The Reddit communities are alright if you just look at the smaller subs dedicated to specific series. Some of the better ones will allow more off topic stuff like recommendations and stuff. He's not that wrong. The movie community can be really toxic. I barely remember a movie discussion where people weren't jumping at each other for opinions. And Joey's right about the "more mainstream = more toxic" take. The bigger a fanbase, the more shitty people it attracts. EDIT: Didn't know this comment blew up this much, so I wanna add some more points to this: I am aware that something being bigger doesn't equal more toxic people being attracted to said thing. What I meant with that point is that when something is more popular and bigger, more and more groups of people are attracted to that thing, meaning that it is easier to stumble upon toxic people. If you're a filmbro, please, don't take this as an attack. I love having great discussions about movies (and everything else for that matter), but sadly a lot of the discussions I've been a part of/witnessed have been just people being toxic.

I don't think the size of the fanbase is the singular reason for toxicity. Movie fans these days have it rough, with Hollywood consistently putting out shitters for the last 7 years or so. I feel like that if anime fans constantly had to deal with Berserk 2016 level adaptations of their favorite IPs, while being told that not liking them makes you [insert negative adjective], then they'd probably also get pretty toxic when someone praises an adaptation they hate with a passion.

I also think it's because movie fans tend to be analytical (they usually like analyzing the movies they enjoy), so when someone criticizes a movie they like, they feel like it's a criticism about them personally. So they get really personal, nasty, and they try to analyze everything about you, to say why your opinion is wrong. Most gamers and anime fans are analytical, but not to the point that movie buffs are

Anime in general still has this lingering stigma as being weird, even amongst broader nerd culture, so I imagine a lot of the audience would've come in with that notion on the onset. So it's not surprising that the fans that stick around are more often than not, willing to poke fun at themselves, since almost everyone was an outsider looking in at one point. While Joey is right, the bigger the franchise the more toxic the fans, there’s more nuance to it. The size thing is less “popular things attract shitty people” and more that your metaphorical fish net is bigger. Even in small communities there are wackos and elitists who ruin things for everyone else. It’s just harder for outsiders to find them and go, “wow, that fandom’s toxic!” There’s also the idea of fandom-hopping and the types of people various media IPs attract. A lot of the fandoms that get clowned on attract immature audiences. Rick and Morty, Undertale, Steven Universe, easily accessible newer anime like MHA or AoT, etc. These are fans that don’t know how to politely agree to disagree or simply ignore content they don’t like. So, like kids, they’ll pitch a fit while talking about how mature their favorite IP is. Or they’ll engage in a lot of black-and-white thinking about topics/opinions. Or they’ll take someone trolling as some kind of personal attack, etc. It’s not _just_ kids, there are definitely immature adults who act the same way, but I tend to notice this a lot because I was a teen in fandoms who’s now growing up and realizing how dumb it all was. Tumblr was the original toxic fansite. But when that turned to shit ALL those immature shitbags + elitists turned to twitter and reddit.

Yeah, not really. If you go to a recent clip of Charlie talking about the new Bleach season for example, he complains about a few choices made in the anime that he wished were changed from the manga. If you go into the comments, the number of fans getting upset and defensive over what is a very minor criticism is insane. When something reaches a certain point of popularity, fans can get rabid.

The thing about starting One Piece now is a really interesting conversation. The mangá, being as old as it is now, should almost be treated as "period pieces" by new readers, in order to enjoy them. Because, yeah, they aver over 20 YEARS OLD. That's a very solid take. I think the Anime producer recognize that, and that's why we got the "Episode of X" series of movies (Episode of East Blue, Episode of Arabasta). It's not perfect but it is a way to "catch up" potential new watchers. What would be REALLY interesting is seeing early one piece Anime getting the "Dragon Ball Kai" treatment. Jusrt redoing early one piece but trying to fix PAcing isses and the such. Call it "One Piece: Romance Dawn" and the orginal fans are gonna go CRAZY. =p

Tbf, even before the Internet/social media in general, most toxicity still kinda existed among old fandoms/communities and subcultures, it just took different forms when the toxicity is more in-person. For example, most circles of Goth and/or alternative subcultures used to be way more exclusionary due to gatekeeping and stereotypes amongst the communities before the Internet/social media helped bring more people into the subculture, without feeling like an outcast among other. As a Goth myself that has listened to the music and wears the fashion associated with most of the subculture, I would've had a harder time being a member of the community back then compared to now if I didn't do something that fit with being Goth of the time, but with the help of the current technologies we have now, other variations of the subculture have been able to organically come about without people being as exclusionary to each other as they used to be (at least from my experience).

