The breathable fluid is not only real, a real rat really breathed it to get that shot. (The rat did poop in panic before calming down and they erased the rat poop with CG, but otherwise you are watching an entirely real live demonstration) It was fine afterward and lead a long, happy, comfortable life as James Cameron's housepet. As yet, the breathable fluid has not been used by human divers, and the sequence with Ed Harris was all done with trick photography and Ed Harris holding his breath a lot.

Humans have used it but I'm not sure the depth . . . . . It has been tested with humans.
@k1productions87
@k1productions87 11 ай бұрын
@@fullmoonprepping4024 The first Human tests were the year after this film was made, and yes it works. However, it does not work in the way depicted in the film. Even if your lungs are filled with fluid, the pressure of that fluid is still less than the pressure around you as you drop and you would still get compressed. You'd have to increase the pressure of what you're "breathing" at the same time, and there is no way you could carry enough in your pack to make it work, much less have your body equalize fast enough. Fluid breathing may help when you're already at a certain depth, but then you have other problems as your body could not purge carbon dioxide fast enough, so the time is limited. Plus, once you do drain afterward, the mucus in your lungs would be gone, making you very susceptable to things like pneumonia. Short answer - does the fluid breathing work? Yes. Is it at all practical? No

The Abyss is such a gem of a movie that is often completely overlooked outside of Sci-Fi circles. And yet, despite the age, the movie really holds up rather well in regards to effects and characters.

People have been known to resucitate up to 10 minutes from drowning, in some average high end of the curve, and in extreme cases like half an hour and reportedly an hour. Also drowning in the very cold seems to give extra time and makes up a lot of the extreme cases. Maybe from a cold preservation and/or hybernation shut down mechanism. Such a great movie and scene. Glad it was a classic in my house growunt up! (One of our like 30 or whatever VHS 😆👍)

That is a real thing. People can be revived with no brain damage after drowning in icy water, though it's not a guarantee so don't try it at home. I'm surprised that the general public doesn't really know about it. Guess everyone needs to see The Abyss.

I have to agree with another commenter regarding the Special Edition (Director's Cut). It adds a bit more to the narrative and raises the stakes overall. Great reaction to a great film (though some of the cast absolutely despised making it).

The Special Edition is the cut that those of us who read the novelization wanted to see in the theaters. I was sick that the wave sequence was not there. Finally after like 4 years I got it on Laser-disc. I told every one to avoid the movie in the theaters. When I got the LD spec ed, I showed it to everyone I could.

The movie was always intended to be the Director's Cut but the studio thought the ending too problematic and made them cut it down to a light version that didn't make much sense. Orson Scott Card was asked to write the novel in tandem with the film production and he actually used the original script version as guideline. After a couple of years they finally published the intended version of the movie but interest had already waned. The movie had almost been completely forgotten, though being one of Cameron's best. I hope he gets to make a proper re-master of the full version soon.

@@captbunnykiller1.0It wasn't just that. It was also because the giant wave effects were just too demanding a task for the computers and software they were using in the late 80s. The water tentacle was difficult enough; so difficult in fact that the script was written to potentially exclude it just in case they couldn't finish the effect in time, something they were obviously anticipating Now take the water tentacle and put it on steroids and you get the giant waves. They tried to find a way to do the effect practically but couldn't make it look convincing so it was scrapped

Often overlooked classic. Harris and Mastrantonio were reportedly so traumatized by mishaps and near-drowning experiences in the making of this movie that they won't even discuss it. I'll watch almost anything with Ed Harris in it, and Michael Biehn is great... and seeing Chris Elliott in anything that isn't "Cabin Boy" ('94) (one of the worst movies I've ever seen) is a treat.

Other films about the sea worth reacting to are: 'The Deep' from 1977, 'Dead Calm' from 1989, and 'Deep Blue Sea' from 1999, these are all good films, Madison.

