Hi really good job. This is the only channel that shares research based knowledge instead of pseudo science. However, I was taken aback that you did not include Bhoot Chaturdashi that is celebrated since antiquity in Bengal regions. It falls exactly one day before kali puja ( kali puja falls one day before deepavali). I would love to see this vital piece of research included in your video. Bhoot Chaturdashi is the day when it is believed that evil spirits visit earth and people light fourteen diyas to ward off the spirits. Please look into this. I am from one small south Slavic country in Europe and I started learning sanskrit recently with incredible realization that I could count till five within minutes as some words and roots are identical, I always knew that Slavic languages belong to Indo-European group but I didn't know it would help me learn and easily pronounce ancient language used for oldest text records in the world. I love how everything is deeply connected and I also noticed similarity with ancestor worship, even my family 50 years ago would keep portion of food for dead, and light a lamp in front of house even though Christianity had its influence for 1000 years here. It's hard to miss how everything came from one source

I'm from Spain. In the region of Catalunya we celebrate la castanyada (the chestnut party) on the same date as halloween. Children dress like old people, people cook chestnuts and sweets made of almonds and pine nuts and sing songs about la castanyera (the archetype of the chestnut seller). She is a stereotypical old traditional woman that comes from the forest with her harvest when the weather gets cold. Cailleach was a celtic goddess that looked like an old woman and came to earth during each autumn and winter. In the songs you can hear that la castanyera had a cat but it died because a chestnut exploted when it was cooking, so maybe she is related to witches or missfortune. The castanyera, being a chestnut seller, looks similar to Dhumavati because chestnut shops produce smoke, they are metalic, small and on wheels, because they are not permanent.

As always a profound lecture and thank you for that. On one specific point you are not correct. The Great Famine of Ireland is not as we were told. It was a British operation stealing all agricultural products from the Irish. The Irish were not stupid people, that only lived from potatoes. They had a whole variety of products. Around 200.000 British soldiers participated in the years of the famine and put an iron ring around the country. Ships with cargoes of farm products sailed as a pendulum back and forth from the island daily. The result was of course a hunger catastrophe. It was a combined plunder operation and genocide. The mass graves are scattered to this day around the landscape of Ireland at a distance of 2 km. Old people know this dark story but keep their mouths shut. The reason why you as an Indian should know this, is - which you most certainly know - that the British did exactly the same to you but in a much larger scale. We are talking about hundreds of millions that died! And what the world only learned lately is, that they did the same to the Iranians during the Great Famine of Iran 1917-19. It was yet another plunder + genocide, where all transport of food from the productive region of Iran to the most populated region was blocked. Half of the Iranian population starved to death. Some would say: Oh, but we were not taught that in the school, and the history books ... all the usual stuff. There is a reason for that. Not many people know about Operation Legacy. When the British Empire had to abandon their colonies in the 1950'ies, they send their people out to make sure, that all records and archives were destroyed. These archives contained all the dark evidence of the enormous misdeeds of the Empire, that the World was not supposed to know about. As an Indian you will be able to confirm this, because the archives in Delhi were the first to go. For a whole week a huge pillar of black smoke rose to the sky over Delhi. In Cairo it was told, that the ground around the British head quarter was covered in an ankle deep layer of ashes. In the islands of the Caribbean, they dumped hundreds of crates of papers in the deepest place of the ocean. Very few archives were preserved and hidden away. The archives of Kenya were flown out of the country in 1962 in 300 crates and locked up in a facility in Buckinghamshire. They broke their own law of the right to public access to government papers and made them classified for 50 years thus making sure, that no-one could be held accountable. But this is only one out of a huge amount of document that survived. The whole history of the British Empire has to be radically rewritten - and thereby world history. Including the official version of the Great Famine of Ireland.

The practice of Halloween continues to be attacked by Christians even today with the creation of competing "Fall Festivals" held at churches which seek to further erase the old traditions. When I was a child we went door to in our neighborhood to receive homemade sweets, nuts, coins and fruits from neighbors. Now this tradition of community building and visiting neighbors is being replaced with going to church or the "Trunk or Treat" events in parking lots where you give out candy from your car. Today overall it is much more commercial. My mother made all of my costumes often using old clothes or fabric scraps. This year over 75 percent of the kids I gave candy to did not even wear a costume. I give prewrapped candy because people are too scared of neighbors these days to take homemade food or sweets. Very sad!

In Odisha, Deepavali(Odia:Deepā-bali) is an occasion of ancestor worship. Odia hindus burn jute sticks, called Kauriya Kathi and chant prayers to guide the souls of their ancestors to heaven who are believed to have descended on earth during Pitr-paksh. Many gather at the entrance gate of Jagannath Temple at Puri for this unique ritual. In the Indian state of Kerala during the month of Karka(Sun in the Cancer) and Thula(Sun in the Libra) on new moon day/Amavasi, there is a ritual of doing Pithru Tharppan (remembering and offering food to the dead ancestors), this is also called Vavu Bali Tharppan. Lots of Stonehenges and Dolmens in different shapes are also still present in Kerala. Ancient india influenced the world, there is no doubt about it.