I relate to the One piece thing of loving the late point of something so much, you forget the issues with the start. Had a buddy that heard me and a friend talking about rewatching Naruto shippuden and he was like "Oh yeah I wanna get into Naruto." and then he's a chunk of episodes in like "what the hell is this?" and I was confused until I went back into the timeline and was like... Oh yeah... Og Naruto was 200 episodes with about 40 good ones. I was like "Why don't I just tell you the story beats and then you go watch the fights when we get there?" Even now when I rewatch Naruto. It's like Zabuza, half the chunnin exams, Save sasuke arc, ok now shippuden.

The latest one is Avatar 2 people complain that filmmakers have no passion or are too political and yet JC is making his passion work cause he likes it but people still want to bitch about like it is so bland and unorginal story or it is too expensive i mean really? 90% of films these days have a copy paste story from some other work. well with one piece its fine, i think the ones that are not biased would say the start is pretty meh, clearly everything is subjective for some ppl it got good at the beginning while for other was later on. In my experience it started it slow, but i really liked arlong park, from the storytelling, how everything was build up for that moment, namis backstory, the walk to arlong park with overtaken ost while zoros buddies tell the village abt certain men, that was when i was like damn i think this show is good. Then it was good but anything great imo, alabasta had its highs but i doubt ill rewatch it cuz there are arcs that i liked more. Then i reach water 7/ennies lobby and FOR ME oda took it to another level and since then ive been hooked to one piece, obviously there has been better arcs than others, obviously in the good arcs there has been some meh episodes but overall ive thoroughly enjoyed the show. Once again obviously this is my subjective take, since we are different and have things we like more than other things. We value different elements in a show, so if you didnt like it thats fine.

Even as a huge one piece fan I wouldn't recommend watching the anime at least until you get to wano when it actually looks good, I still have issues with how the anime is paced sometimes but it's much better than everything before wano, generally if someone wants to get into one piece I just tell them to read it, you get through it much faster and it's a overall better experience.

The only times the anime really dropped the production quality wise was Dressrosa and maybe punk hazard. Everything is really solid especially everything from Davy back fight all the way to marineford. I think the artstyle they used for those arcs really carried everything.
@Jordie_422 жыл бұрын
Hot take but I cant stand the Wano animation. The colour saturation is way to bright, they use the shaky cam technique in action scenes, a lot of the times you can't tell what is going on in the action because a lot of it has too many close up shots and the frames feel like they they are going at 12 per second to show how fast they are fighting, the ki aura look that they added was a dumb decision and I'm glad they are getting rid of that after the Wano anime, it looks like the magic effects from Black Clover and that's not a good sign. I'd prefer Dressrosa or anything pre dating Whole cake Island in fact. At first glance it looks good but has way too many problems when you keep watching on. Also why would you want to start the anime here after reading the manga? Wano is the slowest it has ever been. Wano anime has about 40 eps to. The raid itself is gonna be more than 100 eps
@goldmemberpb2 жыл бұрын
@@Jordie_42 Hard disagree on that. I do agree that some of the actions are almost too dynamic at times but you know the show's got a good production if it allows the animators to flex. Wano is meant to be very colorful and the saturation changes so much between episode to episode anyway. So, it never really bothered me. The Wano artstyle is one of the best artstyle the series has ever had. The animation has never been so free in all of one piece. Basically the staff seems to be allowed to showcase their own style of animation and it keeps us surprised on what to expect from the arc.

Gaming is mainstream for millennials and Zoomers only, male dominated space still etc Anime is bigger than its ever been, but still a niche weirdo interest that mostly attracts younger audiences. And thats exactly what alot of MC like Ichigo and Naruto lacks for different reasons even though they probably more interesting characters just in vacuum
@orangehokage72 жыл бұрын
I would say it's his lack of change that is actually important in the story. It's easy to make a character change in a story and make that change engaging. But making a character that doesn't change engaging and interesting is a much more difficult task. Luffy is himself; he won't change for anyone, not even the author. And it doesn't matter what you throw at him, or what bad things happen to him; he will not change himself. The story of One Piece is all about how one person can change the world, not how the world changes a person.

Luffy is very goal oriented and not easily distracted, so it's easy to root for him despite being essentially a walking meathead with ZERO growth as a person.
