Having explosions in space is different from a fire in space. If a spaceship explodes, there is gas and oxygen (fuels and propellants) that are released, and they will burn (otherwise, how would rockets work at all?). However, the explosion would more quickly be snuffed out by the vacuum of space, as gases are going to disperse very quickly, so it would look different than an explosion in the atmosphere. Also, you could also have a fire in space on the hull of a ship if the fire is being fed by venting gases. Again, it would look different (more like a blowtorch) from a typical campfire, with flames being affected by air currents, which is what the fire in 'The Acolyte' looks like. That is a problem, and it is distracting.

Also, I want to note that sounds in space are a design choice for the medium to enhance the watching experience. The fire in space adds nothing and is quickly glossed over. It was a lazy way to have fire. Even though you could have had fire inside the ship, it would change little to the story. Lazy writing is lazy.

Lol everyone is calling it a campfire in space. And THAT was my first thought, too. I'm like "it looks like someone burning logs." So many people agree. It could have been solved if the fire was more violent or a different color. They get a leak there's this stream of fire jetting out of the hull. Blah blah blah. Seal the leak. Fire calms down and goes away. But a camp fire? Nah... that was too lazy

i think you're wrong about the whole "sound in space" thing. lots of people get that completely wrong. when you're watching a space battle and you hear sound, it's not the sound heard from the position of the camera, it's the sound heard by the people inside the spaceships. just like when you're watching a car scene and you hear the people inside the cars talking, even when the camera is far away from the cars. or when you're watching TOP GUN and you can hear the pilots talking to each other even when you're seeing the planes from the outside. that doesn't mean you could actually hear them talking from that camera position. it's simply a tool used by filmmakers. and it doesn't mean there's sound in space. you're simply hearing what the characters are hearing. and not even necessarily the characters, it also works when there are no characters there to hear it. imagine the microphone recording the sound is just inside the hull of the spaceships.

The "sound" in space is for the audience, like background music heightening the emotional response of a scene (and so it doesn't feel like you accidentally sat on your remote and pressed the mute button). I would be OK with there being no sound in the space scenes, but I would guess that most of the audience would not. Either way, it isn't even close to the same as a literal fire (not explosion) breaking out in space.

@jmgonzalez4
@jmgonzalez4 15 күн бұрын
@ZmbieTaco yes, and that's how I personally imagine scenes playing out on screen/film. Ultimately, the goal of a movie is to manage the emotions of the viewer, and the only two senses/levers you have (as a screenwriter) to do that is with sight and sound. So even if a concussive reverberation (muffled audio) is not scientifically "sound" it does make things clear for the audience, i.e., gives us a proper cue. But if you can get away without the muffled sound in the edit, I think you HAVE to go without.

I think the fire feels so ridiculous to some people because it's a sustained, calm fire that doesn't need Oxygen in the exact same shot as people wearing space suits because they DO need Oxygen. Removing sound and explosions from space would make action scense much more boring, but there were a bunch of other things they could have gone with besides a space campfire to accomplish what they needed.

The sound in space thing is to support the visuals goin on in the medium. We know there’s no sound in space, but having the sound of tie fighters shows how intimidating they are supposed to be. The sound of hyperspace shows how powerful the ships coming out of them are. Can’t imagine playing the entire space battle of RotJ with no sound at all. Some level of disbelief is fine for the audience

I respect your effort to approach this review totally divorced of any political messaging or agenda. What kills me is that even if you come into watching this show with that kind of mindset and take everything at face value everything feels so incredibly half-assed! The dialogue is painful, the flow of the scenes either feel really off, or are too perfect and remove all sense of time and distance (how long was Osha on that ice planet!) between the moments or worlds, and it just comes off like there's not a lot of effort being put into some of the details. The writers, or the Characters doing dumb crap that any outside observer would call out is probably what really pisses me off! Like: 1) Character wise; I understand Yord is meant to be the "by-the-book and thus unable to adapt" example of a "High Republic" Jedi. So; are we meant to believe that Jedi of the era would waste the time and resources of sending a team out to detain a suspect, even bringing along a witness; but instead of bringing the suspect back with them, they send her in a prisoner transport. Then when the transport crashes, they send someone out to procure the escape pods; but instead of going after the crashed ship to investigate immediately, you go all the way back to Corusant so you can turn around and go all the way back?! Why?! Like I said; I get Yord being inflexible; but why would the method he used be standard protocol for the Jedi?! None of it makes logical or logistical sense! It's not even taking into account that they think Osha was capable of downing a MASTER and her only guard is a SINGLE droid!? 2) On the writer front; I get that the fire was meant to be a trigger for Osha; if that's the case, why not make the fire start in her room or the corridor outside it? If I remember right; Nemoidians cut costs wherever they can, and we see how little value they see mechanic lives, I could see them putting no effort into any kind of fire-suppression in their residential area of the ship. No "fire in space" queries from folks, and the fire being in or near her room could make for a more traumatic flashback as it happens in or near her home! My feelings about this episode, if not this show in general can be summed up in the immortal words of a brainwashed Frog and T-Rex from an underrated Disney movie: "I'm just not sure how well this plan was thought through."

