The anti-drone gun giving Ukraine an advantage over Russia

Since the war in Ukraine started, the EDM4S (Electronic Drone Mitigation System) has been a key component in targeting Russian drones.
The anti-drone gun is a point-and-shoot electromagnetic pulse weapon that handles like a standard infantry rifle.
By jamming communication signals it forces drones to either fall, return to base or make an emergency landing.

That's a bit old now. And these drones are too high and big for that to be easy because the wind causes a degree of problems on the net. This should work 100% of the time. What the boys need to remember is that there could be drones with nerve agents or polonium isotopes, so when retrieving them you need someone in a biohazard suite and a protected van to take them back to the lab.

True, but at that time we used a radio spectrometer to determine the specific frequency controlling the UAV, rather than a band of frequencies. Then a directional antenna would broadcast white noise on that frequency to disrupt the controller. Things evolve. The man pack version today required a trailer load of toys just two generation ago. Mostly, we used the stuff to track and disrupt what are now called antique radio controlled aircraft. Of course, nearly everything I worked with probably belongs in a museum.

This is just a consumer grade DJI drone jammer. Consumer DJI drones are mostly unencrypted and use glorified WIFI for control and so are highly susceptible to jamming and potentially even hijacking. Actual military drones use directional radios or lasers pointed upwards at satellites for control. Not only will they ignore signals from the ground, they won't even detect them. Devices like this were developed for use by airport security and similar groups since DJI has a near monopoly on the off the shelf drone market, and so a DJI specific jammer makes sense for preventing John Doe from flying over a stadium or blocking the runway at an airport. Most drone detection systems work the same way, they just watch for the unencrypted info transmitted by DJI consumer drones. Of course, in war, you use whatever tools you can get your hands on. From what I can tell both sides are heavily using consumer grade drones off of amazon as frontline equipment. They are absolutely better than nothing, but it doesn't take a whole lot to defeat them either. But once again, they are relatively cheap and plentiful, so they can be treated as being highly expendable.

On top of this, this just stops active signals. If a drone is programmed to do something, it will do it. With or without comms back to home base. A simple program could get a drone to do a task

@@MoonLiteNite Indeed, I have a DJI Mini 3 Pro and if it loses signal for a few seconds, it will will just auto return to where it took off from provided it still has GPS. If it loses that too, then I'm not sure, it may just land where it's at. GPS is hilariously easy to jam, so I suspect a GPS jammer is part of this system.

@GrendalTheBeasty
@GrendalTheBeasty Жыл бұрын
@@RockapeandRolla They don't need to follow it. DJI drones openly broadcast their takeoff location and the controller's location too if the controller has GPS. Both sides have had to work around this, I've seen videos of Ukrainian drone operators running around towns in circles while flying their consumer drones to avoid getting hit by Russian artillery, I'm sure the Russians using these are doing the same. Simply put, these drones spy on both where the camera is pointing and also the operator. All of it is broadcast over the open airwaves unencrypted for anyone in range to see. DJI is a very pro mass surveillance company :D

What about using a drone as an anti-drone weapon. This could use a hydrogen filled attachment to lower the weight so it could float and listen for incoming drones. Using three or more you could triangulate on incoming drones. Being high above the battlefield will lower the noise from the ground, and using suitable filters, and spectrum information quite a bit of information could be acquired.

Just detecting drones is almost impossible. They're too small for radar, too cold for heat seeking, and too quiet for sound. The thing about drones no one tells you is that they can do the job of a $10 million dollar aircraft and $2 million worth of pilot training for $1,000 or less. This device that's "giving Ukraine an edge" costs more than 10 drones, but you have to be close and have direct line of sight for it to work. Meanwhile, drones can drop bombs on you from hundreds or even thousands of feet in the air and you'll never even know they were there.

While it does jam GPS and GLONASS, it looks like it's aimed at consumer drones with 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz. It may be less effective against a proper military drone using a different communications band. However, it would need some inertial navigation ability.

@Billy I read the description of how it works. It hits the drone with 10watts of power on those 4 bands. That's going to blind most any receiver that uses those bands, but if the drone used (for example) the amateur 440MHz, it may not have any effect. All measure/counter measures are a cat-and-mouse game with constant changes to defeat changing tactics by the enemy. This is no different.

It does not appear to be an EMP. It sounds like just a pinpoint radio signal jammer, relying on the drone using whatever fallback programming it has for when it loses connection with it's operator. Some drones just fail and fall down, some return to home base, others just automatically land. Yes, likely the jamming unit has a relatively short range, good enough for slow moving drones, not really useful against aircraft.

I have thought it do be a net gun, shooting projectile that on contact releases a net or some sticky material incapacitating the drone. Also i would expect therefor auto selfdestruct becoming an option so the equipment would not fall into enemies hand whereby i am unsure on how to differentiate between being jamed or loosing for other reasons shortly contact to the drone.

Many of the drones used in this war are cheap and meant for civilians, not losing too much technology if they fall into enemy hands, though I believe they can easily be reused by enemy, not worth the extra effort to add self destruct feature.

The implications of this are far reaching and seem likely to set off a race similar to that of the armor vs armor penetrating weapons race around tanks. Other commenters have already noted the implications for commercial airline traffic, fighters, etc etc.
@Maniac742
@Maniac742 4 ай бұрын
Unless there's a breakthrough in metallurgy, armor piercing will always outpace armor. Even tanks today are extremely vulnerable. A man portable weapon that costs 1/10 of what a tank costs can bring one down, and that was before the drone age. Now, a weapon that costs 1/100 or even 1/1000 of a tank can bring one down. Drones have changed warfare in ways no one thought possible.

They are a huge help to guide artillery onto targets and can drop mortars from larger drones Russia need to import drones from Iran and use the Russian satellite glonas system witch is known to not be accurate as jets use the same crappy system. Dji drones are actually a force multiplier and help the Ukrainian army also bayraktar bight land in Ukraine to jointly build bayraytb2 drones and America with the lend lease act are giving even more weapons and help Americans gave British and Russian army against Germany in ww2 with the same act . Russia are not the big boogeymen everyone first thought. Their combative power has shown to be a bluff at best and rotten line of corruption from the top down. I doubt they're using this bulky clumsy short-range niche thing as a field anti-missile defense. They certainly aren't deploying it in squads and equipping it on tanks or vehicles. But it is a way to quietly neutralize recon drones and surveillance devices, to disrupt wireless network and communication hardware. To protect sensitive areas. To invade sensitive areas.

The governments are the ones who are bad, the people in those county's (if there's a war or nuclear explosion) have to suffer even if they did noting which sucks as heck for them, nukes, military AI or such things are too dangerous towards humanity but scientists don't care and do such things, instead for wars what would be better is that the president/person sending orders goes to a big camp (nobody is around and is VERY FAR from normal people and from there it's a 1v1 In that camp, no large weapons allowed such as nuclear nukes and such things
