These franchises make the most from merch, and Hello Kitty has such a cute, simple & timeless design that you can plaster it into anything, and people will buy it. I think Connor is underestimating the power of cuteness. People are drawn to cuteness for many reasons, but one reason is because it gives them a sense of comfort. Humans like comfort, lol. You can say the same with Mickey Mouse. He's not like the most beloved disney character nor relevant as a character anymore, but he's more so the mascot and just like hello kitty, his design is cute, timeless and simple. That's enough to sell merch, which is where they make the most money. Hello Kitty also doesn't just work for kids stuff, the design & color can work for high fashion as well. I can't say the same for pikachu/pokemon. Hello Kitty design is a lot more versatile because it's so simple, timeless and cute.

Something else worth noting here is that "Profit = Income - Cost" (i mean it's way more complicated than that but you get my point), and Sanrio basically spends nothing on Hello Kitty. They only make some (relatively) low-budget anime within their own company, and honestly that's kind of it. Their income from licensing rights and merch royalties is insane. I still remember when my city got its first McDonalds back in the 90s, and they had a limited-run HK plushy Happy Meal campaign. That was the only time in my city's history when we had people camping in tents overnight to queue for the next-day releases. Sanrio didn't even have to do jack shit, McD made the plushies themselves and paid Sanrio for the chance to do it.

Especially in East Asia and South East Asia you guys understand how big the population of China by itself, now if you add entire EA and SEA. agree and everywhere outside of (S)EA as well. Few little girls anywhere have never owned a hello kitty merchandise item. If I think about which anime character my little nieces from algeria might know, it's definitely hello kitty. And if little kids are obsessed with hello kitty, their parents will know about it too. Hello kitty has an 'easy' name compared to naruto, goku or pikachu. I'm sure if I showed my 53 y/o mum a picture of pikachu she wouldn't know his name, whereas hello kitty, definitely. Hello kitty is also more lowkey. It has an anime, but it's not necessary to watch or anything to be a 'fan'

Attack of Titan used to be one, but now... 5:15 One Piece is another good contender, is just had the soccer effect too, very ignored in the anglosphere from what I´ve heard. 5:50 Even with its downfall Bleach was part of the Titans of Shonen Anime, so of course there still have a legion of fans. 9:35 It used to be popular in Spain, I don´t know if other spanish speaking countries had it too, but yeah. @@SwifferTWetJetMop I’m not ready sure either but like every person I’ve shown a pic of doraemon to recognized him. I get what you’re saying though:). Btw it did air in the US on Disney 😊

I think that Super Saiyan Goku is way more recognizable than base form Goku. Super Saiyan Goku is in all the merchandise and video game cover arts. When I first saw base from Goku, I thought that he was a different character.
