My theory now is that Ace Ventura was raised by birds. That's his hidden backstory. It's why he moves like a bird, and why he wears bright colors and styles his hair in an exaggerated pompadour, it's to mimic the bright plumage he doesn't have. His bird family were killed by poachers, which gave him his motivation to become an animal detective and also his distrust of humans.

Now after looking at not just his body language, but all his mannerisms, it is clear to me that Ace Ventura is a bird that somehow got turned into a human. I would say that the way I made the movie make sense in my mind is that Ace Ventura seems to have really severe ADHD, was never properly treated or diagnosed &, after so many years of being generally hated & not knowing how to make people accept him, he simply stopped trying to control his behavior altogether. Then he formed a strong affinity for animals & became a pet detective because he was able to associate and get along with animals easier. If you think about it, the way the movie ends even seems to go along with the ADHD theme by completely jumping the shark & being something that such a person might just shout out as a joke to mess with people, yet, as nonsensical as it seems in reality, it turns out to be right.

The "socio" in sociopathy means, y'know, society. A sociopath is someone who doesn't give a shit about society or social norms; the rules of conduct and morality espoused by human society. Whether or not he loves animals doesn't really have anything to do with that; sociopathy is specifically human.
@Ilovepoopin3 жыл бұрын
@@viljamtheninja Thank you. I was getting annoyed from reading the comments that no one comments on the clear misuse of the word Sociopaths. He propbably mean Psychopathic, but still, even then he might actually be classified as a psychopath - he did just ram cops with no remove and in complete selfishness to his own goals. That, to me, is where he went from being sociopath to psychopathic.

Your comment about the audience not being meant to tolerate Ace reminded me of the first time I showed What About Bob? to my wife. She said she didn’t care for it because she found Bill Murray’s Bob to be annoying and related more with Richard Dreyfus’s Dr. Marvin, but that the point of the movie. The audience is initially meant to relate more to Dr. Marvin’s annoyance, but it becomes clear through the film that his reaction to Bob is as over the top as Bob’s goofiness, and they are mirroring each other’s insanity.

I wouldn't say he's a sociopath, he has a deep empathy for animals and sociopaths don't really have an ability to have empathy to anything, he's more like a misanthrope perhaps partially born out of his distain for how humans treat animals. After watching this I'm wondering if the character of Ace Ventura isn't more like an animal that has entered the human world. As an animal he is not inhibited by the restraints you find with a human being. If an animal is hungry it eats or if it is tired it sleeps; not much more needs to be said. Animals are not interested in interaction or what others feel, it simply follows whatever its needs currently are, rather than try to restrain those needs. As for the movie itself, I still think it is a comedy and the purpose of a comic character in a story that can be dark is that character allows you to laugh at that darkness and in some way the dark aspects actually might enhance the comedy.

It didn't occur to me when I saw this as a kid in the 90s that that "actually a man" plot point might perpetuate fear, distrust, and misunderstanding of trans people. I recently saw the documentary Disclosure, which is about transgender depictions in film and TV, and this movie was included in it. A trans man was like "I loved this movie and Jim Carrey's wackiness as a kid, but I rewatched it as an adult and was kind of horrified by the implications of the ending!" One joke isn't going to kill someone, but over and over, those lazy "actually a man" jokes add up and create a false image of trans people, especially for those who've never even met someone who's trans, especially when the few depictions of trans or trans-adjacent characters are by people who themselves have never met someone who's trans, and contribute to their marginalization and susceptibility to violence.

Surely the Mission Impossible scene proves that his playing at being an action hero throughout the film isn't designed to impress other people, but just to entertain himself, like a child playing pretend. His personal entertainment is also the only thing he actually does seem to value the attention of others for, as he obviously has a high need for stimulation and the dopamine kick that comes from making an impact on your surroundings, so creating shocked, confused or angry reactions is one of the ways he gets his kicks. The significance of the relationship with Melissa is that she's the only person whose opinion of him he finds any reason to care about, but having never treated other people's minds as anything more than toys (not mirrors, as you imply), he's unable to suddenly make himself into tolerable company.

I give Ace V an easy time about its transphobic stuff. I don't think Finkle's transition had anything to do with gender issues, and instead became part of his crazy but calculated plan after he discovered the missing hiker article. All the homophobic vomit stuff was, imo, a great little satire on The Crying Game, and not just a "boys kissing boys is gross" joke that was made in bad faith. If anything, I think the idea that a pro foot ball player could transition flawlessly into a Sigourney Weaver looking hottie within a few years offered a bit of a pipe dream to gender questioning folk in a pre-hormone therapy world.
