This came out in the summer of 1969. I hid the fact that secretly, I loved this song! I was 13 yrs old, but didn't want to admit I was digging this "Bubble Gum" song by the "Archies." Named after the comic Books and tv cartoons of the same name. There is a cartoon version of the Archie characters (Archie, Jughead, Reggie, Veronica etc. singing this song. Nice memories. Thank You

My 4 yr. old little girl self is happy too! My sister was 10 years older (14), and had the 45; little me would ask her to play it over, and over, and over. To this day, she still brings this up, saying it was my first favorite pop song (I'm 57). Later I remember her playing a Rod Stewart album and she says the grooves were deep in part of the album because I demanded her to Maggie May constantly 😂.

Ron Dante was the lead singer of The Archies and also the lead singer of the group The Cuff Links. In October 1969, The Cuff Links song "Tracy" reached the top 10 while "Sugar, Sugar" was also in the top 10.

Actually Ron Dante was the only member of the Archies. the rest were session musicians. Great song. Love the Cufflinks and Tracy as well.

Someone correct me if I'm misremembering, but I believe I got this record by cutting it off the back of a cereal box. Either that or it was in the cereal box. Regardless, it was made of cardboard; I'm surprised it played!

That's the thing about bubblegum music. They were written to sound wholesome to kids, but the songs also often had lyrics in them that adults could take another way, and that kind of made them more fun. When the kids from the Brady Bunch got their own cartoon (which swiped a lot of animation from the Archies BTW), their Brady Kids band did a song called "Candy (Sugar Shoppe)" that had a log of double entendres in it.

This video clip was of Ron Dante when he appeared on a syndicated TV show called the Larry Kane Show. I believe it was in 1971. By then it was well known that he was the voice of the Archies.

This song was originally earmarked for The Monkees, but they were starting to get serious about their music, so they refused so perform it. This prompted their manager into inventing a cartoon band that wouldn't talk back and refuse to record songs; The Archies of course! For what it's worth, The Monkees would have done a fantastic version of it!

Never understood why parents didn't get how sexual this song was. I did when I was 5 or 6 and heard how girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice--like honey. i.e. honey-pot and honey trap. I got embarrassed whenever a girl sang this song around me.
