To be fair though, Pixar has been making excellent movies time and time again, and they usually do deserve to win. Variety for the sake of variety isn't necessary here. Regardless, this kind of discussion just proves the point of the video, which is that these awards are pointless and that it shouldn't be a competition.
@KeybladeMasterAndy5 жыл бұрын
@Minh Hùng Nguyễn Phạm Except for Cars, Cars 2, Monsters University and Monsters, Inc. People always forget Pixar hasn't always won or even been nominated. And even so, the only time they did win and it didn't make a lick of sense was in 2013 for Brave. 2012 was a rare year in which American theatrical animated films were high quality aceoss the board. Brave actually seemed to be one of the weaker films that were nominated. But the real insult is that animation is usually never considered for Best Picture, and awards shows dedicated to the medium have never been televised.
@Ajourneyofknowing5 жыл бұрын
Joshua Hart - No they haven’t. It’s just because they’re an extension of Disney. Group then together for animation & it’s nearly the same win. Present people are forgetting that Pixar used to be independent & in the beginning just relied on Disney for distribution like with Studio Ghibli through the 2000s.

There is another way that we celebrate film. Films that stand the test of time and are culturally important and deemed worthy of preservation are added to the National Film Registry. Some great films that the Oscars barely touched (Groundhog Day, Blade Runner, Alien, Airplane!, This is Spinal Tap, The Big Lebowski, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory) are preserved there. Armed with retrospect, this "Hall of Fame"-style awards could be much more relevant.

You CAN apply those criticisms to disciplines that are meant to be competitive. There are lots of sports teams like the football team of the Netherlands that would've won championships and tournaments in some years but didn't because there were better teams around in the years in which they came close. Quite a few football players might have deserved to win a Ballon d'Or during the last few years if Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi hadn't been around. And of course people constantly argue about who should've won a sports competition, team sports fans say things like "But they played better" "They had more possession" "They created more chances" "Decision X by the referee was unfair" and so on.
@sockself7 жыл бұрын
i agree with what youre saying for the most part. When youre talking about sport having winners though, there are subjective ratings to determine a winner like in gymnastics and synchronised swimming, people may argue the winner but there are criteria that should be followed. Its easy to determine if some movies are better than others by assessing their criteria - editing, acting, composition etc. these are the supposed 'best' films of the year, theyre of a high calibre, its a fine line between all, there are too many components of a film to consider. I dont think subjectivity itself is the issue, more the breadth of subjectivity in a film. same can be said for objective arguments, i can calculate much more accurately how much fuel my car will use to drive 100km on a highway. It becomes much more difficult to calculate how much i would use in the city when there are alot more variables to consider- variations of speed, breaking, other traffic. i kinda rambled there but my main issue was 'sport has a clear winner' but rythmic gymnastics seems pretty subjective to me.

The Academy Awards are ultimately a good thing because they help bring projects like the Wizard of Oz into existence. A film is a huge investment for a company, and winning an Academy Award (or even being nominated, for that matter) provides a massive boost to sales. This is why consistently the "riskier, artsy" films are generally released at the same time, so that they might be topical during the Awards.

The point about how movie making isn't a competition makes no sense. You don't win an oscar, you get awarded an oscar. The "competition" of the oscars is to get the approval of the jury. And what about all the sports and talent shows that determine their winner by a jury? There is debate over who should have won american Idol, yet there is a clear winner.
@LetMeExplainThat7 жыл бұрын
I get what you are saying but 1-you could argue that the rewards just like something like GPA are dependent on your peers ability in the given year as well as yours. It's a relative competition within that time frame alone. 2- things like story, design, filming, all have components that could be evaluated by the experts in the field. The training shows in the dances and the acting, glitches can be spotted in the animations, and even filming and directing could be judged by the quality of the frames and how well they reflect the message of the film 3- you could even argue that beauty and art are not subjective according to some aesthetic philosophers Ps: keep up the good work, I enjoy your channel =)

Timing is also a problem with subscription services' update release schedules. Take the most simple example of a newspaper. If there is nothing happening, but you still have paying customers, as a journalist and editor you have to write and release an article. Sometimes this forced creativity gives yields poor writing, wrongly emphasised topics or trends. With video games and technology it might mean that a company would need to justify their product, or shift their customer's attention away from the it to avoid unnecessary attention to the lack of improvements to the previous edition, where improvement may in fact have been nearly impossible due to limited advancement. I think that psychologically scheduled deadlines is a very powerful restriction that forces people to tackle unforeseen problems, but when it comes to competition; in the market and in art and culture, it may sometimes be a bad idea.

