Friendship between former Enemies, especially Americans and Germans was very common after WW2. I know that out of first hand experience as a German who grew up with a whole Family of WW2 Veterans from the Waffen-SS (not Allgemeine SS) to the Wehrmacht, Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe. I grew up in a Town with a US Military Base and my Relatives often had their former American "Enemies" over for BBQ in the Summer. Those were usually American WW2 Vets who decided to stay in Germany after being stationed here. Often moving their Wives (and in some cases also Kids) over here. To this day one of my Grandfathers who was a Wehrmacht and later Waffen-SS Soldier and fought Americans in the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennenoffensive) is alive, he turned 100 on the 2nd September. Only one of those former American "Enemies" and now Friends is still alive at 98. They don't meet much anymore for obvious Reasons, but they're still Friends

Quite happy my family didn’t turn out like this.. my Great Grandpa was pretty much ethnic German minus the fact he was born in America, his parents were both fully German.. in ‘41 he joined the U.S. Army to join the infantry, but during boot-camp he was hurt because another trainee had fallen on top of him. He spent a few weeks in the hospital and recovering due to him tearing something.. once he returned they had to cut him because the unit was full with 32 men.. and he was one of the 5 cut off because of his weeks in hospital and his last name started with Z.. so he joined the Army Air Corps.. he flew in the European Theatre of the war, and returned home safely where he had my Nana in the late 50’s.. RIP Grandpa.

But likewise, Catholic Irish, the Polish, and the Chinese were treated very badly prior to WW1. In fact, the German Immigrates had it fair more easyer time, immigrating to America, since most were protestant, and had a working culture. It was only during the first World War, that Germans were treated badly of the first time. Plus, many did fear that German Americans would riot, and revolt against America for going to war against Germany. I can't blame them if they wanted to defend there ancastral land from, the Soviets. But America was there adopted Country, and they fought against there fellow country man. If that's not traitorous, then I don't know what is.

One of my elderly friends (passed away several years ago) was a forward artillery observer under Patton's army. He was apparently really good at snatching prisoners, and often got that job. He told me one time he grabbed a German soldier around the time of the Bulge......got him back to their rear area and started talking to him.....turns out he was from Wisconsin, about an hour or two from our town here in NE Iowa. Same deal as mentioned here- the parents packed up and moved to Germany in 39'. He spoke perfect english, graduated from high school in Wisconsin, and moved with the family. After the war and spending time in an American POW camp, the guy from Wisconsin moved back here and he and my old friend became lifelong friends. My older friend met a german girl at the end of the war and he brought her home after they did their hitch occupying Germany after the war. Super neat people, got to meet them all at the VFW as a kid going to meetings with my dad.

My grandparents emigrated from Germany to the US in the mid-30s. When the US joined the war my grandfather was drafted and sent to Africa to fight. When it came to invade Italy they sent him home because he was a full blooded German and the Army didn't want to cause an incident (someone thinking he's a spy, him defecting to the other side, etc) so they sent him home.

Bruno Friesen was a Canadian who fought for Germany during WW2. His family were ethnic Germans, and as a youth he was sent to Germany for a better life. Once he became of age, Bruno was drafted into the army and served on the Eastern front during the war. After the war Bruno returned to Canada. His book, Panzer Gunner is an interesting read.

Here is something for you all. My dad was 1st generation German/American. He served in the U.S. Navy in WW2 and served the Pacific. One of his great uncles served in the Afrika Korps. My mom was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada and 1 of her uncles was in the Canadian army and landed on Juno Beach during D Day.
