The All Star game is everything wrong with the NBA

The NBA all star game is a representation of all that plagues the modern NBA. Lack of professionalism, lack of care, and a spoiled mentality. The NBA under Adamn Silver has been more so that of a daycare than a league of competitors. There are far too many things that just 10 years ago would be seen and treated with disdain. The standards of what should be are being thrown away for instant gratification. As someone who loves the game of basketball it is getting hard to watch and accept.

Why? So we can baby them even more and require even less work from them? Keep the all-star game. Fine the players for not doing their job. Also start deducting salaries for any games missed outside of any real verified injury, recent deaths or emergencies in the family. "I'm sore. I'm tired. I'm not mentally ready to play." Is not acceptable.

The league really needs to get rid of Adam Silver. We need David stern back. Adam Silver just wants to be their friend rather than their boss. Adam Silver and Current NBA players are killing the league. This is why old players talk a lot of crap about modern NBA. Might as well make it an NBA vs G-League All Star Game: One team wouldn't want to get embarassed and the other has a lot to prove. Edit: Or better yet, make the NBA All-Stars play the team that won the G-League. That way they'll have to play a well coordinated team that won a title together.

Not a bad idea, I think you’d be surprised how close the score would be. In all sports across the world I always say how athletes get paid SO MUCH more money for being just that little bit better than the athletes the tear below. NBA player vs G league player is a perfect example of this.

I think Shannon Sharpe had something this morning when he was on first take. "Players like the idea of getting selected but have no interest actually playing the game" Paying them is definitely NOT the solution. People who get picked for the All Star Game need to actually want to play, not just want to selected as one.

There's two major problems here: 1. Players are spoiled af nowadays, at least in the past they took shit seriously because they knew they were in a very privileged position. And I'm not even an old head. I just turned 22. I started watching the NBA after the Cavs title, but the recent behavior of the league's All-stars shows how entitled they are 2. The NBA sorely misses having a commissioner who isn't a bitch, Adam Silver spent the last decade bending backwards for players and lacks a firm hand to discipline players when needed. I don't love Stern, but some of the shit that happened in the last 10 years would never happen with him in office. We need someone who can give a reality check to these entitled millionaires who cry about having do their job 80% of the time, when every other generation before them could do it without saying a word about it.

One thing that really drives me up the wall about all of this is how we constantly hear about how athletic the players today are. How much better their training is, how they're in peak physical condition compared to players of years past who played in a league of plumbers, and totally couldn't hang with today's talent. The plumbers showed up to work. The plumbers put the effort in night in night out, regular season, all-star, playoffs, whatever it was, they played way harder than these guys. And the players of yesteryear got paid peanuts in comparison to do it. If today's players are on such a higher level, in such incredible, fantastic, godly shape, why can't they do what these supposedly lesser athletes were able to do year after year? If they're so much better: Prove it. Show up to every game you possibly can. Give each and every game your all on both ends of the court. Personal pride in your craft alone should be the only incentive you need. Otherwise I don't want to hear any of these guys anywhere near a GOAT conversation.

You know Broussard actually brought up something very interesting. The further the game has evolved away from the paint - the more the all star game has sucked, because the shot distribution is ONLY 3s and layups/dunks. Before every player fell in love with jacking up 3s, the 2-4 positions would be playing in the mid post/paint, which if you think about it kind of forces defense to happen in a way. So the all star game is pretty much a microcosm of everything wrong with the league today.