I strongly disagree with this video. First, you can compete in telling stories, as a matter of fact, people do that ALL the time. Amateur writers usually engage in contests where there is going to be one clear winner. You know why you can do that? Because you can judge, objectively, if a story is good or bad. Sure, people might have disagreements in some points, but it is very clear to many that lord of the rings return of the king is a better movie than Taken 3, despite they sharing very little in common besides being the third instalment of the franchise. Second, there are other competitions where there is no direct one on one confrontation and you still declare a winner, like a Kung Fu demonstration or sinchronized swimming. There are scores, penalties and all that good stuff, and you declare a winner at the end. The thing with the academy is that it became the olympic games for movies: the best of the best are there, so it is usually hard to give an edge to any particular movie. Finally: of course sometimes the academy makes a mistake. Sometimes there is a great movie that isn't nominated, sometimes it was even the best movie of that year. That is part of being human. The only arguments that make sense in your video to me are the ones regarding corruption and/or inherent biases of the academy, but that is a problem for any type of award ceremony. You could have something different to celebrate movies, sure, but I don't think the Oscars are bad or futile per se.
@thebravezombies6 жыл бұрын
You forgot about the horrendous voting. Voters rank movies from 1-5 (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th). A movie needs 50% of 1st ranking votes to win. Let's say theirs 3 movies that have 35%, 20%, and 10%. Since no one has reached 50%, the lowest 1st placed movie (10%) is eliminated and is distributed to the other movies depending on their 2nd choice. Basically, a lot of the time the 2nd place movie is picked as a winner because a lot of 1st place votes go to the 2nd choice movies.

The Emmys are different in that you can nominate a show over and over. The same entity has a chance to win again next year and the year after that. As far as these awards shows, I will quote what Jon Stewart said as he won the tenth in a row for Best Late Night show, for The Daily Show - "Years from now, when the earth is just a burning husk and aliens visit, they'll find a box of these and they will know just how predictable these (expletive) things can be."

How else do you propose do recognize talents that aren't based on a specific metric and require judgement from a body or panel. No matter how fair you try to make it, it's always going to be subjective. I think most creative professionals accept this and just accept the praise wherever it comes from. As a filmmaker, I'd accept a glowing review from the most distant corner of the world with the same enthusiasm as winning an Oscar. Who gets to decide what is "supposed" to be competitive? You might say music is not competitive, but as someone who performed in multiple competitive music ensembles, as well as solo competitions, I'd say it very well is. Some may see cheerleading as entertainment as a football game, but I have friends and family who we competitive cheerleaders. Anyone I know that has willingly been a part of something competitive has enjoyed it. Issues like timing are a thing in EVERY competition. The Patriots could play at the exact same level in two different seasons, but one season they might win the Super Bowl and another they might not even make the playoffs, depending on how many other teams there are which are as good or better than them. It doesn't mean that they are worse that year, but if you look at the comparison, it seems that way. It may be the case that the 2018 Patriots are better than every team in 2017, but the Eagles were just even better that year. That's just how it is. Auditions and job interview are the same, and arguably the stakes are higher. You can be a near perfect fit for some position, but if you happen to end up competing against on of the few people who may be a better fit, you lose. I think you do have a point here, but it's not that movies aren't "supposed" to be competitive. It's that the movies aren't (in general) made in a competitive framework. This is important because competitive version of art do vary from noncompetitive versions. Competition material is meant to be impressive, so people making the art will make the thing that is most impressive, and if they know how the judges are rating them, they will cater towards that rating system. The Oscars (and similar awards) are a competition between works of art made for different purposes -- some competitive, some artistic, some commercial -- which is clearly an unfair sport.

Last year, out of the movies that were nominated, I saw Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures and La La Land. And I agree, I have no idea how you could declare any of them to be the "best picture." I would personally say Hacksaw because the movie actually left an impact on my life, but if you were to say either of the other two were the best, i wouldn't be able to argue. Really, the whole thing is so subjective, it's not fair to declare a winner.

