I had a day to myself around Cheshire when I took the car for a service so I ended up at the Anderton Boat Lift. It's a great little place with a cafe, visitor centre and of course the boat lift.
The Anderton Boat Lift is a working boat lift (there’s only two in the UK - the other being the Falkirk Wheel).
Built in 1875 to transfer boats between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal as there’s a height difference of about 50ft. It was operating for 100 years until it closed in 1983 due to corrosion. However the public fought to have it reopened with a massive campaign and trips to Downing Street. In 2001 campaigners raised over £403k to renovate the lift, and with a further grant of £3.3m being awarded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, it was open to the public again in 2002 after a huge renovation project.
