The Apex one button automated water change

Updated video with a walk-thru of my Apex one button automated water change system. I use this system to both remove water to the drain and pump fresh saltwater back into the reef aquarium system. This is done using a Apex 2016, the Neptune Auto Top Off Kit, and two Practical Multipurpose Utility Pumps (PMUP). The Neptune Apex Code is included if you would like to use this programming yourself.

Wow. Great Informative video. I am setup to use a DOS for my water changes but with the problems I am having with air getting in those and dosing not happening, proving to be unreliable. I was looking for an alternative and perhaps using pmup pumps. I would not know how to do all the programming. And I found you and this video. I am subscribed. Thankyou. Now I can get this setup. Then look into why I am getting air in my DOS lines. I currently have 3 DOS units. Thanks for this. So Happy.

Great tutorial. This is on my future todo list. I was debating using a DOS vs the PMUP.

When I was debating that I thought the DOS was to expensive and had better uses with its dosing accuracy. You can do water changes with floats and PMUPs and leave the heavy critical dosing operations to the DOS IMHO. That being said - a water change is easier with the DOS as far as programming.

I'm not worried about easy! just whats cleanest and most efficent.. Dual PMUPs (water out/water in) is likely the cheapest way to go

I assume you had to do some wire splicing and fish a power cable from your new saltwater pmup all the way back to your apex at the tank? I’ve been thinking about doing something like you did instead of using a DOS to avoid the noise and expense of a DOS but the DOS does seem simpler since it can theoretically pull the water at its location in the sump from the barrel in the other room.

It seems to me that a pmup can pull 30 gallons out in one hour. That will be too much with the return pump still running. And we want it to continue to run if relying on the optical sensor on the ATK to trigger the end of the water change. So how do you get around this.

Can you tell me please if I connect the two PMUP' to the TDK FMM module?

You can add a PMUP to a FMM but you must have the 24v power supply plugged in to the FMM also.

Couldn't you use a couple of inexpensive return pumps and optical sensors?

Yep you could. Same thing but at the time I really liked the pmups. It also saved a outlet on the eb832. I no longer do this tho.

Brother that’s brilliant but only a mathematician or an engineer can do something like that, is way t9 much information for me , am just a plumber, can sleep if I have t9 do that. But is a great idea on a super cool system. I think apex operations are infinitely, can do so many things when the proper mind is doing the setting. Am just use it for the basics for now maybe in couple years if I can get you to teach me private Neptune clases I will be able to do that. Thank you! Great info and great vid

You can do it! Trust me it didn't work the first time I attempted it. Took a lil work to get it to where I would trust it away from home.
