The Anbernic RG40XXV seems to take everything Anbernic has learned over the last 10 months and craft it into a nearly perfect budget handheld. This retro gaming console is SO CLOSE to being my budget retro handheld pick of 2024, but there are one and a half things that hold it back.

I think a lot of people don’t realize how much bigger that 4 inch screen looks over a 3.5 inch screen. Once I started using my 405M with the four inch screen, it was hard to go back to 3.5.

It is weird! Because I can switch between my 3.5 and 2.8 inch screen devices no problem. But going from 4 to 3.5 feels like a huge step down. I wonder why that is.

I will stick with my favorite handheld the RG-28XX which is the first one ive purchased that is perfect in all aspects software/hardware. I have been collecting these handhelds since 2019s PocketGo 2 and even owning the RG-Cube to play my PS2/Gamecube games I find myself playing more with the 28 which plays N64 & PSP games perfectly. Setting frame skipping to 1 allows the PSP to play smoothly without any noticable frameskipping. The 28 has buttons that are closer together to also act as a secondary digital direction pad for the 1st person shooters such as N64 goldenEye or one of the many Quake mod ports included within the device. When I first got my hands on the 28 I set the L/R buttons for strafe left/right with mouse look disabled but little did I know that it is best for the digital pad to control walking/strafing with the buttons on the right for looking/turning which works beautifully

Oh and Dreamcast works amazingly smooth on the 28 and play these games when showing off the device along with PSP. Parasite Eve 3rd birthday looks so amazing on the small but hi-rez screen

Good video dude, visuals look awesome. Imwith you on how tedious the H700 chipset devices have become. At least the software seems to be improving and they got that dpad right. Analog stick snapping is a bit dissapointing though. Also can;t figure out why they didn't implement a fix on this if it is sorted on trhe 406V. Maybe they are too busy churning out new units, lol. Hopefully they will release a software fix soon. It does look really awesome though.

It’s a lot of fun. It would be an easy recommendation if the stick was better. Maybe next year. 😂 I still think it’s one of their best looking devices. Yeah, the 406 looks like a pretty great improvement over the 405. Also, I messaged you on X. 😂

I don't like vertical devices. This is the reason why I bought the RG35XX-H because it's still pocketable. And I think it is a good thing that we have soo many opitions for the same performance. If you don't like small screen but want the vertical form factor the 40XX-H is your device. If you want clamshell the 35XX-SP is made for you and for ultra pocketability the 28XX is also an opition.

I think all of the different H700 handhelds are cool in their own way. I the the 35XX H might still be my top budget recommendation of the year because it strikes such a good balance. But when you have 7 devices that all do the same thing they just seem to become less and less intriguing with each release. Glad we got some 4” screens in the budget category though. Still the best budget device. Especially after the initial price drops as it's no longer the new kid around the block. Maybe RP2S could surpass it but that one's probably still more expensive.

They’re definitely good enough for a budget friendly device like this. But there is just not much left to talk about when you get the seventh device that does the same thing as the first one. If you’re looking for a budget device under $100 with great sticks, there’s not much there. Most of them have issues like this. One that doesn’t is the Retroid Pocket 2S. It’s a little older, but still good, and the sticks are excellent.

Ambernic must be addressing that thumbstick, I've watched about 10 reviews from heavy hitters in the retro space and they all say give it a miss as the stick is trash

It’s not complete trash. The problem is more recognizable in some games compared to others. It just functions like an 8-way arcade stick. And that’s great for arcade emulation, but bad for everything else. Thanks for watching my review too!

I find it interesting that you consider it one of the best looking devices. I think it is one of if not the worst looking. I'm not a fan of asymmetrical designs. Having one lousy analog stick sticking out of the bottom looks absolutely horrendous to me.

Anbernic is stupid....how come they can't see that people want the rg35xx plus in big size fits adult human size who is the only one who Interested in this device because lets face it .. gen Z does not interested with the retro gaming so just make a big one to fit our hands

@@amarramoul4027 you’re half right. There are a lot of people who want a larger 35XX, like a 40XX (no stick). But I’ve talked to several Gen Z kids who are very interested in retro gaming. They’ve figured out the games are fun. In fact, just about a week ago I ran into a 15 year old in public who was playing the original Fire Emblem on his phone via emulation. He said he was loving it! 9:18 I think it's crazy they haven't fixed the joystick cardinal snapping. It takes the purchase decision from an easy yes, to a hard no. I don't get it.

I should have said in the video, that the one reason it makes sense is that this plays a lot of old Arcade games, and those often use 8 directional joysticks. But for everything else it makes playing more difficult. So, I agree, I wish they'd fix that. They were SO CLOSE!!

@@BoKnowsGaming I've just tried Knulli and it doesn't fix the cardinal snapping. So it is a software issue and it is fixable, but I'm not sure if any current CFW actually fixes it yet. Hope that clarifies!

@@GreenTeaViewer the upcoming version of muOS apparently fixes it. I don't really find it a problem anyway, it's perfectly fine for arcade emulation - you only really start to notice it's limitations when you try to play a game that's more sensitive like Goldeneye on the N64. If you're mostly playing older consoles and arcade stuff it's great.