This film is always a favorite of mine; not only for the movie itself but as a father/son bonding moment. I was watching this on cable with my Dad(Retired Major Wallace Zimmerman, of beloved memory since 1992), and as a former cold warrior and later civilian systems engineer/team leader he was of course very fascinated with the tech aspect. But during the moments where everyone was referring to Lindsey(Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) as Queen Bitch, Dad had this smile on his face. And he turned to me and said: "Lindsey isn't a bitch, you know, son. She's an engineer." Especially after he passed away, I always wanted to meet the actress and let her know how impressed my father was with her performance. 😎

The production on this movie was a nightmare as the Cast and crew didn't like working with James Cameron in this project. Ed Harris almost drowned in one scene of the movie and punched Cameron in the face. A hurricane hit the set and filming had to be shut down for a while. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio got up and walked out the set following her CPR scene, and told the crew, " We are not animals!" The cast tore down the set with their bare hands, finally getting rid of all the anger and penned up frustration for working with Cameron. Ed Harris was driving home then pulled his car over and broke down crying. The crew titled this movie THE ABUSE due to the altercations onset.

This is my favorite James Cameron movie. I feel like it is certainly his best writing, and it's the one most personal to him. If you or me had as much technical knowledge of film-making and storytelling (and his legendary obssessiveness) we could make "Aliens" or "Titanic" but only James Cameron could have made The Abyss. The added scenes in the extended version add so much to the story. Shame on whoever recommended this to Madison without insisting she find it.

Not only is the liquid breathing thing real, they _actually_ put a real rat in the fluid for the movie, five actually, for separate takes. They all survived the experience (though the rat that appeared on-screen died of unrelated causes a few weeks before the release. They did _not_ have Ed Harris breathe liquid for real, though. In fact, I think human total liquid breathing is still in the experimental stage, at best. The ending of the director's cut makes a _lot_ more sense, and gives the aliens actual motivation for their actions. The studio made them cut it, maybe just for time reasons, though could also be due to its environmentalist and anti-war messages. That's why you only see a single text message and then everything's suddenly fine.

Actually, Lindsey's revival is not unrealistic--maybe unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibility. People have literally self-revived after having been declared medically dead. It is rare, but even weirder than this. Of course, the message is that Bud pretty much willed Lindsey back to life, but physically it could have happened like this. Maybe she just needed another minute to warm up sufficiently.

Actually Orson Scott Card's novelization made it clear that Lindsey survived because of the aliens' intervention, so that crucial time only began to pass when they left the moon pool to revive Lindsey - who had technically been dead just a few seconds, as far as the necrotization of brain cells was concerned. Cameron just couldn't come up with a way to get that across in the movie, but that was the idea all along.

Hey, Madison! This film is extraordinary! I saw it in high school! Everything in the movie is real except the aliens. We all breathed liquid in our mothers' amniotic sac for nine months! This was a notoriously difficult shoot. The home video release had an extensive documentary that chronicled the production called "Under Pressure". The cast and crew consider their experience in this production to be a benchmark of difficulty against which all their subsequent experiences are measured. "Quit yer whinin'! This ain't nuthin'. I was in 'The Abyss'!" James Cameron developed his reputation as a 'shouter', not a 'screamer', during this movie. Lol. Cameron paid tribute to Ed Harris' portrayal of astronaut and Senator John Glenn in "The Right Stuff" by having him stride triumphantly out of the alien citadel in that hyperbaric suit! Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was pummeled so severely by Ed Harris laying bare-chested on that cold metal deck for take after endless take of the resuscitation scene that she finally flipped out and screamed at Cameron, "That's ENOUGH! We're NOT animals!", and walked off the set. Harris was forced to complete the scene without her. His relief and tearful joy were filmed in her absence with only the camera facing him. It's an amazing piece of acting! The water tentacle's fluidic texture and capacity for facial mimicry were a visual effects milestone. That effect, the liquid T-1000 from "T2: Judgment Day" and the effects in "Jurassic Park" are often cited as the trifecta that propelled the visual effects industry forward by a quantum leap. "The Abyss" is always cited in visual effects retrospectives. The Special Edition has an extraordinary scene in which the aquatic species announces itself to the world by generating titanic TIDAL WAVES that surround EVERY POPULATED LANDMASS ON EARTH to indicate that they have the power to destroy the surface world but have chosen not to. It is a warning not to engage in hostilities and an invitation to collaborate on improving the world for both species to cohabitate. Bud, Lindsey and the crew are altered to survive massive pressure changes and become liaisons between the surface world and the NTIs in the novelization by Orson Scott Card. This was the final role of Biehn's Cameron Trifecta which includes Kyle Reese of "Terminator", Dwayne Hicks of "Aliens" and John Coffey of "The Abyss". If you want to see more evil Biehn, watch "The Divide" where he plays an increasingly unhinged apocalypse survivor. He was also in the second season of "The Mandalorian" as a merc. Buy the Special Edition blu-ray of "The Abyss" and treasure it. It is a unique gem.

