One of the best things about the Addams Family movies is that the antagonists would actually get along with the Addamses and be willing to help them with whatever financial problems they had if they had just the least bit of chill. The lawyer? He was friends with them for ages but he wanted to rip them off. A psychopath con artist? Surprised she's not a distant cousin. And Deb at the end when she's explaining all of her trauma, they completely understand and sympathize . All she had to do was chill and she would've been welcomed with open arms. She even could've kept trying to murder Fester as stress relief (dude puts arsenic on his Cheerios so good luck). But no, she had to choose...pastels.

That part at 15:33 that you said didn't age well was the exact intention at the time; every single "main" cast member chosen for the performance was a slim white blonde girl. All the kids chosen for the Native American roles were PoC, fat, nerdy or disabled. It's a commentary on what is considered "cosmetically pleasing" to white middle class Americans and how passive-aggressive they can be to kids who don't conform. @@waterclosetgetit1986that doesn't make sense. Satirizing something, and not satirizing something, are different things. As someone who watched Addams Family Values in the theaters when it came out, I need to say that the scene where Gary and Becky cast the play was supposed to come off as racist - so it aged perfectly. The scream at the poster of Michael Jackson was another pop culture reference - around the time the movie was being made/released, allegations had come out that Michael had SA'd a young boy.
@SuperDrocket Жыл бұрын
I would disagree with you about your interpretation of the Michael Jackson poster. The first public accusations against MJ came out in August 1993, and the movie was released in November 1993 - given how long it takes to make movies, there's absolutely no way the timing of that works out. The poster beside the one of MJ himself is Heal the World, released in 1991 (which would fit the timing of when the movie was being made.) If you listen to the song/watch the video, it's an extremely schlocky 'love will fix the world' song, which fits in with the rest of the cutesy 'hang in there' cat poster type stuff the cabin is decorated with. Really, just go listen to the Heal the World song and you'll quickly see why such saccharin nonsense would be horrifying to Adams-type personalities.

Funny thing about the Addams' is they like the villains because well, they're villains. It's only when they start messing with the family that they gotta go.

Fun fact: Pubert was supposed to be Gomez's name, as penned by the creator once the original series was in production and they needed to expand on the characters from the comic strips, but the name was rejected and the creator settled on Gomez. Its not a huge deal, but its really nice that the writers snuck that little reference in there

Fun fact: the police officer Gomez is ranting at is Nathan Lane! He's best known to modern audiences as the voice of Timon in _The Lion King_ opposite Ernie Sebella as Pumba, and also played Max Bialystock in the Broadway adaptation of _The Producers_ while starring opposite _Lion King_ and _Ferris Bueller's Day Off_ star Matthew Broderick as Leo Bloom. But what is the coolest fact is that Nathan Lane would eventually play Gomez himself when _The Addams Family_ became a Broadway musical

Camp counselor was played by Christine Baranski, who is fabulous in absolutely everything she does...theatre, film, and tv. Ashleigh, you saw her in The Birdcage...Val's birth mother. Was also Leonard's mom in Big Bang Theory, if you ever watched that.

I enjoy your reactions so much! You always get all the jokes (this is important since I older and the jokes are missed by other reactors) and you always buy into the whole plot. If Fluffy has to swim the English Channel to save the day, you are right there cheering Fluffy on. You never say, "That was stupid". You make watching the reactions fun! :) (The second song in the cabin was "Tomorrow", the theme song from "Annie" (Little Orphan Annie), a totally feel-good kid's movie). Amy Fisher (in the trading cards) shot her lover's wife in the head, but the wife survived. It was very scandalous and juicy, and all over the tabloids. Amy was nicknamed "The Long Island Lolita". After getting out of jail, she became a porn star. And you need to see The Sound of Music. It is a classic and based on a true story, and starring Julie Andrews.

I suspect that you would really enjoy Grosse Point Blank - it stars John Cusack and Minnie Driver, but has a brilliant minor role performed by his sister, Joan Cusack ( who was great as Debbie in Addams Family Values ), as well as cameos by several other members of their family, including his mother - also a lunatic turn by Dan Akroyd.

I remember when I was younger I would hear her name here and there but I had no idea who she was or what she did. I finally looked her up. What a crazy story. But that shooting happened like 30 years ago and it's not really talked about a lot now so I'm not really shocked she doesn't know about it.

They are amazing together as a Lawyer defending another Lawyer. 2.)"Tequila Sunrise"(1988) Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer, Raul Julia! I love this movie so much, even just the camp part is worth the whole movie. But someone mentioned, and I can't get it out of my head, why are they doing a Thanksgiving play at summer camp? "Wow, she is just surrounded by seamen." Sure would be a shame if someone took that out of context.
@tracy4290 Жыл бұрын
My take on "why are they doing a Thanksgiving play at summer camp?" is that it is a TERRIBLE play, so the only place that they CAN do it is at a summer camp (with captive actors AND audience) that Gary partially owns.

They did a Thanksgiving play at summer camp, because what's more white privilege and racist than portraying inaccurate representations of colonization

Well after your reaction to "The Fugitive" earlier this week, a lot of people suggsted that you watch "Men in Black" (starring Tommy Lee Jones, who of course is also in The Fugitive), and I agree, you should! That being said, Men in Black (and its 2 sequels) is acutally directed by the same guy who directed The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values. His name is Barry Sonnefeld. Get Shorty is another movie he directed that I think you'd enjoy!

I would add "U.S. Marschals" to that list of "sequels", as I think this came out after "The Fugitive". Men in Black 1 & 2 definately, the 3 wasn't bad, and as someone pointed out, there was something that came out after, but I can't remember it.

I think that the reason the movies focus on Fester is that everyone else in the family have fairly defined roles from the original comics and TV series. The comics were single panels/single jokes and while they are good would not translate to a full movie. You should watch the TV series as it does capture a lot of the humor from the comics and fleshes out the characters quite well.

Great reaction Ashleigh. One of the best Thanksgiving movies ever made. This is my favorite Joan Cusack role. She really hammed it up. It was perfect. And Christina Ricci's first kiss was just too adorable. This now gives you 2 TV shows to check out. The Addams Family from the 1960s, (which has my favorite Morticia and Gomez), and Wednesday, with the perfectly cast Jenna Ortega. You will love both. A change of pace recommendation for the new year, starring one of your future ex husbands is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Without spoiling it for you, it has two conmen competing with each other, and it's lots of fun.

Oh, I am SO excited for this: an amazing sequel and we get to watch Ashleigh's hair dry!!! Christina Ricci's Wednesday is really next-level top tier, and Joan Cusack's Debbie really should have fit into the family had she just embraced them for who they were. But this sequel is just... outstanding! And the fact Wednesday's Thanksgiving speech is STILL relevant in 2023 is... unthinkable! And the whole "They had sex" is brilliant. This is just... an outstanding film that if you you did not watch the first film you could still follow it without confusion!!

Even though the movie takes place during the Summer, it was released during Thanksgiving week on 1993, and there is a play about the First Thanksgiving within the movie.
