The Amazing Spider-Man was a fast-tracked reboot after the creative process of Raimi's Spider-Man 4 fell apart. Despite always liking the movie overall, I've never been able to connect with this version of the character...and I finally figured out why.

I love when Spider-Man is quippy and makes fun of the villains, one of many reasons I love The Spectacular Spider-Man show(which I recommend to every Spidey fan) and I think these two films do that the best of the three live actions in that area, but they are still flawed and in some ways dissapointing

I actually love the suit from this movie. And I love how Andrew actually acts like a spider, he makes the web in the sewers to find the lizard and he crawls around the lizard like an actual spider I've always loved, is it the best movie ever? No but I have a lot of fun with it

I will say I enjoy this movie. With your point on Garfield's Parker I have a counter argument. Peter is a teenager so if he's given this power it'll likely make him more punkish. I also feel his behavior toward Ben ultimately made his death more tragic because of how he acted prior

I like this film. As a whole this film isn't my cup of tea especially compared to the Tobey Maguire trilogy, but Andrew Garfield IS MY SPIDER-MAN. This guy made the film. You can tell TASM is made in a post-The Dark Knight era and that dark and gritty spin doesn't work for Spidey for me, has a very melancholic feel, especially compared to the epic, heroic and almost operatic Spider-Man 2002 and the more vibrant sequel TASM2, and the kid-friendly Tom Holland films (which I also don't like), but honestly, as a film, it is good. Andrew Garfield is definitely the heart and soul of the film, I empathize most with this 'cool' 'edgy' Spider-Man because he is a sassy, douchey, cool but lonely guy that has a lot of problems like anger and abandonment issues. I love how he is obsessed with his parents' disappearance, it gives him bit of a spy-like edge, and he at times are really dark and the whole motivation for him to become Spider-Man was out of vengeance, that he slowly figures out through helping people he could become a better person, almost like a self-redemption! That is a very interesting spin on the character, that sassiness have thrown a lot of people off but it works so well for me. Also Gwen Stacy is the best live-action Spider-Man love interest, period. The colour-grading is muted but the cinematography is great, I feel if they colour correct it it would be much easier to look at. The soundtrack is very typically James Horner, you can hear Aliens, Star Trek and Avatar, RIP.

The movie gets a little too much flack than it deserves. I think both iterations of Spidey, whether it'd be McGuire or Garfield, can work in the context of their respective universes. There's always pros and cons to each.

To me, this movie always felt like Sonys response to the Nolan trilogy of batman. Like it was their attempt at a dark and gritty reboot. Hollywood was trying this alot with varying degrees of success around this time like with Robocop and Dredd.glad you pointed it out too. They crank up the color and whimsical tone in the next one but I thought ASM 2 was a disaster.

Great video Cody as always. As for this film i actual really enjoyed it. It was refreshing seeing a new villain in a Spiderman film. The origin story was a little weak, from a writing standpoint. Some other writing issues, but overall I thought this was a great version of Spiderman and this world, as a Rami trilogy fanboy.✌ So excited for NWH. The one spoiler free review I saw has me thinking there are surprises coming. Don't know what to expect and that's exactly where I want to be.

Awesome review man and on point too, yeah my thoughts on TASM were always wishy washy because 1) grew up with the raimi films so those were my go too if I was in a spider-man mood. 2) it just felt so weird that we just had to accept the fact that sony just wanted to move on when in reality there was still more to tell with the raimi SM universe. But at this point I have fun watching TASM movies because whether they wanted to fit in with the dark tones and change a whole lot but not really change anything, they still delivered watchable movies.