I already wrote something similar somewhere else, but anyway, in a nutshell. Spoiler she is told not to use weapons. Ok, so in my mind, she should have been trailing the jedi. Getting her somewhere alone. This shows that she is a tracker and an assassin. Simple. They can still fight. But only using their space kung fu. This is because she is CLEARLY TOLD not to use weapons. They fight for a bit. She runs away. The jedi follows her. The jedi falls into a trap. Could he a locked room or whatever. They fight once more time. And then the chick jumps out of a widow or whatever, holding a detonator and blowing up the room or building. Showing everyone that this was all PLANNED. Anyway, first, it shows she is sticking to the no-weapons rule. Second, it shows that she has experience hunting jedi. Three. It shows she plans ahead. Four. It uses the jedi senses against them. They sense danger, BUT by attacking the jedi for the finale time, the jedi will think the danger is coming from HER and not the room itself. She loses the fight on purpose and blows everything up. This shows that she is WILLING to do ANYTHING to achieve her goals and reach her target. Anyway, it's all really stupid. But the fight itself, on its own, was fine. But that's just in isolation to everything else before and after the fight when you think about it for more than like 5 seconds. Also, they are NOT using weapons it shows someone else is pulling her strings. And it could be that this dumb rule was ACTUALLY part of her training. Maybe this is step three or something. Now that you have killed 8 jedi. Or whatever You must hunt the next 2 without weapons. That way it can be explained as a training exercise. FORCING her to use her head to out-wit the jedi and killing them through indirect means and other things. But... that would take too much effort... soooo.... yeah... not gonna happen.

"Get over yourselves"?! I understand trying to give the show credit, but "It's not Star Wars" is because it's a fight seen that makes no sense. The writing issues withing the show are very much present there. The reasoning for the choice of fighting is lazy and illogical. And the execution makes it into a a mere flash of style at the expense of logic. The fight *IS* a story detail. Cool is cool, but considering she's attempting to be an assassin, she should be trying some sort of assassination instead of a duel. Particularly since she's being shown as not cut out for the duelling at all.

I will actually defend the Jedi thinking it was OSHA who did it. One imagine the list of trained force users who are not a part of the Jedi Order is not a very long list. Combined with her having no alibi, and being identified by an eye witness that would certainly be enough to arrest someone in the modern world. Basically they do not have a king list of suspects to go through, and her matching the description in look and being positively identified is pretty solid.

An explosion of a ship that has oxygen and other flammable gas could very well cause a QUICK fiery explosion... Adding sound effects in space combat just simply adds to the experience for the viewer, also the vibration within the ships that would cause sound is actually still there... The fire in the acolyte scene on the other hand acts exactly like fire on a planet does. Fire flows "up" because it is lighter than air. Fire waves and flickers because of wind... Even if there is flammable gas blowing out of the hull, it wouldn't flicker or wave. It would be a circular orb of energy. The writers were trying to push a story beat that was out of place. She had to get flash backs of fire on a planet, But she was in space, so the writers forced it made planet side flames in space even if it didn't make sense. Similar to the "WW2" bombing run from the last Jedi. The writers want to push their ideal story moment even if it doesn't make sense In the context of the overall situation.

@NefariousKoel 23 күн бұрын
Yeah, that could've been done better. As with so many things. If it was venting flammable gas, then it would've looked more like a blow torch. If it was just an explosion that started it, the fire would've expanded in a circle and quickly ended when there wasn't enough left to continue burning. Instead, it just looked like a slow burning campfire. Which was the issue. Not like the budget was so small it was the only answer.

I think the issue with fire is space is that it was unnecessary and generally when you do things like sound or explosions in space in the middle of a great action scene its breaking the rules to enhance the action. In this case it just a boring scene with an added immersion breaking fire that allows you to think about how it doesn't make any sense. When Im watching the deathstar trench run I'm not thinking about what doesn't make sense. You can really only break these rules if you are a competent filmmaker.

