This is a product review on these American Optical Eyewear sunglasses I purchased. So I bought these because I saw Tom Cruise in Oblivion, and thought, that's a bit of me that is.
Sadly the ones Tom Cruise wears in Oblivion are Randolph Engineering so I have bought these in error.
Still I want to review these and give you an idea.
Can be bought here..

(I may have said American Optics in the video, my apologies, it's American Optical).

I'm completely obsessed with Aviators but I haven't branched off from Ray Ban yet. And the reason why is I can only imagine how big my addiction would get and I haven't gotten all the Ray Bans I want anyway yet. I just love the idea of wearing the brand too that supposedly (I understand that it was Bausch and Lomb) was responsible for the first aviators.

Read the history of American Optical (AO) aviators and you won't ever want to wear Ray Ban again.

AO are great. Just be aware they are quite heavy.

Thanks Daniel, I didn't think these were particularly heavy but they do feel heavier than the Vuarnet's for sure

You probably have glass lenses. AO's can be had with either glass or nylon (plastic) lenses - the plastic will of course be lighter in weight.

So was it originally ray ban and they switch to Randolph? Or originally Ray ban, then AO, then Randolph? Or what?

From all accounts it was Randolph Engineering that Tom Cruise wore in this movie to the Empire State Building

Fun fact about American Optical (not Optics as you keep calling them…) is that they were the first sunglasses that went to the moon, as they were Standard NASA astronaut issue, one of them at display in the Smithsonian from the Apollo 11 mission, and until 1989 they were also standard USA-army issue, together with an other American icon, the Zippo lighter. What you are wearing is actually a historical item that has been recognizable all over the world. RE glasses are actually a rip off, and AO tried to stop RE from making it. Myself I own a pair American Optical’s that my father bought in 1957 in the US, still looking quite good after all these years. Hang on to them, you will get a lot of envying stares along your path.

@@harm7602vicount-Visconti Most head to head reviews I’ve seen indicate Randolph is a definite step up from AO quality wise

@@BC08 sure, but if you compare quality and price you’re much better of with AO. And call me oldfashioned; My dad bought his first pair in 1969 in the States, just before the actual landing and I still have his in my car. Okay, the bajonet temple-pieces are a little green here and there, but they are 53+ years old. And still the lenses are immaculate. For the (then) price off $29,95 it was a steal…

@@harm7602vicount-Visconti AO has gone up in price quite a bit recently. A polarized glass AO Original Pilot is $259 now compared to $319 for a polarized glass Randolph Aviator. The thing is Randolph is providing a higher quality product (per most), making everything in-house in the USA (except nose pads) and are providing a lifetime warranty with a generous repair program so the price is justified, IMO. AO is importing most/all of their parts and putting them together in the US these days from what I understand. You can’t go wrong with either one as they’re both way better than Ray-Ban but American Optics isn’t quite the bargain compared to Randolph like it used to be, IMHO.
