The Arcanist: An ESO Game Changer? (My First Impressions)

Elder Scrolls Online: Shadow of Necrom is the 6th expansion of the game's lifecycle. With this expansion comes the new class: The Arcanist. As the 7th playable class for this MMO, it's inspired by daedric horror, tomes of magic, and Lovecraftian tentacle galore... giving Cuthulu a run for his money!
The Arcanist is a powerful new Class capable of destructive, restorative, or defensive magic by channeling the arcane, ancient runes, and lost tomes of power. They admit they didn't started coding new chapter yet. They are spending money on promo videos on something that even doesn't exist. Yesterday maintenance on EU server took 8 hours, then game crashed and tomorrow is another 6 hours maintenance. I tell you this. ESO game is dead. Cheap promises, lies, what they will introduce cost them nothing. I want to see REAL stuff. New hardware for PC EU. Code rework. Short maintenance times. Bug fixes, shielding fix for example. Smooth and balanced PVP. Not new prepurchase mount which is ... invisible because some lazy 3rd class coders from India were hired by MIcrosoft and don't have clue what are they doing and QA / testers don't exist at all. They are making the game worse and worse update after update and I don't care about empty words and promises anymore. This game sucks and everybody knows it. It is terrible game and nobody should pay for it unless they fix it all.

I think the game is what it is. A new class isn't going to change much. The people who enjoy it are already playing it and will enjoy the new class. Doubt it'll draw new people into ESO. Game will keep trucking along as it is now. Only thing that'll result in a huge influx is another big MMO shake up (like we saw with the Blizzard drama). MMO players are settled in. I've been enjoying both ESO and FFXIV since quitting WoW. Until something new and better comes along, I'm good to go.

We already had veteran Overland. It was called Cadwell gold. You know what it was like? There was only like a hundred of people on whole server on this veteran level. Because people in Cad Gold and usual people couldn't see each other, veteran players felt like the game is dead because there is only like 10 people in capital city of each faction. And it did a lot of harm. A lot of "Game is dead, no players at all" discussion on reddit, official forum and on MMO sites overall.

The game felt dead back then firstly because you couldn’t see other players from different factions in the over world and secondly because the game was a clusterfuck of bugs you had to literally line up single file one at a time to do certain quests. The game was so bug infested 90% of players quit the game I was there on day one, I got to vet level 10 when the game came out I remember the shitshow back then. Why would you not want a optional button that lets you make the game harder, you wouldn’t even have to play in vet if they implemented it properly. The game is just too damn easy.

They need on the first time deliver on the promises. Secondly they need to focus on QUALITY instead of QUANTITY. The ESO world is huge and boring and bugged, lagged and poorly maintained. PVP is poor and performance of the servers sucks. The community is great but everything has it boundaries (for example loyalty to ES lore) and enough was enough.

I just resubbed because of this expansion. I wasn't a fan of High Isle but loved the previous expansions. Unlike FF14 they don't have massive button bloat and unlike Wow it's not a carrot driven gear hunt. ESO has great graphics for an MMORPG, fun action combat, all the quests are voice acted and you have the ability to create custom chars designed around how you play. Considering how I'm prepping for the Arcanist class, I will level it to 50 pretty quickly then go back and do all the expansions and DLC's with a new char and fresh look. This will be a great year for ESO.

Yup, I haven't touched eso since u35, swapped to ffxiv. Still miss the feel of eso combat, nothing else like it. But yea that update was a snapping point for a ton in the pve community in general. That blocking and instance bug that plagued eso for a while didn't help either. Didn't see the patch notes yet, but I really hope it's a positive trend onwards.

I am almost ashamed to admit that after the big rush I felt with DF... that ESO is still the best MMORPG in the market, despite its many flaws, it's just fun and I love how old content always matters no matter how many shit they release. After leveling a bunch of alts in DF -- I just couldn't bring myself to get back into the old M+ & raid grind. Fuck that shit. ESO rules and more people should know about it. That said, I'm a huge uncle Herma & Lovecraft fan, so I'm really looking forward to the Arcanist.