I grew up with Tobey’s Spider-Man and was 7 years old when Spider-Man 3 came out. Tobey is my Spider-Man. I had every action figure, burger king toy, t shirt, the video game, yadda yadda. I was obsessed. My mom rented it for me from Movie Gallery every weekend when I was in 2nd Grade and me and my friends would theorize about Spider-Man 4 at school daily. We would write down links to the fake fanmade trailers on KZbin that we totally believed were real and pass them around at school. I vividly remember that hype as a kid being crushed when I was 12 and I saw the trailer for this movie. Completely refused to watch it and wanted nothing to do with it. Gave it a shot in 2015 when I double featured both films and I didn’t think they were too bad. Didn’t watch them again though and really dug Tom Holland in Civil War going forward. Gave these two movies a rewatch a few weeks ago at College while binging the franchise and man, this movie just doesn’t work for me now. Really disliked it for all the same reasons. Something that drove me nuts was at the end when Peter is slipping off the slanted windowed roof of the building and Dr Connors saves him. Like, you’re Spider-Man! You can stick to the walls!

This one is still my favorite. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone spending time together on screen is just head-and-shoulders better than any of the other combinations we've ever had, and for me, all other flaws in this one pales in comparison to that upside. This film is a real mixed bag for me. Marc Webb systematically fixed every single complaint I had with Sam Raimi's films, but it was all wasted on a movie that otherwise covered the exact same ground as Raimi's first Spidey flick. I did not need another origin story so soon, even if it's one with all of the unwanted schmaltz excised out of it. That said, the movie gets huge points for depicting 1. a Spider-Man who behaves like Spider-Man and 2. a love story that's charming rather than tedious.

Tobeys films are better, but Andrews universe has way more potential with how it ended. That second movie ended on like 5 cliffhangers, even literally mid battle with Rhino. Tobey's Spider man 3 felt like the end of a trilogy, whereas with Andrew, I'd be more excited to see a TASM3. Yes I'm aware I'm in the minority.

I think the best way to look at all the different Spider-Man movies is equate them to the comics. By this I mean that in the comics there are different creative teams. The writer will often takes the story in different directions and the artist sometimes changes the look of what Spider-Man and what the city looks like. This is just a long way of saying enjoy each version for what it is and try not to compare. There will always be creative teams in comics you love and others not so much. Myself I enjoy all 3 versions in the movies.

Im going to live on this island alone, but theres a thin line between chemistry and cringe and Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield are at times for me hard to watch. I hate the way Uncle Ben is killed in this movie in one of the dumbest ways possible, spidermans motivation being revenge at first, makes his costume to cover up his crimes, uncle ben’s killer plot being thrown away, over romanticizing his parents, dont care for this selfish version of peter parker and at the end he doesnt learn his lesson. Just not a fan of this movie. I do like the score, the effects, the stan lee cameo and emma stone looks great as a blonde. As always really enjoyed the review Cody!

I’ll admit, it wasn’t until I actually saw TASM that I enjoyed this new rebooted Spider-Man. I did NOT like the new costume, the teaser, the trailer, or really the casting. It looked like Sony was trying to wrap The Dark Knight around Spider-Man and I was about to be sick. But Andrew and Emma SOLD Peter and Gwen so well. I loved that they used faithful elements like Peter having to *make* his web and his costume. No Mr. Stark to Grandfather crap into his life conveniently to save the day. I also liked that Gwen was not some shrieking shrew that MJ had been reduced to by Spider-Man 3. She didn’t even scream when the Lizard cornered her and instead tried to ignite him. She did her best to keep her head in panicked situations. I also liked how Spider-Man fought: setting webs and listening for vibrations or wrapping the Lizard in a cocoon during the high school fight.

Yeah Cody I see what you mean, When these first came out I hated them because I couldn’t see anyone else in the role besides Tobey but now going back and watching them now this is my second favorite of the 3. I feel Garfield deserved that third movie and it’s honestly ashamed we were left without it. I thought this one was very good, my only complaint which is kinda mixed is I felt the origin story and the movie as a whole is basically the first Spider-Man done over again with him just having Webb shooters this time but I do think they do an even better job showing his brains and really showing how he learns his powers.