When I played ball in college we had 3 workouts a day on top of film study. If you were injured you were still there, just not participating in full runs. But you’d still do walk through of plays and such. It’s just crazy to see the hunger of college athletes contrasted with the pampered performance of modern professional athletes. Teams of the past rode coach on planes, took buses, whatever to make a game. Birds back was so bad he literally laid down in pain when he was on the bench preparing to go back in. Isaiah played an entire game on an ankle sprain so bad that by the end of it his foot couldn’t fit in the shoe anymore. I’m only 23. I’m far from an old head. My own game is modeled after modern day. I’m the clown pulling from half court. But there needs to be a stop to this. The only way is to effect the pockets in a major way. Pride for the game has disappeared. I’d argue that’s why no one has touched the level of the warriors in a decade. With the only down years they’ve had being attributed to injury. They’re the only ones that take pride in the game. Deciding to go down with the ship of their trio as well. I know it sounds like I’m glazing them but it’s just what I see. Hell I grew up a heat fan before Lebron ruined wades legacy. For how good some of these new guys are none of them have a competitive bone in their body. Too scared to compete. Too scared to guard the best player. Kobe wanted it. He wanted that challenge. As did Wade. As did Jordan. So we need to stop putting these guys in comparison with the old. If Lebron was on a goat level as everyone claims he would address this as the supposed ambassador that he is. The same way Kobe had done in retirement, and the way he kept it competitive until his retirement. They say this newer generation is more skilled than the previous. But I don’t see it if they are always too scared to go at each other. We got to see Kobe’s progression every match up against Jordan. From getting embarrassed to dropping 30 and 40 on the greatest to do it. We saw Kobe go from airballing to dominating because Jordan guarded Kobe even as a 40 year old. There’s a reason Europe is eclipsing the US in basketball. We are NOT the best at this sport anymore. They simply don’t compete. And with that becomes no more innovation, no more growth. The pistons had to compete to get past Boston. Then the bulls past the pistons. Then when that power vacuum was created it was a scramble until Detroit once again solidified themselves. There was always a progression. A right of passage that continued the standard of excellence and at times surpassed the previous. But this only happens when they compete. If Isaiah joined Boston Isaiah never would have been as great as he ended up being. He would have won more. Had more accolades. Absolutely. But to me that’s not what defines greatness. What defines greatness is that 6 foot guard limping up and down the court giving the Lakers BUCKETS refusing to lose that game in the finals. That heart and grit is created through hardship. All these guys do now is stack the table so far in their favor they don’t know what the hell loss or hardship is. And let’s them look at the other for validation and gives them a scapegoat. KD did it with Westbrook. Embiid did it with harden. This game is dying.

Brian Windhorst has suggested that athletes should be paid. Fans can have a more significant impact than they realize by refusing to purchase tickets, attend games, or buy merchandise. The NBA will take notice when revenue begins to decline. The NBA understands, like politicians, that there is a lack of unity among fans. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was successful because African Americans refused to ride or spend money, causing a significant economic impact. Regardless of personal feelings, the key is to hit the NBA where it hurts - in their wallets. If fans stop buying season tickets, attending games, and purchasing merchandise, the NBA will be forced to listen and make changes that will satisfy fans.

@@cameronno6039Also it will take a player probably of AllStar caliber to step up and speak up. No player is gonna risk that when they are paid millions. I made a post on NBA Reddit regarding my disappointment about AllStar weekend saying that I hate that I love basketball because what am I paying for and NBA mods deleted it. You cant even discuss your dissatisfaction as a fan. My post got like 50comments in 2seconds. I will feel no pain if the league starts losing money. But it will take a person within the league with power to step up. Kyrie did and look at what they did to him💯

It's a paradox. They dont want to try for 82 games while making millions of dollars, but also don't want shorter seasons, because they make less millions. When todays role players today are making all star money from a couple decades back, the pay scale has gotten out of control. Ironically as a Timberwolves fan, that Garnetts first big contract is kinda the domino that set it all in motion

It's obvious the the league has been castrated...The removal of physical play has made the league play much to soft. Players lack the edge to want to prove something...when big brother used to bust your ass in the driveway every night in one on one it made you wanna prove something and even though you loved him you would still knock him on his ass if given the chance. It fuels competition and motivates players more than money and shooting uncontested 3's. No one has the attitude anymore of MJ, Kobe, Bird, Thomas, Malone, Magic, Barkley, etc...Players now come and go as they please from team to team, they have way to much freedom. Adam Silver is the worst commissioner and he is killing the league. I remember when the NBA was more physical than international play and now it's the opposite, now we are the candy asses who are falling behind.

