Exactly! I think that has a lot to do with Chise herself. She isn’t the overly energetic, bombastic main character we’re used to seeing who reacts to every minor strange thing by screaming ‘NANI?!???!?!?’. She’s very calm and even a little melancholy. She automatically accepts the things she sees like the forces of nature they are and lets herself just go with the flow. And, like you said, it’s extremely refreshing.

A few thoughts I have on the Stockholmesque relationship of our duo. I think that when Elias said he wanted to make Chise his bride, he didn't mean that he was going to groom her to be his bride. I truly believe the only thing he planned to teach her or to influence her about, was magic. We learn later in that Elias lacks some essential humanity, and that his intentions in taking in Chise was to see if he could learn these emotions and empathize with people. Essentially, he will teach Chise magic, if Chise will teach him humanity. His saying that he intends to make her his bride is just his way of stating his intention, as having won Chise's love would be a sign that he's gained that humanity. As well, even though Chise is pretty dependent on Elias right now, Elias has always treated her like her choices matter. She has the option to leave, and Elias always speaks of their marriage as more of a hope than a certainty. Once Chise is a capable mage, she could leave and make her own money.
@KryssLaBryn5 жыл бұрын
***SPOILERS*** As of like Chapter 56 in the Manga (which is after Ep 24 of the anime, which did touch briefly on this too), poor Elias *still* doesn't have a clue what a "bride" is. So far as he's been given to understand, your spouse is basically family that isn't related by blood. And a "family" is a group of people drawn together by mutual dependence. And that's it. And since he wanted to explore a "family" from the inside, but didn't have a way to make someone be related to to him by blood... "Bride," it is. The guy is completely oblivious to any romantic or sexual implications to the term--and no one has ever felt comfortable explaining any of the nuances between "bride" and "roommate" to him, because his emotional intelligence is so stunted that everyone feels like it would be like explaining sex to a toddler, which makes it all too awkward. Chapter 52 of the manga, pages 26-28 are Rahab explaining to Chise what she told Elias, back when he lived with her, trying to figure humans out. mangarock.com/manga/mrs-serie-156929/chapter/mrs-chapter-100384741

one of the smallest details i noticed was in an episode where we saw the contents of Elias' fridge i saw the milk was soy milk, and i wondered why soy milk was in a typical brittish fridge until i remembered that Chise is Japanese and more than likely lactose intollerant and that maybe Elias or Silky bothered to replace their normal milk when she came. that is such a small detail to include!

A girlfriend is a Lovecraftian entity upon which you project your own version of your ideal female soulmate and then get disappointed as she starts showing her true colours, showing increasingly human problems and emotional baggage with every single interaction until you realize that you were better off as a single who had to look after his own human needs. The same goes for it's male counterpart, the 'boyfriend'. At least, that's what I've inferred with my years of research on human relationships. (This comment is not to be taken seriously, obviously)

I've read a lot of comments, and a majority of people say they love this series. However, I also see people who think the show is "boring" and "slow." Personally, please let me address that I actually disagree and think this show is perfectly paced. It's not the type of show where the is a lot of action and battles (Hunter X Hunter and AOT for example). It is a show of emotional growth. People keep saying that they hate that Chise is so negative, but you have to understand that she was ostracized in her childhood and even tried to commit suicide. Do you really think that she will automatically change in just a few episodes and pretend nothing in her childhood ever happened? As I'm watching the show, I'm seeing that Chise is changing gradually, not automatically like a lot of people want. She is slowly changing after her many encounters with creatures such as Nevin and Ruth. This is why I also am quite a little annoyed when people trash My Hero Academia for Midoriya not automatically controlling his power. What other people call "slow pacing" is actually quite fine to me. I consider slow pacing when the characters, plot, or anything for that matter do not progress for more than half a show (depends of episode count). But if we're only talking about a few episodes and people already dropping the show, I just find them a little impatient. Please note that all of this is just my personal opinion, so don't get all keyboard warrior on me. Edit: I'm seriously thinking that no one saw the last part of "this is just my personal opinion." Don't get all angry just because I disagree, and if you are going to disagree, use a valid point and argument instead of insulting me. I don't care if you dropped this show, neither do I care if you think it's boring. People have different tastes, and that is fine with me, but if you're going to insult me just for liking a show then I say that you're awfully immature. And when I say "perfectly paced" I do not think it is the goddamn best in the world like some of you think I have. I just think that it is amazing, but there are a lot of shows that have better pacing.