Idk chief I’ve only ever seen your vids of getting to lvl 10 and then stopping, what’s your champion lvl? Have you don’t all the raids and modes? How many hours do you have into end game content? My biggest issue with eso is the homogenization that zos pushes. None of the classes have identity and when one starts to get one zos either nerfs it or change skills so that other classes can have access to a skill that is similar. The new class will just melt in the pot with the others. And I get why zos does this, they don't want people to feel like their favorite class sucks which happened alot early on in the games history. I just wished that they had of went in the direction of making classes really good at certain things. Warden could be pet focused with multiple permanent pets like a Pokémon trainer. Sorcs could be aoe Champs. Nightblade for single target. Dks for dots with fire and poison. Necro maybe undead sort of like warden but instead of pets you raise the enemy to fight for you. Templar could be more healing and buff focused. I think the no class restrictions kind of doomed the game to the homogenization hell state that it's in now. I still like the story tho which is why I still play, so far no mmo has been able to top eso when it comes to the narratives and that's a personal opinion so don't take it as fact

If you ever played DnD, this new Arcanist class seems to share a lot of similarities with the Warlock, a class that uses a lot of Eldritch spells in combat, which comes from their "Patron Deity", mostly Eldritch gods that you so happens to have made a pact with in order to wield their powers. And by the looks of it, our "patron deity" for this class would be Hermaeus mora, who so happen to be THE Eldritch god in the TES lore

I love ESO and the only reason I don't play it for a while, is because I run out of story content. That's what ESO is for me, story, exploration, looting anything not nailed down, cosmetics, housing, fishing, companions, and interesting characters to meet and care about. Naryu Virian being one of my favourite characters, so I'm looking forward to a whole new area of Tamriel to explore. The class thing I don't care so much about, but I may give it a go. I have the style I like to play in, but new delves to explore I love them so much. The story and questing is really good in ESO, the mmorpg doesn't just take the genre, and take the single player skin of Skyrim, oblivion. And just wrap it round the game, no the game always feels like your playing those games but amplified. The games business model is really good, you can play the game totally free; minus the cost of the base game. But if you take out a subscription, unlike other games. You actually get something for it, extra content, extra xp, more bank space, the crafting bag, coins you can save up to buy cosmetics, houses with. It's fair and done very well, and the base game to try it out is very cheap.

I think my issue with the Arcanist is the roleplaying potential. Granted that we were given The Necromancer class in Elsweyr, a dark magic user class that summons the dead, now we have the Arcanist, a dark magic user class that summons tentacles. It's like they just took the necromancer and replaced pale blue with neon green.

Is the class cool? Yes. Will it save the game? No, partly because the game isn't dying, but even if it was it isn't because of a missing class. I can tell you one thing that is a major factor and it haunts wow too, faction conflict. ESO's whole premise is 3 factions vying for power in Cirodiil. Sure, there are trials and dungeons and overland sets and housing and all that is cool, but pvp is a cornerstone of this game it it is massively neglected. As long as ZOS ignores improvements here a massive portion of the game and even the lore will be neglected and I believe it hurts the game and causes a portion of players to leave. Also, there are long standing bugs and performance problems that get neglected and instead of cool new content we get a card game which was even more niche than pvp and an overall dud I think. Many feel ESO is in maintenance mode and we are looking for signs that it isn't, that is where the new class does help a little.

PVP is definitely in maintenance mode - at this point I'd be surprised if they released any new significant updates to PVP. PVP focused players perhaps should look elsewhere (alas, not elseweyr). The game as a whole though definitely isn't in maintenance mode. They're still releasing new content regularly - compare to say Guild Wars 2, which hasn't had any new content for a while and no roadmap for future content.

The whole game is neglected. Server performance is most critical in PVP content so it is obvious that PVP is the most affected but not opening doors in Dungeons, immortal invisible and otherwise bugged Bosses, long maintenances and 700 slots limits for furniture in housing has one common thing. It is lack of performance, lack of code quality, lack of testing and zero long term vision and stability. Oh by the way. @Raod Van Laon Tot Aoke agreed, most players dislike it, but that is because of the lag I think. That doesn't mean the game wasn't designed with it in mind. The whole design was heavily influenced by Dark Ages of Camelot where Matt Firor came from. 3 faction pvp, central battleground with keeps and seige craft, even alliance points were realm ranks, it's almost identical. In DAoC pvp was a core part of the game, it was pretty much the main part of the game that is why I say that. So I won't argue that most players don't like it, but it is a central feature that has been neglected

Combo system sounds fun, however like Warden they also announced the Combo and also with Necromancer. My opinion is that they will instead repeat the process and make it PvP only. As in ESO should we find a book and use it to attack a squirrel we basicly unlock that weapon skill tree too, no matter what other class you are using, making me doubt if adding a new class would be a smart move to begin with. Since its only requirement would be the the DLC.

