In some ways, seasons six, seven and eight of The Andy Griffith Show feel like a sequel series.

For all intents and purposes, it kinda was. Seasons 1-5 were basically all about Barney, and Andy standing back, letting Barney be Barney, and cleaning up when need be. Seasons 6-8 were all about rural small town life with rural small town people doing rural small town things at a rural small town pace, No crazy hijinks, no wacky adventures, just a small slice of Americana. The jump from B&W to color made it stand out that much more, as that is the most tangible dividing line. B&W = Barney, color = no Barney

This show completely jumped the shark b/c of color. No Barney, Gomer, and new characters who weren't as funny. Plus the b/w gave the show a nice "escape from reality" feeling that people needed at the time.

The character of Gomer (Jim Nabors) had his own series by that point - _Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C._ - that lasted five seasons (1964-69), while Barney (Don Knotts) was reduced to a supporting character.

If the show had gone to color in season 5 when Don was still there, none of you would be pissing and moaning.

I wouldn't say it's because of COLOR. TAGS had gone on too long by season 6 and Don Knotts called it quits after his 5 season contract, coincidentally right after the 1964-1965 season in which several prominent tv shows switched to color film. By 1966 many of these long running b&w shows had lost their touch and were getting old/looking for new formats. It's just that by the time tv went to color the tv classics that were still on were on their way out and were mere shells of the shows they were in their b&w heydays (Gunsmoke and Andy Griffith are PRIME examples)

The color episodes introduced us to Grumpy Andy. He was grumpy and irritable in these episodes and he spoke more with a Northern accent.

leahblashful Yes, but it (Andy and Helen's wedding) wasn't on this show but rather the first episode of the spin-off series, Mayberry R.F.D.

Does anyone know if there is an episode with Andy and Helen getting married? I know there was a special called Return to Mayberry (or something like that) where Barney and Thelma Lou finally get married .( She had been married before)

That took place in the first episode of "MAYBERRY R.F.D." {September 23, 1968}.

I wonder if the last season of the series in black and white (season 5, 1964-65), in syndication, just used this colored intro desaturated to monochrome a la the more recent prints of the first two seasons of _Bewitched,_ which in that case also just used the color intro made into monochrome?
