WHEN IS TIKTOK GONNA BE BANNED? before it is (maybe, hopefully i don't know) i wanted to take a little stroll down memory lane to 2020 tiktok. it's absolutely insane. deep tiktok is the bane of my existence. between the oversaturation trend, whipped coffee, the ratatouille musical, straight tiktok, alt tiktok, and deep tiktok, 2020 tiktok was the worst!

i think the problem is too many people in 2020, who usually would, didn’t conform to social standards. they didn’t have any irl friends they needed to act a certain way to keep, so they all decided to have harmless fun doing whatever they wanted! but then when quarantine was over, and these people started wanting IRL friends again, they went back to conforming to social norms, and if you know anything about how bullying works; the 2020 alts are gonna yell about 2024 alts the loudest. they have a lot of internalized embarrassment about it because of all the other people saying it was stupid and embarassing. the discussion just bounces off of itself and creates a culture that encourages bullying others as the new norm online, because that’s what caused all these people to “switch sides” irl

The funniest thing about "POV videos" is that they were literally just sorta simplified gacha stories. For example: themes of school, soulmates, princesses and hated children, teenagers, romanticised mafia gangs and stalkers, popular and trending songs that *sometimes* fits the story, devils and angels, and of course, the "choose your own adventure" tropes. I remember seeing the gacha community get absolutely destroyed back then too, it was the beginning of a new decade and the internet loves to hate on things so eh. no suprises there. 2020 felt like the last year where kids could be kids without so much scrutiny. A lot of people were experimenting with their interests despite the craziness of the world around them, and most of it occurred on TikTok. I would like to add to "fast fashion peaking in 2020 TikTok" that this era literally started the over-obsession with aesthetics. In like 2018, you had the bruh girl and the soft girl, in 2019 the e-girls and at some point the vsco girls, but in 2020? Cottagecore, fairycore, hippies, indie, alt, dark academia, light academia, kidcore, goblincore etc etc. all in one place and time. The obsession was massive, everyone was running after their new favorite aesthetic and wanted to find "the right one for them". This kinda toned down once the clean girl aesthetic became popular and more people moved to a common trend after they had to step outside again, but 2020 fashion completely wrecked style imo. Did it make alternative styles more accessible? Totally. But did it gave rise to Shein and the like and completely wrecked the perception of individual unique style while micro-trending everything? Also yes.

The term straight tiktok, and it being adopted by the whole of TikTok in 2020 to mean basic, always ignites some form of bizzare confusion in me. Before the app blew up in 2020 "straight tiktok" literally meant straight, and the term was used by LGBTQ individuals to describe being shown content that was non-LGBT or downright homophobic. It just so happens that this content was often the most basic on the platform. Idk how the term managed to break containment to the point that no connection is made to "gay tiktok" when people refer to straight tiktok as being JUST basic.

2020 was genuinely just a bombshell of random emotions. Quarantine sucked, but I feel like i had more time having fun while distracting myself from problems, and the more accepting and less judgemental people (if you ignore the toxic side though) just felt nice because everyone was basically going through the same problems and was just fun overall. Was definitely cringe now that we look back to it, but it definitely was.. something.

Oversaturation makes a lot of sense actually. People were scared, lonely and depressed, so they wanted to see more colors and to highlight any part of their day that felt enjoyable. That's why just going to the gas station was worth an "aesthetic" photo. But I feel like it was more than just the aesthetics, it was about finding joy during dark times. Also because of all the restrictions, a lot of people literally could not go anywhere but the gas station and the grocery store for example. But a normal picture at the gas station wouldn't feel that special. Hence, all the filters. Another point I have is that summer was especially depressing for many people because it is the time to be free and have fun, but many were struggling with illnesses, loneliness, burn out, you name it. And again restrictions were still a thing. So folks felt like they "lost the summer" (there's literally a song called "We lost the summer" by TXT made in 2020) so they were compensating with very colorful photos that mimic the feeling of summer. Third of all (and this applies to all 2020 trends like frogs, dalgona, everything) people wanted to feel connection!!! That's why all the trends were so incredibly popular, because everyone wanted to feel like they were a part of something. That's why the oversaturated pictures were also a huge thing.

Alt Tiktok was amazing. My favourite part is that everyone where doing their own DIY with their clothes recycling their old stuff (Such as pants and accesories) and also bringing back mid and late 90s alt fashion but more colorful and creative! I didnt have the chance to be into that trend (Bc I was broke) but now that I can I'm making my own and I feel way more comfortable with my looks!
