The Ants Have Found My Nepenthes Alata

My terrarium has very high humidity and artificial light. I keep the temps very moderate, in the 65-75 degree range. I mostly keep Highland Nepenthes. Lowlanders prefer warmer temps overall. There's a lot of info on the net about setting up terrariums. Good luck!

Yeah, walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot usually have some as Yong said, for 5 dollars. Lowes usually has flytraps, sundews, and pitcher plants, as for the others I couldn't tell you

The same thing happened to my Nepenthes sanguinea. Ants made a home in it. Just spray some water on the peristome and they will slip right into the pitcher.

That's moss on top of regular Nepethes mix. The moss grows faster than the Nepenthes!

Regular old fluorescent grow lights....very lo-tech.

I don't believe it is, sphagnum isn't usualy that thin and fluffy. I would say sheet moss, or terrarium moss (not sure of the real name atm)

It's huge! It has started to vine so it has taken over my terrarium. I'll try to post a new youtube movie this week to update the growth.

I had one of them but it died! I hope to get a new one soon. I also have a sundew, venus fly trap and a carnivorous plant that uses water to drown insects.

how the nepenthes now i got one yesterday if u want more to fall in get ur finger, dip it in to water and coat the peristome with it it works like a charm

Realben, what are the conditions of your terrarium? i.e. What sort of lighting (direction, natural or artificial, etc), what level of humidity, and which species have you had success with under these conditions? I'm working on getting a large tank transformed into a terrarium, and hopefully later a vivarium. Any help would be great.

they don't hurt your plant? ants partly ruined my venus fly trap... mostly because of the dead bugs inside the trap, they found the bugs and swarmed it, which blackend my leaves and taps and then they died...

hehe same happens to my sarracenia leucophylla ants want to "eat" her they get pwned by her nectar smell and after hours of "fighting" I find all of them drowing inside of her in big "antballs" :D
