The Ahsoka Season Finale Reminds Us What's Wrong With Star Wars

Ahsoka wasn’t hamstrung by being a fifth season of a show not everyone watched, or people not understanding some character motivations or who other characters were entirely. In the end, the problem was that whether it was called Ahsoka Season 1 or Rebels Season 5, it didn’t end up being a season of television at all. Instead, it was individual nostalgia plays sprinkled through long patches of nothing. And what makes that so frustrating is that creator Dave Filoni absolutely rocks at delivering impactful, emotional, engaging and most importantly original Star Wars stories. Or at least he usually does.
I want to be clear: I love the character Ahsoka. Hera Syndulla - criminally underused in this season - is one of the best contemporary Star Wars characters. I quickly grew to love Ezra Bridger after catching up on Rebels and meeting him in live-action in this new series. And there were even a couple of episodes of Ahsoka that really tugged at my Star Wars loving heart. The first two episodes really felt like Star Wars, which never stops being a great feeling. And yeah, of course the Anakin episode got me in my feelings (it’s the music, it’s always the damn music).
But getting me in my feelings is easy, as I’m secretly a huge sap (that’s between us), and television seasons have a job to tell a complete story regardless of whether or not they’re meant to lead into something else. Ahsoka doesn’t just not tell a complete story, but the fraction of the one it does tell just hangs in the air like the big bad thing they were trying to stop all season - Thrawn returning to the main galaxy - doesn’t matter at all.
By the end of the season, not a single one of our main characters addresses the fact that the very thing that everyone was trying to stop happened. Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) is completely at peace, seemingly indifferent to the threat the galaxy faces - despite the entire motivation of her character has been to stop Thrawn since her introduction into the live-action stories. Then Hera (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Ezra (Eman Esfandi) meet up and neither exchanges a word about what his return means. The excitement these characters show to be reunited is important, of course, but not at the cost of engaging with your series’ own stakes. It would have been as easy as following up their tear-brimmed smiles with the dawning realization of what seeing each other again truly meant, or Ezra pointing it out to Hera who may not have realized that his return included the return of Thrawn.
Watch the video for all our thoughts on why Ahsoka Season 1 reminds us what's wrong with Star Wars!

one thing is how they devalued what a Jedi is. like anyone can basically become a jedi with 1 week of training. Luke, Rey, and now Sabine. It was sort of passable with Luke because he was the son of the chosen one. so why did the jedi temple take those kids at birth train them, only to have a few become padawan and a few of those end up becoming Jedi and even fewer still becoming masters?
@JLJK69
@JLJK69 Жыл бұрын
They devalued it? Luke was in the VERY FIRST movie and according you became a jedi with 1 week of training. That seems like it would set a tone for everything to following. And, hasn't Sabine been training on and off for like 10 years? Didn't just happen for her.
@Peecamarke

@@JLJK69ikr? What are they talking about?
@mikedangerdoes
@mikedangerdoes Жыл бұрын
It's implied that Luke did a lot of training, mostly off-screen and mostly in between Empire and Return. For example, he left training early, against Yoda's advice, and sought a confrontation with Vader. What happened? He got absolutely schooled. Up until then he only ever uses his Force powers very situationally, and mostly to supplement his own skill and luck. So he's actually a great example of why training and dedication are necessary, and why Rey's development is so annoying.
@daniellewis4154
@daniellewis4154 Жыл бұрын
Ali Ali, your arguments about Sabine are flawed: first off, Sabine had a lot of trike to train as it was elaborated that Sabine trained with Ahsoka for a while offscreen and she was shown training quite a lot. Secondly, Sabine did lose a lightsaber duel against a dark sider as she was stabbed in the first episode. She was also shown constantly struggling with utilizing the force a lot
@maxpowers4436
@maxpowers4436 Жыл бұрын
Sabine is not some random bozo. Shes a skilled former mandalorian bounty hunter. She is experienced in combat and heavy stress fighting situations. For the better part of 20 years shes been surrounded by force users and has been on again off again apprentice to Ahsoka. She is not "just anyone".

That's not her issue. It's that Thrawn returns and gets what he wants in the finale, which is something everyone is trying to prevent, but they don't really react to it as you'd think they would. I’m sick of how Star Wars is apparently now only about “the fights” and lightsabers…it lacks someone with an actual vision and a grand plan for where to take the story, it feels like anytime an idea pops into someone’s head they have to make a series or a cartoon about it. They have the perfect opportunity now with the strikes, to actually step back and decide what story they want to tell.

Wdym? Whether you enjoyed it or not Ahsoka had a character arc where she became a more hopeful person. It wasn't just about the lightsaber fights.
@daniellewis4154

Ac Cameron the ash solar series was not all about lightsaber fights. There was a lot of plot telling going on in between the fights and the show even had the leads trying to look for Ezra. Star Wars is not all about getting what you want all the time and you have to accept that you can’t always get what you want in life especially from media. Even the lightsaber duels are fantastic as was the dream sequence in fifth episode.

There is a grand plan. This is all going to get wrapped up in a crossover movie. You want the story all wrapped up in season 1 of a new series? That's ridiculous.

You touch on something with the remark that Hera was criminally underused. She was, and it's weird because if ONE person should be the protagonist of the story this show was trying to tell, it's her, not Ahsoka. Ahsoka may have been appeared in Rebels, but she wasn't really a main character. She didn't know Ezra all that well, and she didn't have a particular relationship with Thrawn as a villain. Hera on the other hand was basically the co-, then full leader of the Ghost crew, she did know Ezra well, and she directly interacted with Thrawn as antagonist, first when he was occupying her home planet and then later, his capture of her leads to the death of the man she loves. She's also military leader, so by all these factors, she's the natural choice to be the one to stand up to Thrawn, not the errant former Jedi. But she's not a space wizard with a laser sword, so she gets stuck in b-plot purgatory all season. HOPEFULLY she will get her due as a match for the villain going forward.

Star Wars is about the Skywalker Family. Fictional characters don't run out of stories or "age". The Last Jedi was a steaming pile of crap WITH NO STORY- A trilogy that had NO connection between the movies. This review was made by a 12-year-old girl that doesn't get it.

Butchered characters, plot armour, ridiculous concepts and logic gaps of JarJar proportions. A fan of 35 years finally called it a day. Since last Jedi the only things of quality have been Andor and Mando season 1. The rest of it has slowly killed any enjoyment the Star Wars galaxy used to have. Bring back the 80's and 90's before the expanded universe was slowly murdered.
