I was hoping for another Lovecraft Country. Forgive me for sounding like a colorist, but why choose the lightest black man AND have go into a interracial relationship? This feels like a bait and switch movie for me.

The whole "Magical Negro" trope is about a throwaway magical black character that helps a white protagonist. What I'm seeing from the "satirical" element in this movie is portraying the trope as a negative role black folks have to play in society to maintain their safety from whites, and a secret society established to maintain that social order. There is no joke there, it's entirely racial commentary. The jokes come purely from the racial tension established by that premise. The romance story is grafted on as a way to create conflict with, and after all overcome that role. Seems like a poor attempt at satire that devolved into a generic romcom. Also, the premise comes across as racist toward white AND black people at the same time without being funny(which is almost impressive). Overall this looks like it sucks. I don't understand who this movie's audience is, and I don't think the writer/director knows either.

The magical negro falling for what "appears" to be a white woman kinda disappointed me. Not sure I'm interested in the film. TBH this trailer just took all the wind out of my sales sadly.

Pass, it's still a story about how a Black man falls for a white woman... I'm as burnt out on the Black man/ man of color with white partner version of an interracial relationship as I am with a straight white couple.

The female lead actress looks mixed to me especially from some other pictures Her name is also An-Li So she seems to be mixed The male lead is definitely mixed race though So it's two biracial people falling in love Not a black and white woman on the strictest sense

I'm not shocked at what the movie is about but from the title I was expecting a more dark and depressing story but I like that there's some levity to it. The focus on the romance story feels like the thing we have to worry about taking up too much space and drowning out the story. I'm definitely gonna watch it because the tone of this movie feels more entertaining than American Fiction will be.

I am sorry, but if you are a black film buff or like movies at all and you hear that title, there is no way black harry potter should have come to mind. It clearly a satire on the magical negro movie trope. The way how this fly over some black folks head on tiktok is annoying. they keep burying themselves in ignorance

even as a black film enthusiast, i understand the film trope but I am still not sold on this movie. They had the opportunity to either make a satire with good social commentary or make a positive spin on a tired trope while making good commentary, but they failed to doing either. It feels more like wasted potential to me. Based on the trailer, the first half of the movie could have been something good. It caught my attention but then the love story of the second half completely hijacked the story and ruined it. How are you going to have the society that serves white people, but it doesn’t actually have any astronomical benefit to you? In fact, it’s actually detrimental. That doesn’t make any sense.

I'm excited for it! It looks like something different then anything we have gotten in a RomCom movie. I had no idea Justice Smith was openly gay! It would have been nice if this could have been a gay romance.

The fact that every speaking part in this trailer is code-switched is absolutely hilarious to me. I wonder which parts they're using a dirty-south regional dialect. They clearly hate wp but the protagonist is light with a perfect Orange County accent, chasing an ambiguously mixed W woman. Good stuff lol. Absolute cringe. Absolute cringe victim-mentality pap. Funny they didn't use a strong, jacked man for the lead, but instead opted for the frail Urkel type.
