Love this! This game's animation is just gorgeous, it's nice to see it broken down like this. What's really clever about character design here is that the player character's dress allows her to be a mostly square shape, filling a square hit box, while also allowing her to be, as you point out, very slender and delicate. If she was just very, very thin, without the flowing dress, it would be harder to see her animation at all, and to keep track of her movement on the screen. There's a reason why (most) 2D platformer go for squatter, shorter characters that appear chunkier on the screen. This approach means the game can have its cake and eat it too, with a realistically proportioned player character that also behaves like a stockier, chunkier, easily visible image on screen.

Wow. Just wow. When i played this i actually thought i might have cried. Gris has this perfect mix of gentleness and action, when your going through a peaceful section when boom! Giant Ink monster! But when this transition happens it doesn't take away from the peaceful feeling you've had up until this point. Also the use of subtext is performed wonderfully. This girl is going through something, she struggling to let go of something, and this Ink monster is some manifestation of whatever she's going through. Thats why at the end when she's consumed by the ink its the game telling us that's she accepted whatever happened and is ready to move on.

The game was on my backlog for an eternity, bough the collector's edition 2 days ago. Finished it in one night. Cried my eyes out because I lost my mother and crumbled away when i was a kid... depression physically disabled my ability to see colors for a while, brain was too shocked/fried to process stuff. My world was colorless and tasteless for a time and it took a lot to manage my depression. This game is an opera for the lost souls like us clinically depressive people. A work of art without words. Wished my insensitive dad could play it and UNDERSTAND IT. Yesterday was mother's day in my country.... timing is cruel and fateful. I guess it was meant to be that I would play this game specifically on this day. Waited to finish the game before watching your video. Its as always, awesome. this is the only game to ever make me cry. not only that, but just seeing certain scenes can make me cry, and I don't fuckin cry easily. the game doesn't even have to fully immerse you and rely on built up emotions throughout the gameplay to be such a strongly emotional scene, it can just show you one scene without much context (although knowing the context helps) and make you feel such complicated, beautiful yet sad emotions. it's my favorite game and I love everything about it

One really cool thing about her turning animation is that there are actually two different ones. One at the very start of the game where she turns away from the player and one a little bit later on where she actually turns toward the player. The first one is really easy to miss since you can get to the player facing one in about a minute and then you never see it again. It's a really cool piece of characterisation and character growth captured just through animation.

When the worst part of the game is the gameplay but you still enjoyed it, then the art had to carry the game. And - oh boy - the art is gorgeous. You feel how they took their time. Another game for my wishlist. The simplicity in this one works so beautiful that embodies the feelings it wants to portray and the harmony of the colors its really pleasant. It can be said the same about the animation which unifies everything on the screen. Simplicity can end up as lazy and uninteresting just like complexity can be unnecessary and overwhelming. It’s hard to find a balance, but really rewarding when one can accomplish it.

I'm not sure how much I'd trust it though. There isn't really a universal "sweet spot" because it varies by person. I believe how we perceive frame rates largely comes down to conditioning and experience. Someone acclimated to 30fps video will see that as smooth, but someone acclimated to 60fps video might see 30fps as stuttery. Acclimate to 144Hz, and 60Hz no longer looks as good. 24fps is "cinematic" because we've watched movies all our life at that speed. Heck, even experts can wildly disagree, where you might get one person saying the high end no longer being able to distinguish animation from real life movement is around 200fps, another might say 120fps, and still another might say that anything more than 24fps is functionally irrelevant.

Gris was, for me, an exquisitely beautiful experience, but a terribly basic/mundane game. I think in this instance the presentation is absolutely the sole entry ticket, because the gameplay feels barebones and simplistic. No I get that, and it is an incredibly short and basic game, relatively speaking to other games of this genre. It's aesthetics are definitely the highlight, and sometimes that's okay. But for those looking for more in a game, they're probably more suited to Journey or Limbo.

@@VideoGameAnimationStudy No, it didn't but it was just an observation. Your videos never take me out unless it actually ends. Good work with the production!

Hey Dan. I'm looking to start 2D animation that isn't pixel art, and I'd like to know what would be a good program to do 2D animation.
@VideoGameAnimationStudy6 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Depending on budget, Adobe Animate is a good place to start, Toon Boom is probably the best, although I'm not sure what a free/cheap alternative is.

I am not an animator, but I looked into this a bit. It seems like there isn't a free, open source program that is competitive with commercial apps and suitable for a beginner. There are a few tools that let you draw new stuff frame by frame, sometimes with layers. Pencil 2D, for example. It is very limited, but if you just want the basics, then those could be a choice. But animation is already complex enough, so having proper tools to learn it is a big deal. Blender has some simple 2D and drawing tools, but they're a small side feature of a 3D modeling and animation package. It might be an optuon if you're a 3D modeler looking into ways to combine 3D and 2D, but not for just doing 2D animations. Krita is a free painting program with rudimentary animation support - you can draw frames and then play them. Krita has vector tools, but can't animate vectors, so it's digitally hand-drawn and painted stuff only. Gimp has no proper animation tools.. it can convert layers into gifs, but that's not anywhere near enough. Synfig tries to be a paperdoll animation tool, but the UI is super weird and the tutorials didn't feel very good. Dan's suggestions should be good. If you can't buy those tools yet, you could try something like Pencil 2D, or just practice drawing. Lots of the difference between pixel and non-pixel animation is in drawing in the additional details. Muscles, drapery and clothing, expressions... Good luck, hopefully you can find something that suits you!

Just bit the bullet and bought a Cintiq. What are the best programs for sprite animation for it? And animation in general? Great vid Dan
@VideoGameAnimationStudy6 жыл бұрын
Wow, good going! I've heard Stencyl is good for sprite animation. I use Adobe Animate for character stuff but generally ToonBoom Harmony is one of the top ones out there for character animation. I use Adobe After Effects for my motion graphics stuff, which is standard everywhere.
