I visited in November and it was fantastic out of season. Everywhere was still open but it was pretty quiet and you could enjoy a lot of the gardens with few others around. In the summer it is so popular you are in massive crowds. Another tip is that there is a direct bus from Milan Bergamo Airport which is where Ryanair flies super cheap. So you can fly there and hop on a cheap bus that takes you directly to Lake Como for like 25€. So no need to hire a car or go via Milano to get a train or transport and once you are there you take ferries around anyway.

italy is full of gems , the less cash you have the more time you need to find your gem. Best food on the planet with mild weather all year around will increase your emotional serenity..The nice thing about italy is that people have a broad knowledge in many more field then just the one required to survive and this makes encounters interesting.You may not get a beatifull mansion but you get a lifestyle that is rich.

Mischa Lauren You don't have to be rich to visit Lago di Como, you just need to afford a low cost flight to Milano and then you can take a bus. Of course you can't go into some of the private villas but you can go into any town of the lake and also visit quite some of the historic villas and palaces that have been turned into public museums. You probably wont be able to afford a fancy lunch/dinner in one of the many luxury restaurants but there are a lot of regular places and pizzerias where you can eat, also plenty of small business shops in which you can buy sandwiches or such... Lago di Como for us in Italy is just a geographical place, there are around 500.000 people that live in the many towns on it's shores and 99% are regular people with regular jobs, 1% maybe are the billionaire villa owners and mostly they are never even there. Lake Como is awesome : I can recommend 2 Hotels one being Hotel Villa Serbelloni in belagio and in Tremezzo Grand Hotel Tremezzo with 3 outdoor snd 1 Indoor swimming pool spa- fabulous overlooking lake. We loved it here.
