I think Gojira came out with the better album last year. When you first heard the singles, it was like "WOW". They nailed it. Dream Theater also made a good album, but they are probably more palatable in the Grammys universe. Not saying they are sellouts - they spent the first 10 years fighting record companies and eventually got enough momentum to tell the record companies to stop telling them what music to make. Dream Theater were a prog metal band that started just as the of the Grunge movement took off. The arena rock formula with a big "look at me" guitar solos was dying off. They succeeded because they were good.

I’ve been a Dream Theater fan for 20+ years. I’ve seen them live 9 times. This feels like a culmination of my fandom and I couldn’t be more proud. Congrats to the band and all of their fans. And to Mike Portnoy: You deserve this too!

Congratulations, almost 35 years ago, little did i know first time seeing an unknown band playing a small club called Sparks, completely left my jaw on the floor, a year or two later our two bands opening for Zebra at Sundance, now accepting a Grammy. We all knew from the first note 35 years ago, this was inevitable, Big Congratulations to all of you, and many, many more!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💽💽💽💽💽🥇🏆🏆🏆🏆🎼🎹🎤🥁🎸

1:18 "This song is in 17/8. So try tapping your foot to it.” Musicians on the stage laugh and smile Female host in green doesn't even wink... she didn't even understand what he was talking about.

@@Smileatlife37 True. I love them for their calm lyrics which is absent of vile and vulgar words. Sad to see a lot of DT fans using swear words especially the above mentioned word that was irrelevant to the praises.

The circle of vengeance for prog metal is complete! Finally DT wins a Grammy! So happy for you guys!

It was a great year for metal, hard to argue with the quality of music from Gojira and Mastodon especially this go round but DT has been deserving of this nod for YEARS and The Alien is the band in absolute top form. I'm so happy for the band, a true set of world leading musicians that deserve to be known as such on a mainstream level. Very well spoken, too, John, you make a great spokesperson for the band!

Also the detail that "God Hates A Coward" by Tomahawk is being played while JP walking on stage is at least as stunning as DT winning a Grammy!

The song the backing band plays during the walk up is God Hates a Coward. There’s a live version where Mike Parton kills it.

Was not expecting "God Hates a Coward" to be what the live band plays when DT is called up, thats pretty awesome

What a lively crowd. Although 3/4 of them did not know who the band is, the silence was justified by the praises of their fans worldwide. I've followed them since day 1 when I bought When Dream and Day Unite on cassette on a whim in my local Pamida store. I've followed them around since, congrats guys!

Who would’ve thought that Dream Theater would finally take home their first Grammy literally 30 years after their major label debut…great goin guys 🤙 But let’s be honest here…I&W, Awake, Scenes, Six Degrees, Octavarium, Distance…nearly every Dream Theater album has at least one or two Grammy-worthy moments on it. Hell, if it were up to me…Awake would be preserved in the national recording registry, so my opinion is a bit swayed.
