We speak with Washington Post investigative reporter Craig Whitlock, author of the new book “The Afghanistan Papers: A Secret History of the War,” which reveals how multiple U.S. presidents deceived the public about progress in the war despite widespread skepticism among defense and diplomatic officials about the mission. “The public narrative was that the U.S. was always making progress. All these presidents said we were going to win the war, and yet, in private, these officials were extremely pessimistic,” says Whitlock. He also discusses miscalculations in the initial invasion of Afghanistan, the collapse of the Afghan security forces and how U.S. defense contractors have benefited from the last two decades of war.

Why the sudden outrage? Returned US troops have years shared about their misgivings about being ordered every night to raid afghan houses of suspected militants. Often the occupants were not as alleged but they suffered their homes been broken into, tied, humiliated, arrested...no wonder the civilians that hated Americans grew over time.

The Northern Alliance is composed of the very rapist murderous warlords who destabilized the country with their reign of terror, kidnap, rape, murder, terrorial fights and extortion (women married or unmarried were kidnapped from their houses and raped, wife's breasts cut off in front of her husband to humiliate his honor, men murdered in front of their families, etc). It was the rise of the Taliban (after the rape case of a young girl) that put a stop to this, brought security and peace and ensured the protection of women. This is such a nightmare!! I will have to read "The Afghanistan Papers" to help understand. This just seems like another withdrawal from Saigon. Why don' t top officers learn anything in their military education?? Something (truth) is missing. Hopefully, in years to come, what has really happened will be made clear. In the meantime, as usual, innocent people suffer. I can't help think that behind the scenes, deals are being made, and money is being exchanged.

In her amazing book "Surprise, Kill, Vanish: The Secret History of CIA Paramilitary Armies, Operators, and Assassins", author and journalist Annie Jacobsen revealed that former Afghan President Hamid Karzai's half-brother Ahmed Wali Karzai, was given the position of Chairman of the Kandahar Provincial Council, a posting he held from 2005 to his assassination on July 12, 2011. During that time, allegations of corruption, thuggery, and abuses of power were made by many individuals against the Chairman.

DN proves that it is still capable of excellent coverage with stories like this. When all the facts fall into line with their narrative and no spin is necessary, they can be so good. What is somewhat amusing is the number of luminaries of one strip or another who claim to have known the outcome of the military action in Afghanistan ten years ago. I would be willing to bet that half the people reading this comment could truthfully say they knew the inevitable outcome twenty years ago.