The Special Edition gets a little bit more into the alien stuff at the end. It's the better cut IMO, but it is paced a bit slower, and this was at a time in Hollywood where 3 hr films were frowned upon (hence the theatrical release length of Aliens also). This movie still doesn't ia e an "Official" Blu-Ray release, and I'm still mad at Cameron for that (although I do have a bootleg copy). Lol.

Michael Biehn shocked me with his portrayal of Coffey, because at the time I was accustomed to immediately liking his characters, but I could tell almost from the start that this character was going to crack. I wonder how he would have done in the role of Caledon Hockley in _Titanic_ , as Cameron originally considered him for the role until Billy Zane turned in a perfect audition. Who knows, Biehn, a fine actor I've always admired, might have played a stuck-up Cal very well; either that, or he might have played a twitchier, more psychotic Cal, going by this.

In my mind, after blue screen and stop-motion animation, this was another milestone in CGI effects, coming just a little after Young Sherlock Holmes (by Spielberg) which had a CGI glass character (one of the first), and just before Terminator 2, which had more of the similar CGI effects but all throughout the film... Further down the line is Jurassic Park (for it's CGI Dinosaurs), Star Wars The Phantom Menace (for a whole side character made with CGI), The Matrix (for the bullet-time effect), eventually culminating with Avatar (for the still unbelievable 3D-CGI real-life animation of the entire movie). Now CGI is used in almost every movie.

I won't spoil it for you, but the Special Edition is even more epic, as some pretty darn epic stuff was cut out--stuff that makes the story as a whole larger, while losing nothing as the "intimate epic" it is at its core.

The book could take the time to explain the aliens, their technology - like how they could "decompress" the crew etc. The "drowning" sequence is certainly possible - very low temperature drownings have been recovered - I think the record is something like 40 mins. Think the book had Lindsey's time at around 10 mins - so really is possible. Always loved this story, definitely one of my favourites.

Ed Harris won’t give interviews about his experiences filming. If anyone can find one I’d love to see it. I also hear Mary wasn’t so happy with the revival scene, I can understand why. Cameron really pushed the boundaries of cinematography, but he pushed the actors more. Amazing film, but not without some cost to the actors.

Movies often slip past people, especially if they got limited initial release or went up against other blockbusters that split the audience of the day. "The Vast of Night" (2019) is another sleeper that it seems like almost nobody has seen, an easier thing in the streaming release era.

Loved your reaction, Madison! I am older, was 24 yo when I saw this movie in the theater. Even though it was 2 hours & 20 minutes long, it never seemed slow or to drag. Instant classic to me. There is a special edition that was finally released a while back. Adds 30 minutes to the movie, but I love it even more than the original.

Chris Elliott's dad, Bob, was half of comedy duo Bob and Ray. While I enjoyed their act , they weren't goofy like Chris. This is another great James Cameron water adventure. The behind the scenes feature was really good. The Russian water tentacle thing was a nice effect. How long do you think the Bud and Lindsey love story would continue before they got on each other's nerves, again? I'd like to think forever, but I'd say maybe six months, and then Bud would leave the toilet seat up, or would forget the milk,or turned the lawn sprinkler on to early andshe would lose it. Or maybe, just maybe, her close encounter and then her coming back from the dead changed her personality to where everyone DIDN'T hate her. Have to say I've never seen a bad performance by Ed Harris. Not saying he hasn't had one, just saying I haven't seen one. Great job Madison.

