To anyone thinking about getting this: you can also just get the normal r70x on discount (please only get it on discount, at full price MSRP its not worth it and it regularly gets discounted). Then if the pads are too shallow for you get Brainwavz replacement pads which are quite a bit deeper and more comfy. Then just EQ them and they'll sound similar to, or better than this set while being more comfortable. All for a cheaper price and permanent availability, no limited time bs

@@badseedtech Thanks for the pin! I know its mostly just hearsay but I've seen a lot of chatter online about how switching the stock pads make the r70x more warm. I currently use them with the Brainwavz hybrid pads (velour/leather) and Oratory EQ preset (the preference setup listing from his document, not from AutoEQ) running balanced off a FiiO K11. I much prefer this setup to the stock tuning. The only problem is that there are (to my knowledge) no measurements on the r70x with different pads which really is a shame as it doesn't allow me to easily see what I could tweak.

Thanks to this video, and a couple of others because I love my research, I bought a pair of these last night. This is my first purchase of a pair of "real" HiFi headphones that I had been waiting to pull for a while now since I waiting for what seemed to be the right combination of comfort, quality, aesthetics, and the ability to be a great pair of gaming headphones while also be able to pull its own weight when it comes to music too. Since I'm just getting into this, I didn't but the balanced cable they were promoting along with it. However, I would love to see more DAC/AMP videos, maybe even using these headphones, where you breakdown more options when it comes to DACs, AMPs, balanced cables, what to look for in each, and how they all come together. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see what you put out next!

Welcome to the cult of the R70x, Brian. Seriously, I waited years before picking up a pair (the original, not the refine) and they became an instant favourite in my excessive headphone collection. I'd love to get my hands on some of the new pads found on the refine, the biggest complaint is how small the original pads are. They don't personally cause me any discomfort, but I'd never turn down a roomier pad if it can maintain a similar tuning.

Would I really need a DAC like the Gunnr for the R70x for it to sound as good or better than the maxwells?
@mhm352 ай бұрын
The Maxwells are closed back right? If so, diff experience. I bought mine for gaming and music listening during work. I listen to nearly every genre including some EDM here and there. They’re outstanding. They instantly became my favorite headphones (out of the six or so I had). The soundstage makes directionality so easy for gaming. That said, while I don’t have the Maxwells, I’ve read they’re great. If you want isolation, closed back will always meet that need for you more. I purchased a Fiio K11 DAC / Amplifier and ultimately returned it. My motherboard audio was sufficient for me to enjoy this headphone. I may circle back when I’m willing to spend more than $250 on DAC / Amp, but everything from my PC to my iPhone can get these cans plenty loud without any distortion my ears can pick up.

@@Artamon8371 at the end of the day it’s gonna depend on how the PC was built. I was fortunate that my MAINGEAR purchase did good isolation of each component so I’m not getting feedback over any of my AUX ports. But it runs a basic MSi Pro VDH-WiFi B550M board. Certainly not known to be a high end component. 😂 But it’s been great for me. I may circle back if I’m willing to spend $200-$500 on DAC / amplifier combo, but you definitely don’t need to get sucked into the bottomless hole that is audio equipment. I’m wearing these rn plugged into my iPhone, and besides being annoyed by a 6.5’ cable dangling from me, it’s fantastic.

If you listen to a lot of EDM, stick wit the Maxwells. Closed back is always better for EDM bc you're gonna have more bass - and sub-bass. Which is where all the action is on EDM. Movies also to a lesser extent. If you have the Maxwells, enjoy them.

@@Artamon8371 I guess badseedtech and I disagree but all good! Everyone enjoys their music differently. I’ve had nothing but open backs but enjoy these more than any I’ve had before for all my music. My PC has a MSi Pro VDH WiFi board. It def isn’t known for good audio but it’s good enough for me listening to Spotify. Regardless of whether you go Maxwell or these, try your existing setup first before you go buy more.

It's worth mentioning to everyone here that headphones don't benefit at all from balanced differential output. They have no independent ground so their current is always balanced between the driver and the amp. Balanced amps also have more distortion since you double your amplifier distortion and introduce new modes of distortion like ground imbalance between the two amps. You do get more power since you use two amps, but you'll always be better off with a single high quality and powerful amp without differential output. Most manufacturers know this but make differential headphones amps anyway because audiophiles don't know what they're talking about and insist on having stupid products with more boxes checked. Outliers like JDS labs and Benchmark don't make differential headphone amps and try to educate their customers about why it's counterproductive.

Good stuff. I have yet to hear anyone on the internet accurately explain what the point even is of running balanced. I'll have to get with the guys at JDS and see if we can put together a little video on the topic.
@Farengast2 ай бұрын
@@badseedtech It's the same old story with everything in the audiophile world. Recording studios use a certain thing for a specific reason that is important to what they do and not at all important to what a listener does and audiophiles assume they do it because "it's better" and then they demand it in products for no reason and companies oblige so they can sell products and then eventually one run-on sentence later well meaning consumers don't actually have any idea anymore because there's so many products proclaiming XYZ to appease people who never knew anything about it in the first place. Balanced headphone outs, high frequency and high bit depth files, jitter, etc. etc. Also worth noting that studio heaphone equipment is NEVER balanced differential. Studios use the old timey 6.3 jack for a reason. P.S. I would love to see a collab video with JDS labs about exactly this!

The last time you were this enthusiastic about a set of cans (Philips X2HR Fidelio), I immediately went out and bought it. Still use it to this day! ...I have a feeling the same is going to happen to me with these now. 😅 Only thing is I'm not entirely sure if my Dac/Amp (FiiO K5 Pro) would be able to run it 🤔
@zellfk2 ай бұрын
Just a heads up, got the original ATH-R70X and using the FiiO K5 Pro on mid gain I get good listening levels at around 9 o'clock so it should be fine with the refine version (as they both have the same 470Ω impedance)

@@zellfk Sweet, thanks! I was also thinking of getting that Magia cable and seeing how much potentially better that could make it. If I'm dropping $300 on a set of cans, what's another half a wallet for a fancy cable to go with it? :P

okay I have the r70x refines already since I bought them back at launch and I own a T1 Gen 2 which is very similar to the 1990s. If you want a more relaxed tune and better tonality and comfort then the r70x refine are for you. But the 1990/T1 have better detail, soundstage imo, faster bass (less bass than r70x R), and beyerdynamic parts like pads and headbands are easy to get compared to the r70s where you can't buy the pads

Maxwell is better *only* if you need wireless and you prefer closed back. If you're content with a wired setup and open back - this combo is better imo

Any chance you can recommend an AMP that can power 250 ohms?
@sephondranzer2 ай бұрын
That’s not enough information, you also need the sensitivity values of the cans. Most cans at that rating have reasonable power requirements but I can’t say for sure.

Oh puhh-lease, the HD6XX are great headphones, just use a bit of EQ. Smooth as butter and super natural and detailed. If you think they're muffled, you need to get your ears checked and/or properly cleaned. These were Sennheiser's top of the line cans until 2009 for a reason.