I was in high school when the Maguire Spider-Man films came out (the first one at least) and I still prefer Garfield in the role. His Spider-Man moves better, hands down has the best webswinging (opening from TASM2 is untouched ) and integration of webs in his fights and has the best Spider-Man persona. It’s his Peter Parker that I’m not totally on board with. I never bought into Tobey either. He looked 30 in the first film (and don’t get me started on that Mary Jane. I’ll never underhand why he loved her). Id be most exited for a Garfield movie over a Maguire or a holland movie at this point.

In wrestling, there is a term, transitional champion. It is when they put the belt on someone for a short time, only as a bridge between the previous champ, and the one the booker really wants as champ. Example, Bob Backlund to Iron Sheik to Hulk Hogan, Sheiky Baby was the transitional champion. Andrew Garfield to me feels like a transitional Spider-Man. Maybe because Toby Maguire got 3 movies, and now, Tom Holland has had 3 movies, not counting appearances in other MCU movies, but Andrew Garfield has only had 2. Maybe that's why it feels like it to me.

I love this film. It’s a different take on Peter, but I admire that. He’s selfish in the beginning but that’s part of his arc. He’s selfish and when he gets powers he’s even more selfish. I think what was interesting is he doesn’t become SpiderMan until after he gets the suit. Him getting the suit was a step in his journey but he was still a vigilante and he wasn’t SpiderMan yet. He didn’t truly become Spiderman until the bridge scene. That’s the 1sts scene where he’s selfless. That point on Peter is a true hero and always looking for someone to save. That’s why he stops looking for Ben’s killer. For one thing he’s long gone by now, but primarily he was being a selfish vigilante. He has now learned great responsibility. Just later than Ben wanted him to. He felt the power and after the bridge scene (I think particularly when he’s sitting looking at his mask) understands the responsibility. He is now a selfless hero who will help everyone. He is no longer on a vengeful vendetta. Captain Stacy was right at that dinner scene. Peter was not protecting people, but now he’s finally learned and become SpiderMan. In this film we see his search for a father. His father left him at a very young age and then he had Ben. Ben was good enough but he continues to look for that fatherless void that was left in his life. Than he finds Connors. He gives Connors the formula and he becomes the Lizard. I just adore what they did with it and I relate to this Peter a lot more than Holland or Maguire (Love Maguire, don’t take that the wrong way). I feel like this movie had a lot of passion it was just hidden by Sony. The filmmakers clearly had passion. Andrew Garfield loves this character and the whole cast wanted to make something great. Marc Webb loves making movies and I can see in the director’s commentary and videos that he wanted to make something fresh and wonderful. Sony on the other hand had this made for the soul purpose of keeping the rights. That’s probably why I personally believe they (by they of course I mean Avi Arad) cut over 20 minutes of this movie out. That’s it’s biggest problem. Sony’s interference. It’s not so overbearing and thankfully I think they left the hung what is still a good movie, but they shouldn’t have cut so much out either way. I think Dr. Connors is a very underrated villain. He’s a man who wants a world without weakness and a world with people who are equal. I don’t think it’s so bad he turns the world into Lizards. It’s of course horrible, but it makes sense for his character. He wanted a world without weakness and overtime as he grows more and more insane he realized the best way for everyone to be without weakness and strong is to turn them all into lizards. I think this was better conveyed in the deleted scenes since there we see more of Connors. It was done well enough to where I understood and felt it in the movie but Sony stop cutting SK much out of your director’s movies. It’s a movie that tries to be very emotionally realistic. Not completely realistic because the villain is a giant lizard, but emotionally. Gwen Stacy is by far the best love interest out of the 3. She’s a character who wants to be more in this world in a way. Someone who feels like she can do more to help people and tries to. That’s why she’s constantly trying to actually help Peter. Like Peter she wants to help the people. She can’t do it with powers but she can help Peter. I’d give it an 8/10, #ReleaseTheWebbCut. It’s my personal favorite though that’s very biased.

