During the Battle of Westwind, an alien soldier finds himself fighting alongside humans. In the chaos of the war, he observes the peculiar customs of his human allies - their obsession with piling up food, playing mysterious "races", and enthusiastically touching everything around them. However, during a perilous descent to the planet Viridian IX, he witnesses one of their most surprising rituals - singing. Despite imminent danger and great loss, the human soldiers keep their spirits up by singing together in battle.

@@MultiTurbonoob You're welcome to disregard me. I know what I typed and willingly decided to post this. I'll tell my point of view. HFY is pretty frustrating to see because it's just narrative slop. From title to story. Often times you can straight up guess the story from just its title alone such as this. At the end of the day, they're all either powerfantasy at best or thinly veiled master race stuff at worst. I say the latter not out of politics or whatever, but merely a observation of a dangerous and common theme with these stories. I guess that's to be expected however considering much of HFY is written on reddit. I say the best HFY stories are those that aren't, I should probably have said the best HFY stories aren't those that explicitly go out of their way to be HFY and disregard aliens as a people that don't apparently have a concept of x mundane thing. I can argue Halo fights against this very well. The Humans are doing their damnest to fight for their survival against a genocidal crusade by the Covenant who are a collective of different aliens under one faith, that being of the great journey. Even the, the individuals of this collective faith are nuanced just as we do and carry more complex themes and get this, story. The arbiter is one great example, a disgraced commander who over time starts to question what is he truly fighting for and begins laying the seedbeds of rebellion just in time as his people were also being disgraced and favored for by the brutes due to the covenants politics. At the end of the day, read what you wish. I do offer some alternatives to look past HFY if desired. Scott Orson Cards ender series is a big one I can personally suggest regarding the relationship of the humans and the formics later down the line. Isaac Asimovs second foundation trilogy has aliens, with one major pov being one. Hammers Slammers for the more military look on things. Aliens perhaps? For a more funner/pulpy look into such themes, I can suggest John Carter of Mars perhaps.

David Drake doing the "Slammers" is all about the Slammers being masters of combat and not giving a fk about everyone else's opinion. Once you read all of those, there is other stuff out there, and the songs arent as bad as "Napalm sticks to kids". FYI John Carter of Mars is a book, the series is Barsoom. So if this isnt good enough, write your own.

@@grega2362 Never said Asimov wasn't epic. How much of 'Slammers have you read? Just wondering, because Drake explores different themes or parallels such as one story where the slammers are fighting Alien teleporting guerillas which takes a turn for the characters. Or, the Slammers getting tangled up in politics on a planet with civil war. Clarification noted but I am talking about the book particularly. That's like saying I have to make my own movie to criticize the same copy and paste stories that only spout what was just mentioned. Everything I've said is merely a suggestion to look beyond HFY and appreciate its themes in a more appropriate light without subscribing to dangerous ideas.