Yes if you listen that’s one of my points as well - I talked about it being pretty blatant but also it’s not going to make or break a story for me because it’s such a funny thing to get mad at in world where physics don’t even make sense in the first place

@@Stark-Cinema I agree, didnt mean to argue with your point more so I think I just get why people get upset about something innocuous if the thing you're watching isn't distracting you from it by being so good you couldnt bother to care. I hate it when some critics(cough*efap*cough) just go off on hours long breakdowns of shows and movies getting all tangled up in minute details as if that speaks to the quality of the piece,while others dismiss all criticism because"its a story about space wizards for children." I just want to have a good time. I used to love star wars, but disney has made it so dull and lacking in substance or character. Andor actually felt like star wars to me though so I'm disappointed things keep trending downward. By the way love your vibe, voice, and editing brother. looking forward to more content.

There has to be slammable gasses involved in a space ship. Flickering flames like a campfire is a step (or 2) too far, but space breeze could be a thing. 🤷🏿‍♂️ In Star Wars. Regarding fire, explosions, & sound in space. I've always assumed that the physics of the Star Wars universe differ from ours due to the force. Perhaps this difference in physics is what makes light sabers possible in this universe. In my opinion if one is going to nitpic about fire in space they must also nitpic the physics of light sabers.... among other things.

Sound in space is complicated in terms of movie magic. If we were really floating out there, we wouldn't hear the sound. But we aren't floating out there. It's the whole "If a tree falls in a forest but no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?" Thing, in a sense. We are not in conditions to observe the sound. It's not a great comparison for obvious reasons, but I reserve the right to be lazy. Fire in space can be explained more easily that just a viewer thing ghough. There has to be slammable gasses involved in a space ship. Flickering flames like a campfire is a step (or 2) too far, but space breeze could be a thing. 🤷🏿‍♂️ In Star Wars. Though if space breeze can be a thing, maybe people out in the "vacuum" of space can hear everything going on around them? It definitely doesn't "piss me off". Not inherently. It's a lazy way to trigger a flashback, though. They did this for a flashback trigger. But with the money they allegedly spent on the show, a minor explosion could have triggered memory of something exploding in that fire instead of a standard fire we'd see in breathable atmosphere outdoors. It's just something that takes a bit more effort.

For a pretty small channel, I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with the review. I genuinely think it's better than most of the more popular channels that make content about these shows. You pointed out both the good and bad, and you don't seem like just an "anti woke" grifter like some of these other reviewers. My only criticism is that I don't think you should apologize so much when you point out aspects of the show that might be construed as political. Be strong in your conviction because it's just your opinion at the end of the day, but I get not wanting to be associated in any way with that whole culture war dumpster fire.

The sound in space argument does not hold because it is essentially just an established movie cliche purely for the audience's auditory enjoyment. It is also a valid point to make that the sound does not exist in-universe, it is just added for the viewer. Same goes for explosions in space. The average watcher does not have a concept in their mind about how manmade objects break down in space, so it is an enhancement + applies the rule of cool. But we have to draw the line somewhere or soon there will be breathable oxygen in space, and to me that line is anything that does not enhance the audio-visual experience, like a fire in space, which can be easily replaced

You said character growth when talking about her gaining force powers in the future. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt... But just to make myself clear. Becoming powerful isn't character growth
@Stark-Cinema
@Stark-Cinema 21 күн бұрын
It is indeed a form of character growth. If a character has a goal to grow in power, and it helps the character become something greater, that is easily considered growth. You must have a different definition. It’s not the only type of growth, but it is growth nonetheless. It’s definitely not regression, and it’s definitely not neutral. The only option left is to define it as growth. If it negatively affects her, we can talk about that.

@@Stark-Cinema A character growing in power can be a catalyst for character growth. But simply gaining power isn't character growth unless they have to work, train, sweat and bleed for that power. Say I'm a character. I'm walking down the road and I find a nuclear weapon or a super OP sword with magical BS powers. Did I just experience character growth? The character is the same, they just have the tool exert more influence on their surroundings. It doesn't change a character but it can lead to a change in character.
@lazytyrant9010

I think we might be missing eachother because I'm assuming MC is going to just magically become powerful out of nowhere for no particular reason. Which is unnatural. Power growth used to be tied to character growth but now Disney Star Wars just throws power to those who need it when they need it and call it character growth.
@Stark-Cinema
@Stark-Cinema 21 күн бұрын
@@lazytyrant9010 No I don't mean it like that. Picking up a new weapon isn't growth. In this case I mean a character EARNING that power. The BECOMING part is literally the growth. You're describing a dumb scenario where a character arbitrarily get's powers. I wasn't really referring to that.