I watched an English anime movie (I don't remember the name) with one of my friends, in the filming of Halloween, the parents offer food to great grand fathers, on that day, But the main character in the film, he will be waiting for their grand parents, they don't come, struck somewhere and this child go and save them, they enjoy later on, celebrations finishes and his grand parents leave the grand children's home and movie ends. Then we discussed that, the concept is same as pitru paksha, were astonished how cultures are related together. We finished the discussion like World runs alike, we people without understanding will fight among ourselves. We felt in many instances that, culture of Bharat has few similarities with native European culture, another example being, saying god bless you with good health (Gute gesundheit) (we sit for a minute ofcourse) when someone sneezes, Germans and French people follow that, most of the Europeans follow it as per my knowledge. That's the reason we were told to wait for few seconds of time before doing any bodily activity to support our body to come back to normal state. Nevertheless the heart and lung functionality comes back to normal but waiting especially while travelling (body is already in motion of inertia or about to pick up inertia but not idle) seems to be an additional safety measure we give to ourself, not only that, this practice of taking care of our body helps us in long run if we are doing this practice consciously. I feel it's a tradition with underneath practical reason behind but not superstition, it's just my personal opinion

My wife still having habits from India makes food that I offer to the crows as representations of my ancestors, so has been very informative to see connections to the pitru Devatas, beautiful research. One flower was a favorite to grow due to its resilience, I learnt its name was Dianthus which is connected to Dios, similar to Dyaus, beautiful how subtle changes in sounds are like differences in English across the UK where same word sounds totally different in North and South, were certain sounds are extended or shortened similar to Gujarati sounds I make and neighbouring regions taking different forms, yet are same language but appear different to the untrained ear. What we call culture is a set of strong habits that seem to continue as an expression through generations, gratitude being a beautiful one that strengthens the connections between life and the root cause of it, all that came before this one.

I was just wondering how much similarities are there in Halloween and North Gujarat tradition on deeewali of "Mer Merayu". Children are given torches made from half shell of dry coconut 🥥 and a stick through it. Children go from house to house in neighbourhood and ask for ghee or tel teasing the ladies of the house.

In Bihar there's a festival called 'Jitiya' in which mothers do nirjala fast for the well being of there childrens. This festival is celebrated during pitripaksha in which they worship our pitra.

We Bengali Hindus don't light diyas to worship the souls of our 14 ancestors... We light diyas to honour them and guide their souls home during the chaturthi! At the night of amavasya of Kali chaturthi the realm between the earth and the spiritual realm weakens and hence the souls come closer to the mortal world! In Bengal, the evening before Diwali, known as Dipanwita Amavasya, marks the observance of Bhoot Chaturdashi. According to tradition, on this day, the spirits of fourteen ancestors from the afterlife descend upon their ancestral homes. To guide them, families light lamps in the evening, illuminating their path. There are alternative legends surrounding this festival. One narrative tells of Goddess Chamunda arriving with an entourage of ghosts on this auspicious tithi (lunar day). Another account attributes the presence of ghosts to demon king Bali, who is said to have brought them with him. The lighting of fourteen lamps is believed to possess spiritual significance, vanquishing malevolent forces worldwide. Additionally, the day's customs include consuming fourteen varieties of leafy greens.

Pitru Paksha today comes in September. 2160 years ago, Pitru Paksha was coming in October. 3500 years ago, Pitru Paksha was coming in late October - early November. As per your comparison, Halloween matched the timing of Pitru Paksha during that period. Halloween remained at the end of october because they followed only solar calender.

I'm from Delhi, while my ancestors were from Rajasthan and Northe most MP (modern day relatives are from there too), we do celebrate pitrapaksh and shraddh, my parents taught me about it when I was young and i also found out just last year that slavic people had similar fest but on halloween then I researched it and learned all about it, im glad to see a video that educated other Indians about it too, amazing video as always!!!

After hearing Shantanu's harsh words, the woman revealed herself to be the goddess Ganga and justified her actions and narrated the following story. Once the celestial Vasus and their wives were enjoying themselves in the forest when the wife of Dyu spotted an excellent cow and asked her husband to steal it. The cow was Nandini, daughter of the wish-fulfilling cow Surabhi, and was owned by the sage Vashishtha. With the help of his brothers, Dyu tried to steal it but Vashishtha caught them and cursed them to be born as mortals and suffer a miserable life. Upon their pleading, Vashishta showed mercy and told the other seven Vasus that they will be liberated soon after their birth. However, Dyu being the protagonist of the theft was cursed to endure a longer life on the earth. Before the birth of her sons, Ganga was requested to kill the seven children soon after their birth. Hearing this, Shantanu was filled with grief and regrets and Ganga decided to abandon him as her condition was broken. Before disappearing, she promised Shantanu to return his heir.
