The Arabian ranch I worked at as a kid housed some wild Mustangs from Suzanville, CA for a bit. Their stud broke in and mated with one and that became my horse :) So i had a half Arabian Half Mustang, and he was a very spirited horse!

It seems to me that when separated from other horses, mustangs-- being the highly social animals that they are-- become desperate for a friend and/or a leader. And since they're not really exposed to humans before their capture, and their only exposure is being branded and fed while kept with other horses, humans are a largely unknown quantity to them. Their first impression of a human probably determines whether they see them as potential friends or predators. That might have something to do with it, anyway. The desire for companionship, the lack of alarming behavior by the human, etc. I'm sure the horse's natural temperament has a say in it, too. Some are just calmer, some are more high-strung.

Elisa, I know this video was from several years ago, we are all much older and wiser now. I hope if asked the same thing now you would have a lot more to say about the wild mustang. After all, their brilliance enabled you to show your skill as a trainer and that must also be honored. As you showed us, they are magic!

PepperFlame Dickens Lots and I mean LOTS of desensitizing. With the end of the rope, a whip, plastic bag, plywood, tarps, etc. Remember... if the horse moves away when you are desensitizing, follow them! If you stop, they learn that moving away is the answer. Also, if they are scared of the trailer, work them away, rest them near. Repeat many times until you can eventually rest in the trailer. They will think of that as their safe place

@SunnyReflector10 жыл бұрын
I believe this horse was probably once domesticated and escaped with the herd. Many horses have done this which the blm will just capture and throw them in as mustangs to get rid of the problem. This horse doesn't seem to resemble a mustang in which you'll mostly see a stockier build. I'm not saying this one is not a mustang but it is a big possibility of just a horse that escaped and became wild. Which most likely he should be very easy to domesticate again and will remember anything he's taught. A horse who's never been touched doesn't allow to you pet them the first day and would bolt out of that trailer.
@eringailfarms10 жыл бұрын
She has had multiple mustangs that she has worked with and they are all as calm as him by the end of the day.
@katem3609 жыл бұрын
SunnyReflector No, most of the mustangs are lean and short. Sometimes you'll find stockier, 15hh+ ones. And not every mustang will bolt and not allow them to be touched. >.> And NO, he had no training before. He came from the wild, was in a holding pen with no handling except being chased with flags to move from a trailer to a pen or whatever. There are mustangs that are calmer and others that are more reactive. If you watch Rune and Nimh, they both ran out of the trailer. However, by the end of the day, Elisa could pet Rune but Nimh was more standoffish. Mustang ancestors were domesticated horses that either escaped or were let go. Today, those in the wild are not domesticated. They are wild.
@Blanchemains8 жыл бұрын
Sunny, it's more likely Fledge was either born in the BLM facility or captured as a very young horse. They don't do a lot with them but the horses become accustomed to being around people. You would be surprised at how friendly and curious a lot of the mustangs are when you visit the holding pens. Also, the horse's build totally depends on which herd management area the horse was taken from. My mustang is tall (15.2) and leggy.
@ruben39376 жыл бұрын

aren't there enough abused and neglected horses around in captivity to rescue and rehabilitate than to not have to take a wild animal from its home and herd?
@alexj-t233110 жыл бұрын
Yes, but there are also thousands of mustangs sitting around in crowded holding facilities who have been there for years. Adopting a mustang or a rescue horse is always a good thing, but not adopting a mustang will not stop the round-ups because it is not a supply and demand kind of thing. Now that horse slaughter is legal they also get shipped out to the slaughter houses too.
@DJDangersJessiJane11 жыл бұрын
She got him through the BLM, who does hardly anything with them other than feed and brand them. They know nothing. The BLM puts on "Extreme Mustang Makeovers" to find mustangs good homes.

It is not wild at all. Wild animals run away from human, and attach human when we approach closer to them.
@chloeponyblanket815610 жыл бұрын
Mustang means wild this is a wild animal from the plains of america, just because it doesnt 'attack' doesnt mean its not a wild animal, horses are prey animals they flight or fight most flight
@katem3609 жыл бұрын
VietFiddle "Wild animals" are normally predators, when I hear someone say that term I think of bobcats, mountain lions, bears, etc. Not mustangs. Fledge was WILD, but there are a thousand mustangs and each has their own personality. Some are more reactive, others are calmer and more trusting.