great vid as always, but I have a couple of things to mention. first, when talking about DiCaprio, you are making it sound like he would have won in another year, which is very hypothetical. secondly, many people complain that they never nominate Blockbusters. The thing is that many Blockbusters play it very safe and don't take risks when it comes to filmmaking, often making them cinematically (cinematography, editing etc.)quite uninteresting even if they are entertaining. Thirdly, I agree on the bias thing, although you kinda glossed over the massive amount of lobbying one has to do to get nominated. The Academy don't watch all Films, so the Films need to be brought to their attention one way or the other, leaving smaller and underperforming Films (e.g. the nice Guys) in the cold. lastly, I believe that one of the main reasons for the Oscars is Marketing. winning, or even being nominated boosts the publicity, which is why all that lobbying is even worth it. this, plus all the things you mentioned is a reason why many people, especially KZbin critics don't care much about the oscars
@sierrafirerider6 жыл бұрын
You also forgot a thing. They have so many genres for movies yet there's only one for animation. It's a medium, not a genre. They also choose a lot of Disney movies versus movies that are from lesser-known companies. But yeah, I think they should replace the Academy Awards with a large enough film festival that spans at least a month if they want to recognize good movies. Also, the Academy Awards is a sham, just like you said, but for a different reason. Bigger companies can buy their awards from the judges if they wanted to. It's like betting on a horse that is pumped with steroids. They don't leave any chance that other well-done movies actually win, even if the bribed movie sucks.

Awards like these aren't supposed to be competitions, or certifications of goodness so I disagree with most of your points. They are meant to be endorsements of your work from your peers. Many industries with professional associations hold events like this. We know many in the industry treat it as a contest and produce Oscar-bait movies that have a high chance of winning an Oscar but this is not the spirit of the ceremony. But I like the idea of giving awards to nominees rather than picking a winner from a group of nominees.

The best way to celebrate a film is to make it in to the National Film Registry or your nation's equivalent. Being recognized as a significant historical entertainment achievement of a particular country that should be preserved for as long as possible, is far more honoring than a random golden statue for being the best in a single year.

It would be interesting to have an award that would be given to movies made at least 20 years before, preferably separately for various categories of films and that could have zero winners or more than one winner in each category for movies that are remembered and/or influenced the culture and the film industry.

You are completely right though, this is art and no matter how, broadly speaking, one film might be more popular than another, really it's all very subjective and all of this rather takes away from the purpose of art. To show just how silly the whole thing is they ought to just base the triumph on how much each film grossed, it would certainly show just how cynical the whole thing is, but would at least add a little more substance to the _competition_ !

I don't really know anything about the Oscars, but everything you described ... isn't that how the nominations should work? If several films come out in the same year and are all amazing, wouldn't they all get nominated? And if only a few great films come out, wouldn't only a few get nominated?

Perhaps, in a perfect world, the Oscars are just an annual event in which a bunch of people talk about which movies they thought were generally the best that year. No concrete statement that this movie is *the best*. Just, these should all be considered cinematic achievements.

You are so right! Seeing as Hollywood is so social justicy now, Stop giving out Oscars to the winners and just give out Oxen to everyone.You know, equal out comes for all. Participation Awards.

Hmmm I have two things. First there are many competitions with subjective measurements of winning, say horse riding. still I can appreciate the competitive element, which has everyone striving for a better performance. Also it is simply fun to be in a competition. Second of all, a winner is always with respect to a competitor. This doesn't mean that the competition is wrong, but only that people should view the award with the competitors in mind. Thirdly you suggest there is a better way, but I wouldn't know of a pragmatic alternative to the competition. This left me quite curious. Personally I'm fine with no alternative at all as I only really care about how much I could appreciate the movie myself. PS: I don't think you'll read this as the video is quite old, but if you do, I really appreciate your videos so thanks!

Seeing the Miss Universe image made me think of a possible subject. Many people argue that pageant degrade women yet others say they empower woman. What would you say?

#unexpectedcena Oh yeah, and the rest of the video was really great and gave me new perspective, per usual. Keep up the good work, man.

This is why I liked NerdCubed's old award system. 1) pick a game/movie/whatever that deserves an award. 2) come up with a way to phrase it as "best ___" afterward. Everything good gets an award, and nothing gets one for being less mediocre than its competition.

Why don't they give Oscars to a group of winners? Like every time I look at the list for best picture or best actor, I can go down the line and say, "yeah, I could see them all winning". That's because, depending on how I feel that day, I might resonate with any of them over the others. If that's the case, then they all succeeded. Great example; La La Land vs Moonlight. You even said in the video, that everyone clapped and the music played. That's because it was just as believable that La La Land could've won. I would consider it just as "great" of a film (whatever that means). I think that definitely shows how meaningless it actually is. Different films have different audiences, and aren't all trying to achieve the same goal. Just imagine if the winner were the entire group of nominees; I just think that would be a lot more accurate.

All competitive pursuits suffer from a timing issue. Some years in sports are populated with teams so good they could each individually beat all the teams in other years. Thus, due to bad timing, some teams will never win the top competitions and will never get the recognition skill alone would warrant. This is also true in business, true even at university, true in life in general. There is no simple solution to this.

Matt Pat on the Film theory channel did a good vid about the formula for winning an Oscar which speaks to how he talked about there being a panel of actors in the academy here. Go check that out, yo!