Random Alien because its not the focus. I hate how the show kinda focused on "she's the magus' bride" and them going for a honeymoon when none of those pretty much happens. Yes you can see some affection from time to time but I would define it more like a child attached to her mother kind of a feeling. Elias is very much unexperience to feeling something and he just thought that making Chise as his bride would lead him to study humans emotions more with Chise. For me their relationship is like mother and child, with Chise as the one who teaches Elias about humans and Elias teaching Chise about the World of Magic. The grow attached to each other but I don't really see it as anything that much romantic. It's more like a puppy love for both of them and it's cute to watch them grow.

If you think the show is perfectly paced watch last week's episode (8th ep). If you still think it's "perfectly paced" you have some kind of bipolar disorder mixed with time-dilitation brain fuck up. IMO last episode was made up of few episodes done by different teams and then cut togheder, propably coz of changes in schedule. But seriously, I would never used term "perfectly paced" in connection to this anime. OVA's were awesome, the anime series is average at best, some episodes (like the last one) are just shit-shows and basically in every episode the bitch looses her consciousness.
@zanthiablue52546 жыл бұрын
I think one of the main accomplishments of Magus Bride is how Chise's and the viewers perspective on Elias changes of throughout the series. He begins like this all knowing, terrifying, yet charismatic thing. But over time you realize that despite his age he is very immature emotionally and is only just beginning to understand how to recognize and describe his emotions. . While I still think the romance is... objectionable, the reason I don't see it as Elias being manipulative and evil is this very immaturity. I can also see why characters like Titania, the cats and Lindel don't object, since they either don't have the same idea of age as humans do or see both as children anyway. I have not read the manga and so I don't know how the relationship develops or if the problem is actually addressed in a substantial way, but the anime has managed to make me consider the possibility of a good romance there. (btw I agree with everything Gigguk says here I just had a lot to say on this)

The fact that this mangaka has been able to take old mythologies and put them in her story without blatantly slaughtering the lore makes this anime feel so genuine to me. Only recently have I begun learning of my ancestors and their pagan beliefs, but seeing something like this makes me feel that I'm not the only one with respect for the dead. (Not that I felt that way to begin with, but still.) And it also makes me laugh how hostile this magical world is towards the men of god, and in such a way to avoid being political about it. It makes me so happy that this show seems to respect the old world, rather than mock it or imitate it in a mediocre way. And above all, it captivates me, and leaves me truly wanting for the next episode. Both this and made in abyss have reignited my love for anime, and I hope it can do the same for all of you.

That actually really connects with me, because I once had a similar dream about a tree that left me in tears; it was somehow related to a tragic death and the bestowal of new life-it was almost as indistinguishably profound, in an utterly mysterious way. It bore some sort of deep, archetypal significance to me. I had that dream 8 years ago, but recounting it still brings me to tears. And I actually just happened to have publicly shared my dream yesterday for the first time ever...yet then, as if by sheer coincidence, this video comes out today. I'm intrigued by the synchronicity.

The world of ancient Magus bride is just explained enough for immersion, but vague enough for mystery and sets a fantastic scene for the moral and character questions that the Narrative is asking, can emotion be understood pragmatically? Elias is a changling that lacks any kind of deep emotion, but hopes in trying to save Chise he will come to understand it in a way that he can experience. Can comfort be found in something known to be false, and if so is that comfort real or just escapism? Chise sees Elias, Silva and Ruth as the first true family she has had but Elias outright tells her that he called her family because he knew that would draw her in, and that his true purpose for purchasing her was study and research, Chise doesn't care, she is willing to stay with Elias because even if his reasons are cold he does actually value her, the attitude of someone willing to sell them self to the highest bidder in order to find somewhere to belong shining through.

