He has to balance winning games with developing players. Cohen Carr dominated in HS because of his tremendous athletic skills, but he’s not a very good basketball player imo. Booker is a good enough player but so physically weak. They’ll be fine but if they’d have played too much more MSU might have a couple of more losses.

I’m a Spartan alum who watched damn near every game on TV from middle school on, and was a loyal Izzone member. It’s not just since Cassius left in ‘20. Tom hasn’t been able to win the big games for over a decade. His game plan in that loss to Syracuse in 2018 was inexcusable. Putting a lottery pick in Jaren on the bench in favor of Ben Carter? Same thing in 2016 against Middle Tennessee with Deyonta. We win the best game of Izzo’s coaching career by beating Zion and Duke, then go lay an egg against Texas Tech, with only Virginia-a team we’d owned in the tourney-standing in the way of a natty. Oh how about the loss to UCONN in the elite 8 in ‘14? I idolized this man as a kid, but he’s stuck in 2005 coaching wise, and refuses to adapt.
@abcdefg545911 ай бұрын
It's a lot easier to criticize those decisions at home without knowing why he went with it in the first place. For one, maybe Jackson didn't play much because of him getting a foul every 5 minutes and going 0-4 on shooting and having a turnover?

Finally! Thank you as I’ve been telling my friends for 3-4 years now about this. They say he’s a Hall of Famer and been to 8 Final Fours. That’s the last. . I was done this year after the first couple of games. Ranked 4 and they have underdelivered. I’m so tired of hearing his excuses in his press conferences such as we as the coaches need to do better, it’s on us, pick on us not the players, playing on the road is hard in this conference, etc. If I had made all the excuses he has like not doing my job or having to do better in my job as a teacher, I would have been fired. He makes about $7 million and players make NIL money now. The expectation is high and losing what should be winnable games is not. No excuses and just do. Not the same since the last Final Four. You have to know when to retire. I did. He’s a great guy but just not meeting expectations.

My expectation is not a championship. If you are told you have a top 5 team, and you aren’t performing at that level, then stop making excuses. Look at Izzo several years ago. In his press conferences he would be brutal with his players and how crappy they played. Now, he makes excuses for them. He even says him and his coaching staff don’t do enough for getting the team ready when there’s a loss. When you make that much money, those aren’t valid excuses. I’m sorry but above average is not acceptable when you are one of the highest paid coaches in the NCAA. Why does Bill Self produce excellence year after year?

Tom Izzo has been the BEST thing to happen to MSU in my lifetime! IMO Izzo can coach for as long as he wants to and I will support him. Period! On the other hand I have watched...somewhere around 2-3 games in the past 2-3 years...because I just cannot stand to watch the utter incompetence.. I sucks the life out of me to watch each debacle.

How can you support him, but then only watch 2-3 games and be fed up with the product? Those things are not mutually exclusive. You either support Izzo and watch the games or you want someone different. They have been mediocre since 2020 and nothing has changed with the program since 2000.

I support Tom's Izzo to be the coach of Michigan State Basketball as long as he wants to. He has earned that support from me by being the Best thing to ever happen to MSU sports...and probably the best thing that ever happened to MSU in general. No matter how bad the team plays. Even some of these shaky teams have continued going to the NCAA Tourney. More than you can say for 99% of the schools in the NCAA.@@Yahtzee_09

Izzo's motivational technique of yelling and getting on a player has run its course. There's only so much you can squeeze out of screaming at someone until you have to actually teach basketball. Otherwise you hit a ceiling. Except for Draymond and a couple others, what MSU players have become standouts in the NBA over a couple of decades? He doesn't seem capable of molding players skills beyond just crushing for rebounds. That worked great before the transfer portal and staying all four years, but now it's more about collecting a team of standouts. I hate the transfer portal, too, but it's here to stay. You have to use it.

Aside from the portal Tom’s biggest problem is creating lineups and managing PT. Maybe the latter falls on the assistants but he’s the HC at the end of the day. This is D1 Big Ten basketball at a historically formidable NCAA team. Therefore no shits should be given in regards to seniority, put your best players on the court… period.

Sissoko has had one game (believe it was at Duke) that he was actually good. Unfortunately, he hasn’t developed any skills and still looks like Bambi out there. He should be nothing more than an energy bench guy who gives you 5-10 minutes of balls to the wall play a night.

Hoggard… I had high hopes for AJ this season after the March run last year and his offseason. For whatever reason he just seems to lack aggressiveness at times when he can easily bully almost any 1/2 guarding him. Honestly, I think the biggest problem is the lack of floor spacing due to Hall & Sissoko/Cooper
