It's too big of a franchise for them to let go. They would have to be in deep financial straits before they would even begin to consider selling the IP. I think they are hoping gen Alpha will begin to buy into the franchise while those of us who grew up with George Lucas star wars get older and they are just buying for time but the problem for them is that Gen Alpha doesn't care or too few in number invested into the franchise.

Disney has never sold a major IP once they have it. They have rarely even let a license lapse. That's why creators and IP holders should never accept the bag from Disney. If they burn your IP, they will never admit they failed and give it up for someone else to do a better job. Great example is Alita Battle Angel. The movie did well despite the limited release and marketing budget. But Disney doesn't like manga and anime. So despite James Cameron wanted to do more with the IP, Disney has put the breaks on anything moving forward.

I got really excited for Star Wars when The Mandalorian (S1-S2) came out. I thought Jon Favreau did a fantastic job with it. Granted it had its issues, but for the most part it felt like the Star Wars we all know and love. Nobody else at Lucasfilm under Disney has even come close in my view, not even Dave.