This really hit close to me. I had been trying to find a manga or anime or any form of media with magic which wasn't just 4 fundamental element and protagonist trying to become powerful or fight an overwhelmingly powerful foe. When I was a kid I watched Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone and it gave me this feeling of mystery, curiosity and an urge to imagine. I searched for magic in anime and this was 6th or 7th search result and I clicked on it just because it was uploaded by Gigguk. And whatever was described in this video was exactly what I wanted. I never comment on KZbin this is probably the 2nd time I'm doing this and it is worth it.

Problem with anime's attitude towards fantasy and the need to inspire the sense of mysticism is that many Japanese writers ironically have very narrow worldview. The modern world of internet makes it very easy to learn about countries and cultures from around the world from the fingertips of your phone, yet very little are making attempts to look them up, mostly out of fear of having to accept that they know very little of the world as a whole. Whenever I traveled, be it to the Mediterranean, Russia, China or Maldives, I ended up asking "this is much more beautiful and richer in culture than standard RPG world, why aren't more animes set in this, or why aren't there even any Isekais set in a world modeled after these locations?" It's a shame that despite examples like Mahou Tsukai no Yome, very little anime creators and fans will realize there's a far bigger world anime had yet to explore. Why is the standard Isekai RPG world so overused when Isekai means you can make a whole new world of your own? Why are almost all historical animes based in Sengoku? Why are almost all legendary/mythical names depicted in the way that seems like they are ripped off from Final Fantasy or Fate rather than being faithful? (You'll never see Bahamut depicted as a fish, and the chances you'll see King Arthur as a male is very small these days.) The answer boils down to the creators unwilling to look things up and expand their worldview, be it out of laziness or the fear of having to face the fact they've spent their entire lives in ignorance. Another thing that irks me is when something is somewhat "well researched", like modern Fate series(FGO, Apocrypha), Sin Nanatsu no Taizai or the plethora of other moefication anime and games, it all boils down not to "how can we educate ourselves and our audiences with these new cultures and mysticism" nor "how do we take these unique ideas and make them more compelling than our competitors"? But instead "how do we fit these themes into overused anime archetypes for the sake of turning them into fap fuel?" Even when they're trying to open up to the wider world, the anime media industry stumbles right back to its filthy tiny box.
@oboretaiwritingch.20777 жыл бұрын
First to clarify, I'm not mad. I'm making an argument and I like clarity. It baffles me how people immediately equates "long writing = mad". If it's tl;dr, don't reply. Don't start conversations you don't intend to carry. Now onto your point about animes being educational = full of myself. Because Mahou Tsukai no Yome isn't inspiring people to expand their knowledges right? Because someone wanting to learn more and sharing knowledge is bad and pretentious right? Or are you just justifying your own unwillingness to learn, just so you don't have to have your own ego be hurt with the truth that you don't know anything? I'm not saying "animes *MUST* be educational", animes are entertainment first and foremost but the thing is you can also grow and become smarter through entertainment. If it's both enjoyable and help you grow, that's the good thing, if not, then it's fine. "It's cartoon therefore its the opposite of education" is such a stupid notion. Please reread my argument before trying to draw false conclusions and accusations just to ironically defend your own ego.
@biazacha7 жыл бұрын
Imo the mentality that anime has to be "fun" and nothing else is the reason why the seasons are 95% isekai, ecchi and loli harem nowadays... when people don't expect something from the plot and looks, the industry gives nothing to them, cause that's cheaper and peope are gonna buy figures from their best girl anyway.