If you ever like the movie to rewatch, the "Special Edition" completely changes the motive of the movie from the aliens perspective, and adds more plot points about the 1980's cold war and mans place on the Earth as judged by the aliens. Basically the theatrical version makes it a more dumbed down action movie, and removes the politics that the director intended be in the movie.

It's possible to breathe liquid because fish do it all the time to live. It is also possible for a mammal with lungs (instead of gills) to breathe liquid as long as it has the right properties, such as being biologically inert, having physical properties that allow for it to be taken in and expelled from the lungs normally (enough), and having sufficient oxygen capacity (among other things). It is a thing in real life, and has been for a long time, but it is still experimental. Yes, small animals and maybe some people have actually successfully tried it, experimentally (that's what you just saw--that rat wasn't drowning, he was breathing, as shown). If there were more of a need for liquid breathing, then it might have been developed by now, but there isn't (yet).

Monday May 1st Hi! I really enjoyed this movie and my family too. In fact, I was watching this in the hospital waiting room when my Dad had cancer. A nurse got me and I was in his room when died. So it’s more… I love Everybody Loves Raymond too and I watch it every night until I go to sleep! You have great taste Madison! 😊

Hi Madison, I'm so glad you watched this movie. It's one of my favorites. I wish you'd watched the director's cut. I was lucky enough to see the director's cut in a great movie theater in Los Angeles. Wow! You've got to watch the documentary on the making of The Abyss. Cast and crew went through some real hell. The special effects by ILM were breakthrough and had never been seen before. CPR scenes have been done in other movies, of course, but never have they been done so well as in this one. It's so emotional and gut wrenching. I just read that James Cameron has stated that The Abyss and True Lies will be released in 4K and probably Blu Ray in the second half of 2023.

Anybody else recognize that Michael Biehn character was right. The aliens were going to destroy humanity. His character was portrayed as paranoid and crazy but he was correct. They were going to cause massive tidal waves on the basis of finding humanity was not compassionate enough for their likings. Kinda seems like they should have seen or listen to thousands of examples of the finer arts humanity has produced.

A very good movie Its so stressful but very good. It definitely takes you on an emotional roller coaster. Everyone did a fantastic acting job. The scenes with Lindsey's drowning and her resuscitation are so emotionally intense. Ed Harris emotional performance when they were trying to revive her feels so real. I cry everytime The sea water alien tentacle is the first time movie audiences ever saw that kind of CGI and a few years later it was used to create the T1000 Terminator.

I actually got to see this one in the theatre! I love the lighting of this film (the underwater parts and the alien parts especially), I love the alien creature (it's like these gorgeous beams of light, and I think the characters captured so well how stunned and fascinated and blown away they were by what they were seeing), I love that the alien wasn't menacing, and I love the diversity of the cast. And I will never forget three things: 1. Coffey's death (I remember feeling it was horrific and I was haunted by the sight of everything cracking and caving in) 2. The intensity of Bud trying to save Lindsey, and me crying, thinking she was really dead (major kudus to the makeup department) 3. And though it's a film I don't rewatch often, I always always remember the feeling I got watching it. That it was SO INTENSE, like by the end of the film, I felt like I couldn't breathe because I'd been holding my breath through so many of the intense scenes. So I definitely get what you mean by feeling exhausted afterward. It has such amazing pacing and tension, and you feel like you're right there with them in this enclosed space underwater. Talk about atmospheric experience! Oh, and I remember I fell in love with Ed Harris' beautiful blue eyes. 😍😄

In real life, their voices would all sound funny (like chipmunks) because they'd have to breathe a mixture of oxygen and a lighter gas, such as helium, in order to withstand the pressure down that deep. Remember that everything is at equal pressure down there, including the "air" they breathe, because that's a lot safer and more efficient than having to deal with massive pressure differentials all of the time. It even allows them to use a "moon pool" (open hole on the bottom of the rig) to easily get into and out of the water. Of course, the movie couldn't have them sounding like chipmunks, so it just pretends that this doesn't happen, but in real life, it always does, just like when you inhale from a helium balloon and talk. By the way, for safety, balloon helium is actually about 20% oxygen, much like Earth's atmosphere, plus 80% helium, of course, because inhaling pure helium could actually be fatal. I wonder how many people died before that change was made. 😧
