Thing with preordering is that back in the day of physical only copies, it was necessary to make sure you got the game. I still remember preordering halo 3 and watching all the people who didn't walk away from the most overcrowded gamestop you've ever seen empty handed. Now these games are almost always downloaded and the culture has just carried over.

*I remember pre-ording GTA4 and going to game stop at midnight & it was thousands of people there, or at least it felt like it, was probably more like 200 people but still a insane amount for such a small store. The parking lot was like a block party, blunts being passed, drinks being drunk... I remember hitting someone's blunt getting stoned as fuck & when I finally got to the counter they couldn't find my preorder and I almost had a heart attack but it was just a wrong phone number 😂😂*

And yet, now reddit gamers also expect games to come out and be supported long after launch instead of just whatever is in the game at launch for free. If it doesn’t get enough ‘content’ after launch then it’s a dead game.

I was 13 years old when I learned the term “downloadable content.” It was when halo 2 released their first map pack. You paid a nominal fee (like $10) if you wanted three new maps. You could also wait a set amount of time, like 2 weeks or something short, and get the DLC for free. DLC nowadays is everything that should’ve shipped with the game at launch.

Pre ordering in that era you are talking about also had more a more practical purpose as well, being you couldn’t just download a game the second it comes out. Now, not only do you only get the BS skins you mentioned, but you don’t even need to preorder a physical copy anyway, as most of the time the disk is just a physical placeholder for a license anyway.

I gotta agree with that last statement. I have so many games to play that I don't know how I'm gonna finish them all. Gottta broaden your taste or you'll just be stuck in this cycle. So that's what I did. I got RPGS, CRPS, Grand Strategy, Rogue-lites, Metroidvanias, Movement indie FPS's, VNs, Coloney Sims, and even more genres and games on my xbox. It’s why I will *never* shun, berate, or play the moral high ground card when anyone pirates a triple A title (not indies) upon its release once they crack the anti-cheat because of the ridiculous prices they charge for their broken messes. Majority of people I know that have gotten the game through other means will play it, see if they enjoy it, and if it lives up to their expectations? They’ll go buy it. If it’s garbage, they just uninstall it and never worry about crappy refund policies. Given the current state of the industry where people receive these broken games and still sing praises of it, torrents don’t affect the triple A companies like people try to claim. I always see people try to argue “but the devs, the devs need to be paid!!” These companies still make millions even with a borked game, sadly, so even if every person that got the game through other means bought it, devs would still get the same pay they’ve always gotten. Nothing changes there, sailing the seas or not. All that changes is the triple A companies will just get even richer, continuing to think this is all okay. The only thing I don’t like seeing people obtain are indie games, and for the most part, many in the pirating communities will buy those games just like how they buy a triple A title if they end up liking it. It’s what I’ve done for games I enjoyed.

Agreed, I almost exclusively play Japanese developed games these days and never have these issues on console. I will say Japanese PC ports have been known to have issues, recent examples being Wild Hearts and Wo Long. But in both cases the devs have worked hard after release to patch as many bugs in the PC port as possible.
@wikidpsycokilla

The price hike being done at the same time as a new console generation and paired with the fact that we never saw a price drop to reflect the reduced cost from the move to digital distribution(no more manufacture, distribution, or brick and mortar cut of sales) really makes pc players feel like we are getting fleeced, being forced to fund the console infrastructure from the outside. Its pretty likely the extra ten dollars is just to offset the enormous loss the new consoles are sold at, considering they get a cut of the sales.

I used to be one of those gullible, loyal-to-the-end customers for several different franchises and developers. But every single one burned me so many times that I finally learned my lesson about trusting anybody to make a good game. I've been a huge fan of Pokemon for 25 damn years but I still decided to skip Scarlet/Violet, and in general I've finally stuck to my guns about not preordering after years of saying "well, except for this game" and getting burned again and again.