Well, this era is one of the best potential for anime to expand. As there are so many foreigners now working inside anime studio, it is inevitable that anime will be directed by foreigners too. Anime also started to cater for international audience too, as the dwindling population in Japan will cause a drop of profit if the studio only depend on Japan market solely. And inevitably, the center of anime also will transfer out of Japan when we look at current trend. Anime is a fairly 'new' media; animation based on culture, language and perception of Japanese. But will the meaning of anime change, it hard to be predicted. I believe anime will opened a new job market, which is never unheard before. Who can predict some random people make a review about anime can be popular and make a living out of it? And hello Reito Shizaki, just ignore the comments of some people. The comment given by them can't be said untrue, because anime cater almost every view, even the 'opposite of education'. I just don't want people to fall in the pit of world of anime in pitch dark which is still unknown, just like the Abyss in Made in Abyss. No one knows how expansive and deep is the 'anime' as a medium. Suddenly I feel to write this up when I see your comment, it is impulsive of me. Just explore the world of anime as you now as a tourist, but of course it's better if we became creator too in the anime world.
@synnell887 жыл бұрын
Anime still have a good hope, even in the hands of foreigners. Please refer to Canipa Effect's video about Anime Global Effect. It describes how foreigners were slowly accepted in studio's creative making and some drawing grind being outsourced outside Japan such as France, Vietnam and Philippines. And this is still in the infancy of anime popularity. US has started to promote anime through Netflix (for example), albeit with some obstacles (Death Note live-action movie debacles). Anime has slowly growing out of its shell of "animation created in Japan". There is a debate what is anime actually is, with some argue 'anime' is a shortcut of 'animeshon', which mean it is define the same as animation like Disney films. But the opposite argument is 'anime' is animation exclusively created by Japanese and for Japanese only. But in recent year, both argument became vague after the mixing of collaboration of Japan and US studio in some anime. 'Shelter' manage to break the shell of 'creative making by Japanese only' when Porter Robinson goes to Japan and collaborate with A1 Pictures. Of course, any popular or mainstream ideas will be used, attacked, and tested by some people with their own agenda. To ensure Anime still in a good hands even outside Japan, Anime needs foreign lawyers, composers, story writers, drawers, and even an entire studio crews to be rational and open-minded to any hidden motives. As I am now, I don't have any decent arts skill to help Anime, the only thing I can do is to buy the products such Blu-ray. I may contemplate to create website or open anime shop to enable people outside Japan to purchase those products, but for now it will be a failure if most of my own country people don't know anime yet and still have derogatory definition for it.

Well this is just the right opportunity. I'm actually trying to get into the Japanese light novel industry but due to being a foreigner the publishers aren't quite giving me a fair chance. So if it doesn't trouble you I'd like to get a sign for a petition just to show them the impact of anime community overseas. Share it if you want but don't feel obligated, every little bit helps. Further details on the page itself. www.change.org/p/kyoto-animation-please-support-my-entry-into-the-japanese-light-novel-industry

You know how to make magic interesting? ZERO EXPOSITION.
@LuizAlexPhoenix7 жыл бұрын
That is just laziness. "I wanna create a magic world but don't have the brain to think through all the consequences of it all. So, let me just add this magic magizmo and hope the fans will take it." The moment you change the laws of reality on a whim and can't give a shit to explain how or why that came to be, you are just not feeling like it.
@gavinerickson93927 жыл бұрын
Luiz Alex Phoenix It hurts the pacing, and is most often irrelevant to character development and does not add to the overall narrative. Exposition does nothing as a story telling device, though it might give a nerd an orgasm. It can work in a video game, but not in shows, and especially not in movies.
@Aska24687 жыл бұрын
It hurts the pacing if it's done incorrectly. There's nothing wrong with a little exposition. FMA Brotherhood had a short intro at the beginning of each episode and without the explanation of alchemy's basic principles, the show just wouldn't have worked as well as it did. If you're gonna make magic or any kind of mysterious power an element of your fictional world, you have to include some amount of exposition.

I love this anime and the manga. It really captures the feeling of fantasy and magic whilst still in a modern setting. It goes to show you do not need fast paced action, plot twists and any of that harem bullshit to depict a wonderful story. Yes it's a little slow, there is so much to establish in a world rich in folklore and legend. But in a way I appreciate that all the more. It's taking it's time. Like a fine aged wine. And it's gorgeous to look at sometimes I'm too busy looking at the elaborate world around the characters than focusing on what they're saying. The mangaka did a good job referencing British culture. And Elias is indearing.

It's fascinating that someone who, it seems like, never experienced childhood depression and abuse can take away such a different primary message from the anime. For me, the journey to overcome the scars of the past was this works core, its soul, its raison d'être. Others might primarily see an exploration of Western mythology, a vivid fantasy world. There is of course nothing wrong with that. In fact, the colourful fantasy world is a deliberate allegory to illustrate this journey, standing in to show how one rediscovers the beauty of existence.