I love eso been playing since beta..Been a tes fan since oblivion. Only issue I have with eso on a fundemental level (apart from the nish stuff) I really dislike the fact how all the classes at least on pvp front feels the same. Each class strives for the same buffs via different skills, and usually there are 2 go to sets. Essentially classes to a certain degree feels like reskins. Hope arcanist feels more unique.

I still wait for a complete rework for combat mechanics, weaving included and the UI revamp to show the damn global cooldowns like in any normal game. Till than, no class is important for me, I play ESO just for the story and immersion (10x better than WOW or any other mmo, even better than most single player rpgs) and WOW for pvp and the fun of pushing keys.

I'd really like to see a class with NO magic ability... Purely savage weapon brutality would be magnificent and would be my chosen class from that day forward... The magic gets a bit absurd sometimes... It's always ridiculous on the battlegrounds when enemy players actually consist of 12 enemies with all of the summoned creatures... And that on top of already being overpowered classes, that by the way, all seem to have skills that you can't block or dodge... A skill, especially an ultimate, should go to the one who casts first instead of being cancelled because one skill can't be blocked... A strictly berserker class would be fantastic... Instead of all of these new patches or classes, they should really focus on letting you WALK UP A FUCKING HILL... But whatever...

Sadly, ESO is dying as well, lost lots of players, imo it's in a much more worse spot than WoW, GW2 etc...class won't save this game, but new real content, new types of content, class redesign, gearing approach\sets redesign, server perf.fix probably can save this game, but it won't happen, at least in near future, but still, this expanshion seems better than the last ones, at least it brings smth new.

They admit they didn't started coding new chapter yet. Their are spending money on promo videos on something that even doesn't exist. Yesterday maintenance on EU server took 8 hours, then game crashed and tomorrow is another 6 hours maintenance. I tell you this. ESO game is dead. Cheap promises, lies, what they will introduce cost them nothing. I want to see REAL stuff. New hardware for PC EU. Code rework. Short maintenance times. Bug fixes, shielding fix for example. Smooth and ballanced PVP. Not new prepurchase mount which is ... invisible. They are making the game worse and worse update after update and I don't care about empty words and promises anymore. This game sucks and everybody knows it.

A new class isn't going to get me back to play ESO. What would get me back is better loot drops, Solo, Bosses that do not get back to full health each time they kill you the first of many times? Solo players get the shaft in ESO, Pvp is worst than at lauch when it actually was fun. Get rid of loot boxes and just add better loot drops, Geeee maybe that why loot drops are low....need to buy Loot boxes?

This game has a lot of unknowns related to class balance, devs who don't listen to their community, scam itemstore. Just hiding how long the servers haven't been replaced and their stupid responses...

I want multiclassing lol if it's too powerful then one bar for one class and 2nd bar for the other class lol. Love the look of Arcanist and the skills sound cool not too sold on the build combo points "yet" it could be ok BUT managing combo points build up AND your Mana bar might just be annoying. Tho the little floating green triangles as a visual for the combo points look like it will be less bar-watching and more active visually.

I played / play wow since the first fcking game, own every expansion pack and will continue playing it when a expansion releases. but i decided to stop wow.. max level of expansion do all dungeons and lfr's and quit... ESO has so much more to offer... and it even looks better. sorry wow ppl but i think the love for wow is deteriorating slowly over time. the interest is getting lower and lower every year.

As long as they don t remove the cancer weaving combat system and add visuals on Ui for the damn GCD of both white and special attacks, the game is unplayable no matter the class. Shame because I love it more then wow or any other single player game in terms of immersion and story. Anyway, can t wait to play next chapter of Morrowind, already preordered it.