13:38 They gave Peter's parents a stupid backstory in the comics too where they were spies who were killed by a Communist who impersonated The Red Skull who was later killed himself by Johann Schmidt the real Red Skull. I don't know why because Peter's parents aren't important. His aunt and uncle raised him and it takes away from Peter being a normal guy who eventually becomes a hero if his parents were badass spies or genius scientists. It's why I don't like the "Richard Parker encoded his DNA onto the radioactive spiders so only Peter would get powers if he was bitten by one of them" thing in the 2nd film. Peter being bitten by the spider and getting the powers is supposed to be something that could have happened to anyone and it was him it happened to and he chose to become a hero to atone for not stopping the robber that killed Ben. The Amazing films having Peter be the only one who can get the powers and basically being destined to have them ruins that. I prefer heroes who choose to be heroes. "Destined chosen one" heroes are cliche to me.

I prefer the changes in this movie, besides the untold story bit. I much prefer Garfield to Tobey because he feels more like the Spider-Man I grew up with rather the the goofier Raimi one. That's not to say I hate the Raimi trilogy as their quality is obviously overall better, but in terms of the character, I much prefer Garfield.

I like this movie. But the Raimi movies just had magic and charm that the movies following just didn't seem to capture. I thought every character was a downgrade from their Raimi counterpart, except for Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. Not to say that the actors and actresses in this movie are bad, but I just don't think they're as good, from Spiderman/Peter Parker to Harry to Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Also the Amazing Spiderman films are not nearly as quotable or meme-worthy like the Raimi films. The first Amaxing Spiderman though is definitely better than its sequel.

I like the idea of exploring Peter's parents however this film feels weak story-wise because of the fact it repeats so much of the original movie's origin story. The big problem I have with this one is it repeats the origin story nearly the same exact way as for the movie itself the film is fine it's better than Spiderman 3 but not 1 or 2. Far as Lizard goes the same thing he's better than the villains of 3 but not 1 or 2 him turning people into Lizards is what he always does in the comics so I don't mind it however the problem I have is nothing was done with it he should have had a Lizard army. Honestly, I thought Gwen Stacy just chemistry-wise alone was a huge step up from anything Mary Jane in that trilogy.

12:25 Spider-Man's had some dark storylines but on the whole he's a very light hearted character so the dark tone of these films didn't fit. Just like how the dark tone of the early DCEU films didn't fit Superman or Flash and not only did it not fit the characters it didn't fit the story either.

I will say this The Amazing Spider-Man movie isn’t my favorite of the 7 Spider-Man movies of the last 20 years I do feel Andrew’s version played the emotional side of Peter very good. As decent as this movie is and as much as they pulled from The Dark Knight trilogy in terms of tone Andrew as Spider-Man is great. The witty one liners, fighting like an actual spider, and the web slinging is great(probably the best). But, maybe for me both Sony’s versions didn’t work for me is because of the MCU hype. But this is a generous 6/10

I’m gonna have to disagree with Cody here. As a millennial myself I grew up with the Tobey Spider-Man movies but as an adult I see their flaws and problems . I think a lot of millennials hold onto the nostalgia of those films and don’t objectively critique them. The amazing Spider-Man films were not perfect either but still very enjoyable . Also I’m shocked Cody didn’t mention that the Garfield movies have the BEST spidey suits of all the movies . And finally I think the Holland movies meets a medium that has fixed mostly everything of what was wrong with the previous installments although I don’t think any of them are bad movies .

To me, Mark Webs first Amazing Spider-Man movie was just...meh. Enjoyed seeing it at theaters when I was in middle school but as I grew up, I became more and more distant from it and learned to appreciate the original trilogy much more. Andrew Garfield's take on the wall-crawler is great as Spider-man but as Peter Parker...eh? This isn't Peter Parker to me, this is "What if Marty McFly was Spider-man!!!"
