ummmm. So this picture is supposed to be a female alien, who has a 2020 mom bod, who cosplays as Wonder Woman. Comics used to take me out of the mundane hole we're constantly living in. We all feel, at least once, that we're not going anywhere, that everything is pointless; so it was nice to see people with a point. From heroes willing to sacrifice their lives, to cosmic entities finding their meaning in the universe. But that's all gone now. Now comics are filled with tokenism and petty politics. Heroes that were capable of destroying planets, that reached the end of the physical universe are complaining about pronouns. Trump was literally made into a villain in a Marvel comic. I want my comics back.
