I remember Burt Mustin best as Gus the Fireman on Leave It To Beaver and as Jud Fletcher on The Andy Griffith Show. Here's the story of how this car salesman became one of Hollywood's greatest character actors.

One of OUR SO MANY MOST FAVOURITE CHARACTER ACTORS, WE USED TO HAVE and get to enjoy still having him now beings so, so many of THE VERY GREATEST PROGRAMS FROM BETTER ERAS, AS IT, 'S BEEN A ABSOLUTE UN-BELIEVABLE BIG SWING TO THE EXTREME FAR SIDE OF THE SPECTRUM OF ALL WHAT IS OF ONLY IS WHAT IS OF WHAT IS TRUE OF LIVING A GOOD AND TRULY WHOLESOME LIFE AS LIVING WAS.

@@elianamiller2666 It was fun as I got older and would watch reruns. Burt would pop up on so many shows and I would tell my friends that I was related to him. It was crazy how many different shows he was on. I do wish I could have gotten to know him but he died when I was about 5. I still remember seeing his picture in my grandmother's house as well as her sibling's houses. They were so proud of him. That side of my family were from Tucson and have a very long history there.

Burt’s last role was on the Mary Tyler Moore spinoff, “Phyllis,” starring the great Cloris Leachman. He was hilarious. It’s unfortunate he passed while the show was in production. No one replaced him because no one could. What a great guy he was.

I was a big fan of Burt as Gus the Fireman. One of my favorite episodes of "Twilight Zone " is a Christmas show called "Inherit the Meek" starring Art Carney as an alcoholic department store Santa wishing there was a real Santa. Bert plays the part of a fellow derelict living at a mission house somewhere in the slums of the city. But the best memory I have of Bert is one of his last appearances on the "Tonight Show" shortly before his death. Bert had just finished some TV or movie work and Johnny asked him if he has anything else planned . He said that at his age planning is a waste of time. He then said " You know John , I had a guy call me and wanted to sell me an annuity which he said was certain to increase my initial investment 200 times in just 25 years. I told him Son, at my age I don't even buy GREEN BANANAS. Carson nearly fell off the chair laughing. Burt just winked and smiled. Classic TV!

His wife was played by Madge Blake ( Larry Mondello's mom and Aunt Harriet on Batman). They ask Rob and Laura to guess how long they've been married knowing everyone thinks they've been married many years. They finally announce they will be celebrating 5 glorious years together. They met at the cemetery - their respective spouses died on the same day and were buried in adjoining plots! :) Bert goes on to say a couple times; "She straightened me out!" What a great time!

Burts appearance on The Tonight Show was special. Johnny treated him with the honor and respect that he had earned in the industry during a time when there were only 3 Television Networks and a limited amount of opportunities to work. Besides all the credited roles, you can see Burt in countless cameo appearances in westerns, police shows, comedies and other shows and movies which were popular during this time. I was born in the 1950s and grew up during a time when some actors often had multiple guest appearances on the same show, portraying different characters. It took a special actor to be able to pull this off. My personal favorite character is his time on the Andy Griffith Show. Thanks for recognizing one of the great character actors of that golden age of film and television. He was very humble about his success, often saying that he just happened to be in the right place at the right time. That may be true in getting recognized, but you had to be a special talent to build the reputation he earned. Especially when you consider that his career was just getting started when most actors were retiring.

I remember him in an episode of Mary Tyler Moore, when May get's burglarized Twice. He's sitting on the bench in the police station and starts to chat with Mary, and begins to tell Mary of his obligation as an old man to sit on park benches. he then proudly reveals that he's been mugged 8 times, to which Mary reacts with surprise. He then tells her that sitting on park benches all day doesn't help. The delivery of that line makes me laugh every time I see it.

I loved him as Gus the fireman, even when I was in Jr. High & High School and watching the program in its first run, or recently now that I am his age. He had a line in one episode I liked so well I wrote it down. The Bev went to see Gus, I think when he couldn't join the Boy Scouts because he was too young, Gus said something like, "You know, I have found that whatever you want to do most, you are either too young or too old for."

Burt Mustin had such a way about his approach in any character he played. He was that elderly gentleman we all knew and loved some how. It was the Uncle or Grandpa we all wished WE had. Burt Mustin always made such an impression on his audience, with every-single scene. He was ALWAYS likable! I love him on "All In The Family" as Jusin Quigley. One of my fondest memories of Burt Muston was when he sang some of the ditties from his youth. It was on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. The audience went wild - and so did I. I loved his appearance on The Andy Griffith Show. I remember thinking, just when was the man born, because everything I ever saw Burt in he an old man. When I googled him and the year that he was it blew away. He was a very good actor. Now anytime I’m watching one of those old black/white movies I’m curious to see when those actors were born. It blows me away when I see actors born in 1874 etc. To me it’s like seeing those old Classical musicians on film. Just like Burt, they will forever live on film. It just really blows my mind.

Burt Mustin also played an old Tarzan actor on THE MONKEES episode "Monkees Marooned". He appeared through the whole episode in a Tarzan outfit at the age of 83. I remembered about Freddie Prinze also dying just after Burt did as soon as you mentioned when Burt passed. Burt was more than 70 years older than Freddie, and it was sad to lose both of them then. When he died, Burt had just made his final acting appearances on PHYLLIS, playing Mother Dexter's new husband. Judith Lowry, who played Mother Dexter, died about 2 months earlier, just before their last episode aired.

Burt graduated from Pennsylvania Military College (PMC), now Widener University, in 1903. He remains one of our most beloved alumni. He passed away in 1977 at the age of 92. In his memory the theater in Widener’s Alumni Auditorium was named “Burt Mustin Theater.” That was quite an honor since another well known PMC alumnus was Cecil B. DeMille, one of Hollywood’s most famous movie producers.

Great job giving credit to an actor everyone has seen but doesn't truly know. I remember him from The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, Andy Griffith his Disney movies, Dragnet, Emergency and Adam-12. When you say he was everywhere, that is an understatement. My wife and I use to play the "Burt Game" which predates the Cheers "Norm" sequence. Anytime he showed up in a film or TV re-runs we would yell out "Burt". Thinking about that now, that would have made an excellent drinking game back in the day. Again, A Great Job for a superb actor. 👍👍👍