All-star game isn't worth it when you have playoff aspirations. Not worth getting injured. All the players see this as a vacation, nothing more. Agree on the point about contracts. These players are guaranteed generational wealth, so it's not surprising we are seeing an increase in player apathy. I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing players "1 and done" the NBA and basically leaving after their first guaranteed contract

You're absolutely correct, I think the Allstar game should be a display of the young rising talent in the league with also making it a spectacle. The premise of all the stars playing at once is attractive but it doesn't really matter when there's no underlying narrative at play and I think the NBA should delve into that a bit more. Also giving it to players who actually want to play or ppl who make have beef with each other. I also think the in season tournament should be moved to the all star to give older players something to play for or create another version of that for the break that effects home court or something, I'm not sure, just spit balling. I'm sure I can come up with something better than they have currently.

One drastix way to get them to play more for real, a no free point rule in the ASG, if you're not guarded and you score, your bucket won't count, if you play hard offense but you can't score, the defender gets 1 point for their team. That won't fix anything unless they care about the score being anything above 30 points, because they could say "F this I'm not playing, bring the 3rd unit" and give out the least scoring ASG ever, but that would be more entertaining than seeing guys that would actually help their rival to score just because they don't care about it.

The fact that there's a big score, frequent dunks & all the best players on the court misses the point that what makes the game interesting is the competitive rivalries. No defence & just going through the motions as a professional player makes a mockery of the All-star game.

Nick wright had an idea that I tweaked. Every all star has to contribute a portion of his money that year (according to the size of contract, the bigger the contract the bigger the $ amount) and all the money goes into a pot and you play for that money and the winners split it. America vs the world or Europe vs the world could be good incentive too

For the winning team: Salary cap forgiveness/restructuring for the teams with members on the All-Star team and increased lottery balls for the teams in the conference who are lottery eligible. Makes getting on the team worth it with the cap forgiveness. And the winning teams’ conference will inevitably get better, making it more likely that these benefits continue.

The NBA this last decade must have meant N-ot B-asketball at A-ll. Inflated stats, no defense, load management bs, no travelling and carry calls, cringefest flopping, self-proclaimed GOATs, whiny narcissist me-first mentality over winning and the team. Remember when Iverson missed practice because of a loss and everybody was losing their minds, now players are missing 20-40 games faking injuries, and the media are still defending these clowns.

I think the main problem is the perception that the NBA players are here to entertain us. The NBA is a sport first. Some athletes don't dedicate their lives to becoming the 1% of top athletes in the world to "entertain" fans. They do it to be the best and to win. If it's entertainment to anyone, it's going to be for some of the consumers. Some people don't watch basketball for entertainment, they watch to see elite basketball. The second issue is the damn media. If the media would stop dumping on players for not being available "when it counts", players wouldn't have as much of a problem with the regular season. But when they basically criticize players for being injured, it puts pressure on the players to be available (load manage, miss second night of back to back, mysterious injuries, etc.) so that they are available for the playoffs. The media has been part of the problem for years. In the end though, I don't think any one thing is going to fix the ASG. You can't pay players because that doesn't motivate everyone. I know if I made millions, why would I care about an additional 500K. I already have more than I could spend in a lifetime. Some are going to have that mentality. You can change the rules, but no matter what eventually you're going to get to a point where it doesn't matter. What might make a difference is eliminating fan voting and media from the all star ballots. You could have the participants voted based on stats instead of popularity, which would make players earn there spot every year instead of getting granfathered in because of popularity. There was no way LEBron James should've been a starter for the all star game. He doesn't even play defense, so how in the world can you expect him to in the ASG? There are simply too many problems for the ASG to get back to whatever it once was - eventually it will be eliminated.
