I was disqualified 37 years ago for failing a random breath test by being 20% over the limit. Therefore I became registered as a criminal. Interestingly I haven't had an accident in 50 years since I passed my driving test in 1974. I recently discovered that my criminal record will continue until my 100th birthday. In a recent episode of Police Interceptors the officers said that any person banned from driving is considered dishonest and untrustworthy. I don't break into houses, rob banks or attack people. However, despite that I am considered to be a criminal and a danger to others until I am 100 years old. Something wrong here with the law. I am a soft hearted gentle man who cares for others but somehow the law thinks I am a dangerous nasty man who hurts people. I therefore conclude that the law is complete madness.

I wonder how much it would improve the safety of drivers in the UK if they actually fixed the roads. I just drove from Dublin to Hamburg this week and do it a few times a year. One theme I notice is the south of the UK is the only place with truly awful roads including motorways. You can see the direct affect of this as its guaranteed that you will see breakdowns and crashes in the UK but it is highly unlikely to see anywhere else on the route. During the summer when I did the drive I seen someone in a Porsche SUV driving on the rim after a puncture because their was no hard shoulder because of a smart (dumb) motorway which made them most likely afraid to stop. Until this tech can be 100% effective in who it selects I don't think it should be used as some drivers could be constantly targeted by these systems because of an unusual driving style. This is not AI but a simple algorithm to detect specific patterns, companies like this are 20-50 years off true AI, they just use the term as a marketing gimmick that seems to have worked here. Saying that people who drink/drug drive are disgusting people.

PMSL you will be driving outside of the normal parameters as a traffic officer even when off duty. You will also find that people insured with certain insurers are more likely to be impaired along with driving certain models of car. UNLESS the full model (training data) they are using is disclosed then this could be what they are doing and nothing more (with reference to impairment). The important question is do they have or had access to the MIB and DVLA databases?

It is dangerous having friends sometimes, come on have 1 cigarette or come out & have one drink of alcohol. Next thing your drinking & smoking till your dead or perhaps you stop drinking after you have crashed into someone on the public highway but I think some drivers who have crashed into someone will just be like I need my alcohol & get into a vehicle & start driving whilst over the drink drive limit. When you signed on that dotted line to get your provisional driving licence that ment you will always follow The Highway Code & don't drink alcohol & get in a vehicle & drive. DRIVING IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT

I like the comment about being responsible for other road users. Even though it doesn't detect alcohol, it should now make it easier to catch drunk drivers. At the moment, I believe that the majority of the people that do drink and drive do it because there is little chance of being caught. I've known people do it for years before they get caught. It sounds like a brilliant piece of kit.

I’m 100% behind catching drink drivers, and as someone who drives HGV, I’ve noticed the massive increase in people using their mobile phones on their laps, increase the penalty for mobile phone usage, the huge problem I have with this technology is, what data is retained from the cameras, is the data collected stored on a database somewhere and for how long, what is preventing the data from being shared and abused by insurance companies who already share black box data to stealthily increase premiums. How long is it going to be before this technology is abused, are they governed by the data protection laws? Put more real police officers on the roads and stop wasting money on technology that will never match a traffic officer’s instincts.

I think taking drink / drug drivers off the road is a good thing. The problem is that the focus on speeding and drink driving means that nothing else is actioned. I drove the length of the M6 last week and the poor and dangerous driving i saw was breath-taking; poor lane discipline, lack of observation, people being mobile chicanes in lanes 2 and 3 doing 50mph, tailgating, overloaded trailers, unsecured loads. Where is the enforcement of these offences? The moment any of us touch 80mph on the motorway, we are getting a ticket and 3 points. The narrow focus of road policing down to speed and drinking driving is a real problem. A genuine question for the Officers; how many accidents are caused by speeding /drinking Vs the number that are caused by poor driving skill? (when i watch any dashcam videos it certainly seems to be the latter )

This isn't there to prosecute you, it is there to triage. A driver that doesn't meet the expected parameters gets pulled over for a quick chat, if the officers note something more amiss they will drug or breath test and let this do the talking. Just like going pass a police car on a side street. Though I'm sure regardless if a roll up or spliff you probably shouldn't be preparing it whilst driving?

The real question is does it save lives? If the percentages say yes, then it's a step in the right direction and another tool for detection. ANPR cameras were invented to follow suspected terrorists back in the 70s/80s...now they are integrated into every aspect of road safety....and yes road charging, but safety came first.

Usual silly comments. Don’t speed, you don’t get caught, don’t park badly, you don’t get a ticket, drive correctly, these cameras will not bother you. I drove under one of these yesterday and it doesn’t worry me at all.

If people did what they were told then there would be no need for them. But as people are idiots, these are needed.

About 5mins into the video when the guy is interviewing the lady about what she thinks in the background there is an advertisement saying "earn points and choose your rewards" showing a man behind the wheel of a car with his seat belt on using his phone???? When this video is about AI cameras detecting that???
