To your point Matt, the fact that he murdered the whole family with a shotgun and no one woke up is part of the mystery of the actual Amityville murders. This is one of the facts that has made them so famous and strange and seemingly paranormal in the first place. There were some other weird details, but this was the main one.
@NinjaDimes4 жыл бұрын
@@Lamenter40K There's evidence that some did wake though. They just were groggy and barely moved. www.amityvillefaq.com/.com explains this well, and it backs up its info with sources. It's not sensationalist, unlike some of the other 'resources' out there. EDIT: That is to say, its not sensationalist like some other sites that claim the sister or mom was involved etc. It does seem to believe the Lutz family, though personally I'm not sure about the Lutzes.

@@dylanwheelhouse9932 If you follow the citation on the wiki, it brings you to a NYT article that says that the Police theorized that he may have used a sedative, since they thought it was weird they didn't wake. But it says nothing about them actually finding sedatives at all. In fact I believe toxicology showed there weren't any in their system. But there is evidence that some of them were waking or rousing at the time.

When talking about the "real world horror" that is baked into this story, Craig mentions the fear of being thrust into this family and having to change in unexpected ways (a fear from the film's male POV) but I think the inverse is also very present: the fear of becoming trapped with an abusive husband (a fear from the film's female POV). I think looking at that angle kind of explains the question that is so often raised "Why after all these red flags, did they not just leave!?" Well, for the same reason many people stay in abusive relationships.

I saw this movie when it came out in the summer of 1979. I was seven years old. We had just moved and the new house was a two-story house directly across the street from a cemetery that had an old stone fence and iron gate. My bedroom was the only one upstairs and no air conditioning. The first weekend we were in the house after unpacking my parents decided to treat us by taking the family out for dinner and a movie. This was the movie. Needless to say, it scarred me for life. I don't know why my parents thought this would be anything but traumatic. I couldn't sleep upstairs by myself for about three weeks. My room was extremely hot but I was not about to put my hand anywhere near a window. I still remember those shotgun blasts, the red eyes, the bloody staircase and the glowing basement wall. Our house wasn't haunted but it was...unusual. In addition to being cemetery-adjacent it was about half a mile from a park that had a small zoo. Peacocks would caw randomly and they were so loud they sounded like they were right outside your window. Their noise would in turn set off the coyotes which would howl at each other with snarls and barks. Their barking would in turn set off the neighborhood dogs for a few rounds and it was unsettling. We had a few acres of densely wooded area right behind our house and I learned that when strong winds blow, trees make noise - creaking, groaning, scraping. It was spooky. Looking back now I loved living there. I quickly got used to the wildlife and nature noises, made friends and having a park, zoo, and forest all within walking distance was an non-stop adventure for a boy back then. I got used to the cemetery across the street as well - the "unoccupied" section of the cemetery was a great spot for tag football or flying kites. Good times.

I have mixed feelings about movies like this, tangentially based on true events that then invents a supernatural element. I feel like it's in bad taste and kind of disrespectful to people that actually died. This one is mostly fine because the actual deaths are mostly glossed over at the start, but there are some pretty egregious examples like The Haunting of Sharon Tate. I mean imagine your entire family was killed by some psycho and they make a movie about it where it's ghosts or some ridiculous nonsense like that, I'd be beside myself.
@meteorrejector4 жыл бұрын
yeah i agree, especially about the haunting of sharon tate. amityville horror maybe isn’t quite the same because the family did claim to experience a haunting while sharon never did, but the exaggeration still makes it kind of morally dubious.

The sequel is even worse. In Amityville 2 they depict Ronald DeFeo as being involved in an incestuos relationship with his sister. How can you get more disrespectful than that.

This is phone etiquette that I did not learn as a child, but I think instinctively if you're just calling to talk to your friend, I let it ring probably 5 or 6 times. If I needed to contact someone for important reasons, I'd call and let ring - and hang up and call and let ring.
