The Administrator's Impact on TF2 as an Announcer

To everyone asking why I didn't mention the Halo announcer in this, it's for the same reason I gave as to why I used OW as a an example. I'm simply not that familiar with the series, so I didn't know the announcer in Halo could even be comparable. To anyone that thinks it's blasphemous that I'm not familiar with the Halo series, I didn't grow up with Microsoft consoles, so I didn't grow with an interest in the series. The most I ever played was Combat Evolved my junior year of high school on school computers.

Another thing the administrator does right is the fact that the unique filter and plethora of different lines makes it so you can tell her apart from people talking in voice chat, and so it's more difficult to "fake announcement" with a soundboard

Again with my "back in my day" nonsense. TFC used the same weird robotic announcer voice that you'd hear in Half-Life. The one that seemed to be putting sentences together from pre-recorded words or short phrases. (YOU) (have) (Captured) (the) (ENEMY FLAG). That automated robot announcer voice had a minor story beat in Half-Life: at some point the HECU grunts gain control of it, which is almost like the enemy hoisting a flag over your keep. They control the facility now. Otherwise it occasionally says things like "access denied" to the player. I think there was an easter egg where it starts getting snippy if you try to go through a locked door multiple times, saying things like "no means no." It definitely didn't have the personality that The Administrator has in TF2, but it worked.

If this is just a debate about realism then she probably speaks through different loudspeakers on the map, depending on where the teams are located. So if you're near red's base you hear the red's announcements. Of course this would also mean a spy sneaking around red's base would hear red's announcer, but hey its just a game.

I know she didn’t grow up with Halo, so she can’t really compare it to TF2, but the Halo announcer was the pinnacle of what a shooter could have, like pretty much everything else Halo did. He wasn’t nearly as funny, but his voice being so badass when something dumb happened only led to it being funnier, and when something actually badass happened it heightened the moment

Announcers are one of those things that, if they aren't there, it doesn't matter too much, but if something adds it it's almost always memorable. As someone who plays many COOP games people like Glados from Portam, Bain/Locke from Payday and the Trader from Killing Floor just stay with you. Be it the enjoyment of the fight by the Administrator, the snarky remarks/insults of Glados, the half-hearted compliments or "oh really, I didn't know that" advise by the Trader, a suprising level of care for criminal mass murders by Bain or a just a funny dialect/speech patterns from Locke. Announcers really elevate a game, if done right.... hell even the good old "M-m-m-m-monsterkill-kill-kill-kill" and "DOMINATED" that get way too overused on shitty community servers are sometimes enjoyable....

I looked at your document regarding Athena. As an OW player who also likes looking up videos of tf2, I agree with your points. Even though, Athena makes sense for the lore, She's just not the kind of voice that fits for an fps announcer. Too many important callouts by Athena are usually hard to hear due to her monotone voice or not said, like the last 10 seconds countdown. (and some of them are actually called out by your hero or your teammates such as when time is running out, or a point is in the process of being captured, but they shouldn't have to be the ones who relay the information.) I also think that announcers for games need some kind of personality, whether the administrators somewhat threatening tone of voice or the epic voice of Halo's. One other game that has a poor announcer personalty is VEGA from DOOM 2016's multiplayer. He does his job of telling important info, like kills needed to win and calls out when powerups, power weapons, and demon runes are about to drop, when they drop, and whether your team, or the enemy claimed it, and when the demon rune's power has ended. His main problem is his that VEGA is just a male Athena, an emotionless AI, and DOOM is just a pure adrenaline rush and and VEGA, who helps you in the campaign, doesn't fit as an announcer for it's non-canon multiplayer.

Can we talk about skymins choice in music for the background of the video? It always works so well and makes the video so much more impactful. Bayonettas gates of hell theme when talking about the announcer just gave so much more kick to the video. That and hat in times rift theme when discussing the announcer for overwatch. 10/10

The comics probably contradict this, at least in part, but I have a theory that at some point the Administrator got fed up with saying all her lines manually and implemented a soundboard, which would explain why you occasionally hear identical voicelines one after the other. Would also explain how she's able to give two completely different voicelines at the same time for the same objective, or how she can keep up when people constantly swapping the intelligence. It could even explain why Watergate has a stock text-to-speech voice in place of the Administrator when players interact with the beam (from a lore standpoint, not technical/behind-the-scenes). She probably didn't have time to record lines due to the suddenness of the alien invasion.

According to the comics, Helen says personally all of the fight statements by first speaking to BLU and afterwards to RED and vice versa. Not to mention that she only has 1 hour off a year. However, the comics skip some other things like explaining how can there be 2 of each mercenary for both RED and BLU, or pretty much BLU mercs existence in the first place. So you may not want to think that hard in how she can keep the pace with stuff like Intelligence drop spamming and such.

Speaking of great announcers, I really love the announcer for Unreal Tournament (1999). His voice is sharp and with the filter he cuts through the carnage. Another set of announcers is the Company of Heroes 2 announcers, I remember the allies especially. The Soviet is cold but gets into it as you go further in the game, the American is as passionate as all Americans are for football, and the British is quite disconnected.
