On the roof, I would put a large fluorescent orange circle sticker. If you do get stuck in the snow, you will be visible from the air. A white van in the snow is hard to spot. Also, please bear-proof your living area. They can smell food from six miles away. Also, put bear spray holsters in the cab living area. When you get to Alaska, you can purchase the spray bottles. Lastly the Garmin inReach Mini 2 is a bloody good bit of kit, the golden rule od adventure travel with communication is one is none two is one. I lived in Canada in the North for over a year as an adventure guide and military survival instructor. Its a beautiful and well-maintained country, but it still catches people out. Also, you should reach out to Sainsbury and take a food delivery to someone as far north as possible. The media team would love that, and you might get some moolah to help. love ya xxx

Using diesel water heaters for hot water is very common on houseboats. Generally the setup will have a calorifier that has 2 coils and an immersion element. One coil will take a feed from the water heater (which is usually the central heating circuit). The other coil will take a feed from the engine cooling circuit. The immersion can be used when on shore power. The result is the ability to get hot water from running the engine, running the heater, or from shore. You can also get a bit more advanced and run the immersion as a solar dump which turns on when the batteries are charged and shuts off when they drop a certain percentage.

One of the best propper winter tyres for a campervan in really cold weather on icy roads is Michelin Agilis X-Ice North, they will not become rock hard and slippery in below -30 like many others made for campers. Other than that a few must things: Isolate ALL water tanks including gray water and fit electric heater pads with thermostat on them, auxiliary diesel heater that heat both engine coolant and cabin air like a Truma Combi D 6 E (diesel & electric), spare diesel tank and plenty of isolation
@truebluetravellers3 күн бұрын
Thanks mate, Yeah we saw allot of people running them in Norway, but picked the all terrains just for use all over really after the snow too, The water tanks, grey and fresh are inside the box to keep warm and we run a diesel heater for heating, also carry a full spare, gonna carry 40littres of spare diesel and the box is all fully insulated panels, hopefully we are prepared 🤞👍

Our Autoterm hydronic has been flawless, and as you say comes with more than enough kit to fit it to any application. We run it through a 30ltr calorifier, two towel rails for radiators and a matrix blower, and it's been great. The glycol lines for the circuit run under the subfloor to take the chill off the floor. The calorifier circuit is 18mm and 15mm rubber hose, and the heating branch loop is 15mm Speedfit, which is ethylene glycol resistant. The two circuits are balanced with ball valves for the different sizes of piping, just listen for a change in the pump noise and back off each valve accordingly when adjusting for summer and winter needs. We also have a small fan on a thermo-switch pumping latent warm air from the calorifier cupboard into the garage.

Mercedes has an OEM engine pre-heater from Eberspacher. I bought 2 on eBay with factory mounts for our Sprinter. It might be worth seeing if that is a valid setup for your future underfloor heating.

If you are going to Alaska and Canada, I would put a sizeable "Bambi Whacker" (a grill guard) on the front. You have a good chance of experiencing Moose, Deer, Elk, Reindeer, etc. on the roads there... The mammals are huge there. At the very least, it will give you a fighting chance at surviving the impact and may keep you on the road.

It's Really Not that bad - I've lived in Canada (& not in a city) for almost 70 years & drive a sh*t tonne. I hit only ONE deer 50 years ago & drove away. Dats IT. & I don't know that many friends who have even hit a single large animal. BTW if you hit a moose or elk or bear your sad little bull bar ain't gonna help you much. You not driving away after hitting one of those - that's what you call up here a TRIP Ending Incident.

@ totally agree, but it’s better than not having anything at all. At least you might survive it. I know a moose is damn tall, it would probably go right through the cab.

@@garydavis5336 I've had a self built Transit Van for 8 years (140k kms) & have never considered a B ULL bar. Sure you could harden any vehicle for XYZ occurrence - But cost & more importantly weight would add up real quick & would reduce manuverabily - I put my money in better suspension & shocks.

Yeah It was the same in oz really, hopefully I’ve got a little gadget coming which will be just the job for this sort of thing 👍

@@truebluetravellers don't tell me you got sucked into buying a deer whistles (or the electronic version-") It's so cute that city slickers fall for these gadgets. When you pass thru Winnipeg (u will cuz you have NO Choice) I've got a bridge to sell you!!!

The General is the best tool you have John as she is a multi functional bit of kit. Some good upgrades can’t wait to see the finished version Keep Jess fuelled up with high octane fuel and I’ll see you both next Saturday

I live on a Narrowboat, my Webasto gives me 4 radiators and a Calorifier tank (imersion) full of hot water, the tank is twin coil, one of which is plumbed into the engine cooling system, free hot water when engine is running, im sure you'll find space for a large tank when you build your large truck based overlander, Paris Daker style.

Lol...okay, I have to say that the thing I've learned the most from your videos is I'll never know enough to even come close to having a mechanically and electronically prepared vehicle! 😂😂😂! It's probably good that I don't have plans to hit the Arctic 😅. My Mechanical impairment put aside, as usual, your video was so entertaining, and I luv ya both! I'm really looking forward to seeing the prep you're doing for this trip, and of course, super excited to watch your shenanigans on your Canada trip! You two are very talented and so funny! It's always a blast to watch your weekly vids. Thanks so much for doing what you do and for sharing it with us! ❤Lauren❤

Ah thanks very much Lauren, the thing is people have done and still will do these trips without most of the prep we have done but we just like to be prepared for the worst really coz you never know hey 😊💙💙💙