Have to add in, yeah from the future on an old video... Games before the DLC and downloadable updates, had to ship out at a certain level. They had to have QA, had to ship out a good game. And that is why there were varying levels of bugs in older games. Some with less, some with more. Also comes along the other leg to this. as explained in the video, one dev, one man in his sticks location can program a functional game... Yet these companies of 100+ can't dedicate a team to stress and bug testing? It is also cause of this that people are starting to get irritated... And live service games only add onto this. You get live service game (basically a second job) and the only thing that works on release is the cash shop. So... its like saying, its a cash shop, with a game tacked on.

33:50 as a GQA I can say that this is so true lol. I've had people come to me and be like "yeah I played your game, it has a lot of bugs" and I just answer "look, all those bugs you have are already reported, devs will just come out and say not planning on fixing this" (which is also not their fault, they probably have very strict guidelines from above on what to focus their efforts on as well) and thats the end of the story, you learn to live with those bugs around you until the project ends.

@Lucifronz

Yeah, I don't really rely on reviews to *tell* me what's good or bad about a game. I just look at gameplay footage, get an idea of the state of the port from a tech-based KZbinr or user reviews, and if enough people are shitting on the quality I'll wait it out. If I'm interested in the game at all, that is. There is rarely a game I see that I'm interested or not interested in that turns out to be better/worse than I expected. I seem to have my sense for what games I'll like tuned perfectly at this point in my life. The one exception I can even think of recently was Kenshi, but to be fair, I didn't look too deeply into that game when I first saw it. I eventually watched a video on it that was randomly recommended and thought "okay, there's a ton of depth to this in ways I'd really like" and I dug up and played the demo. Which I hated. The demo was trash and the claim that it only limited your stats was b.s., but after that, I gave it a second chance and pirated the game, played it for like 100+ hours and then bought it once it went on sale because I realized it was definitely something I'd enjoy.

17:51 Nope, I avoided SwSh like the plague when it came out. I only wound up playing it when my brother bought a copy of Shield about... two years later, I think? Maybe less. Long after they had already made a killing and the DLC was out. I was ready to write off the series completely, but I still had fun with it despite SwSh being genuinely one of the worst written stories in a Pokemon game I've ever seen and having a pretty bland wild area, which they spent so much time talking up, and boring routes... I mean at the end of the day it was still Pokemon and I realized this was all we were ever gonna get because people were too stupid to stop buying them even to save the series. So when BDSP and PLA released, I eventually got those and I picked up a copy of Sword as well. Your vote does not matter. That's the simple truth. Just like voting in the presidential elections, voting with your wallet has absolutely zero effect, because there are mountains of morons who don't care that they're being ripped off. So I gave up and now I just try to enjoy the series for what it is. I expect very little and take from it what I can and I've found a way to ignore its faults. I don't recommend people do this, necessarily, not do I encourage it, but it works for me. Taking a stand is pointless. The human race is too fucking stupid to stand beside you. Buy what you like and complain all you want. You're better off complaining on the internet, trying to convince *other people* to not buy things that piss you off than "voting with your wallet" like everyone claims.

By that point we were being grifted with overage charges, meaning you had to be careful about how much you downloaded. Before that point, the most internet I had was through dial-up on my grandfather's PC at his apartment, which didn't work with consoles either, and clogged up the phone.

I don't know if you've seen it on playstation, but things are bad. Like, you buy the disc to get the downloaded version, but somehow the playstation store version of the game and the disc's downloaded version are different, which leads to confusing times where they want you to pay for games that you already own.

With PlayStation if you buy a disc, you still need to insert the disc to play, no matter the downloaded the content. Unless you purchased the actual game, the disc is required.

Many games come out an absolute mess however the one mess I never seemed to encounter was Cyber Punk 2077. While everyone was complaining that it was broken on PS5 and series and PC I was playing on the already being abandoned at the time old console. I played cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox one x and encountered no more than graphic issues. Tearing, after images etc. Only had a car sink through the ground once. Loll I still have a few videos of the one or two probs I did see because I specifically remember thinking wow this is my first problem in this so called broken and unplayable game..... But once I moved over to series s I actually started to see more problems. I think they were already developing cyberpunk for old consoles and PC and then new gen hit mid development forcing them to either abandon one side of the table or make it work on every platform. My guess is it was more ready on older consoles and thats why my first playthrough was fine.

yah I don't know what it is about games but I always seem to dodge game breaking bugs most of the time. I try to avoid the internet when a game i want to play comes out so i don't get spoiled, and ill usually find out after I'm done with it that it was apparently a buggy mess. for cyberpunk i started playing it on the original xbox one when it first came out, and the only real bug i ran into before i stopped playing was it would crash at the scene where jackie died and i just had to load a save a couple times before it didn't crash again. and the only reason i stopped playing at the time was because it was really grainy and hurt my eyes when i played so I wanted to wait to get a newer console to play it on. so when i went on the internet and found out the state it was in i was really surprised because i was on one of the most outdated hardwares you could be on and didn't have a lot of the problems people were running into. and the most recent case of this is when i played pokemon scarlet. I had a really fun time playing the game and i was curios on what other people thought about it. so when I looked on the internet and found out I was "part of the problem", and that "pokemon fans will buy an absolute garbage buggy mess of a game, which is why gaming will never get better" I was surprised. because in all 80+ hours I had played of the game at the time. the most absolutely world breaking, earth shattering bug i had was that the framerate would dip in a couple areas or during certain weather events. and i thought that was to be expected speaking that it was on the switch and all. and as much as i wish the problems didn't exist so people could enjoy playing the games they want. i also think that the internet makes people become more cynical and harsh critics to the point that most seem to forget that a lot of bugs are random so some people might not have encountered them.

@@thomaseborall6989 exactly. Most of my cyberpunk issues were funny moments. I never even got those crashes that would occur during certain missions. Instead I would get random crashes in-between while driving around. And it's not like I didn't play a lot. 70+ hours on my first playthrough. I pushed the game to it's limits spawning as many vehicles as I could at once and duplicating items and only didn't 100% because I played at launch before the update that fixed a few of the events that weren't marked on the map. So I literally only missed content that wasn't somehow tracked on the map or quests.

i played cyberpunk2077 on release without looking at any content about the game and i just had 1 bug that needed a reboot and I noticed unrealistic damage from mines sometimes, thats it. the game played fine the story was okey. most of the stuff that got hated on was in the endgame and missing core elements that didn't impacted the gameplay inside the story.

I know a trick to skip KZbin ads quickly, sometimes works, just press the (i) icon above where the countdown to back to video is (i) -(why this ad?) then (stop seeing this ad), (Yes) then (the reason) or (close) and (done) then the ad is skipped, sometimes it doesnt say Stop seeing this ad, but most of the time it appears, ya welcome

Buying a broken/bugged game is like going out to buy a car and having it missing two tires, the steering wheel, and 30% of the chassis. You're paying for a full product and it's not wild to think that you deserve more than what these companies are putting out nowadays

It's Story and/or gameplay. Games like Undertale did well because of the story. Not saying its gameplay was terrible, but what you hear about is the story. On the other end, there are games like most first-person shooter pvp games where it's all about the gameplay. Then there are games like the Elden Ring and God of War where people talk about both.

There's game-breaking bugs and then there's fun glitches and areas we're not meant to explore. A small % of gamers will exploit those unpolished areas. As long as the main gameplay areas are bug-free, Devs shouldn't waste development time debugging every square foot of the game.

There’s only one video game company that has somewhat done a game without updates and that is Nintendo. Not all but there are a few. New Super Mario Bros U on switch if I recall is still a 1.0 game file. Which is shocking in this day and age. But then again Nintendo usually doesn’t have absolutely horrible launch days and has quality control on their AAA titles.

also my brother in christ, you do know most games are bigger than our blue rays right? so unless you enjoy multi disk, or propietary cartbridges for flash memory its physically impossible to put most AAA games on a single disk or two even. While yes, the argument of "they kept working on bugs due to rush after they press the master." is true, the reason why this happened in the first place is because of storage format limitations so developers went 'lets put the basis in the master and actually do bug testing on those 2 month would be doing taking a break'. The sad realityt is that we do not have the evolution of cheap mass storage that can offer copy protection so developer will keep this tactics to accelerate release dates and get that sweet cash flow sooner
