These films were such a product of their time. LIke to me they were a perfect blend of teen sex comedies and late 90s horror flicks but the fact they were aimed for children made them so bizarre. I adored them as a kid and I watch them fondly still(I unapologeticly enjoy the hell outta them). I think if they tried it again, a Sam Raimi vibe would be the way to go. Horror Comedies for the 20 year old crowd.

Daphne is my favorite. Because when I was a little girl, the only thing you needed to make me love a cartoon character was for their color scheme to be purple, and Daphne was a pretty girl with a purple dress. Now I like her because of the eventual subversion of the damsel in distress trope and how modern incarnations turn her girly personality into an asset instead of leaving her foolish and danger prone, which is awesome. But I also still like pretty girls and purple dresses, so there you go. Some movies aren’t meant to be art, just fun, and that’s how I see Scooby Doo. Objectively shitty, but when I think of it I remember having fun watching it, and that’s enough for me.

Rods toy box I always saw the movie attempting to be a loose adaptation of Zombie Island, with the team split and the real monsters and the scrappy hate, with some modern sarcasm and satire thrown in. I think that, like the Mario Bros. movie, the studio and director should have been on the same page from the start, and changing the tone partway through production just made things oddly disjointed. That, and Gunn shouldn't have attempted an R-rated Scooby Doo film to begin with, maybe PG-13. We are talking about a children's franchise whose most adult films up to that point hadn't gone past PG.

I felt that the iconic "Fart Contest" scene was an ably laconic statement on the then-relaxing quality standards in the baked beans industry; as, of course, the "Shaggy" character and the "Scooby-Doo" were able to release enormous amounts of pressurized methane gas from their anuses, we were painfully reminded of what was then a very serious issue facing many of us in the Western hemisphere at the time. Equally telling was the "Shaggy" characters' ability to _ignite_ his violent flatulence, which of course shined an accusing light on just how rancid our then-baked bean farts truly WERE. A daring and audacious metaphor on the filmmakers' part. And, naturally, the best part of all is that it has dated _wonderfully._ Pip pip! Good show!

It's because the film was too mature for kids to grasp. Scooby Doo was a sacred franchise for kids because they aren't taken seriously like adults are when it comes to creating concepts for a demographic. Like some of the stuff you think are for kids really aren't for them. So to have bunch of adult actors like Gellar and Prinze take that away from them when they've barely touched a movie aimed at kids was a slap in the face to the legacy of Scooby Doo. Kids didnt know who Lillard, Gellar and Freddie Prinze we're at the time.

While the concept of an R-rated adult Scooby-Doo would have been interesting, if done as a satire, I love these flicks because they don't do what the likes of the live action Transformers of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adaptations do: Try to make it pointlessly dark or edgy. I know that those examples came after the Scooby-Doo films but, like you said, the fact that characters FEEL and LOOK just like cartoon characters in a real-world setting is truly is refreshing in my opinion. The director, Raja Gosnell, wanted a real-life couple to play Daphne and Fred. His first choice was Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. Prinze Jr. didn't originally want to do the movie because he felt it wouldn't live up to the Scooby cartoons, but Gellar talked him into it. This was the last Scooby-Doo project franchise to be created and produced by both William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Hanna died on March 22, 2001. After filming was completed, Freddie Prinze Jr. had to shave his head, because the bleach ruined his hair. Sarah Michelle Gellar hated wearing Daphne's purple go-go boots and would change into comfy sneakers whenever she was able. Freddie Prinze Jr. hated wearing the trademark ascot Fred usually wore in the original cartoons. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jennifer Aniston were considered for the role of Daphne. One of the few Scooby-Doo films to reveal the real first names of Scooby and Shaggy as, respectively, Scoobert and Norville. Frank Welker, who has voiced Freddy Jones in all the Scooby-Doo cartoons, provides his voice to one of the evil creatures in this movie. From 2002 Welker has also taken on the job of voicing Scooby-Doo. Despite the movie poster of the gang being in front of the shadow of the Luna Ghost the villain only appears in the first few minutes of the film. This is because the Luna Ghost was originally intended to be the main antagonist in an early draft of the script. In reality, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar are married, having had two children together. Ironically, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is blonde, portrayed the red-haired Daphne, while Isla Fisher, who is redheaded, portrayed the blonde Mary Jane. Linda Cardellini and Isla Fisher were fans of the cartoon before they were cast in the film. The very last Hanna-Barbera live-action movie. Originally, Scrappy Doo was not going to be the main villain. At the end of the film, Old Man Smithers aka "the Luna Ghost" from the beginning of the movie was going to be behind the event of the film. Throughout the film, there are hints that Mr. Mondavarious is actually Scrappy. He is seen scratching behind his ear as if he had fleas. His office also has bookends in the shape of dog heads and a carved dog head statue. Though James Gunn hasn't entirely disowned the film, he has expressed regret in making Scrappy the main villain of the film, after receiving some backlash from the character's fans. James Gunn's original screenplay had the villain finally revealed as actor Don Knotts, a payoff to Fred's line referring to Scooby's mistake at his Christmas party. The kitchen in the Spooky Island Castle where Shaggy and Scooby have their burp/fart competition is the same kitchen in which the brainwashing training video was filmed. This explains why there is a camera in the kitchen and Shaggy says "lights, camera, action. Huh Scoob" when he notices it.

Well this explains why I love this movie so much. I'm under the impression it might have the right amount of sophistication for you: it still has traditional elements of the series, but the humor is much more sly than what was in _What's New, Scooby Doo?_ , and there is a single over-arching mystery, featuring an older, more corrupt group of mystery-solvers. I think what you did not research was, before the introduction of Scrappy, Scooby doo ratings were sinking and the studio made Scrappy as a last resort to help save the franchise and if it failed, they would just have to shut down scooby doo forever.. And the introduction of Scrappy brought new life to the series, and as ratings went up (clearly people were interested) the producers put 2 and 2 together and decided to put more focus on scrappy as according to them, he was the reason for good ratings..when the ratings started to fall again, they tried different formats until the original was finally restored.. Without Scrappy, there would be no more Scooby Dooby Doo

Daphne was always my favorite but she really became a favorite after she finally learned how to throw hands 😂 and Shaggy is a close second being a fellow stoner. 😂

When it comes to choosing favorite characters, if we're talking about the main cast, as cheap of an answer as it may be, my favorite Scooby-Doo characters is Mystery Inc. as a whole. Each one of them works off each other and in many ways need each other, Scooby needs Shaggy, Fred needs Daphne, Velma needs everyone, and everyone needs her, and because of the family theme that has carried itself throughout each incarnation, both TV and film, I honestly love the Mystery Inc. characters as they are presented as a collective. My favorite guest characters are the Hex Girls and Vincent Van Ghoul (because of Vincent Price voicing him), my favorite one off supporting characters is the Grimwood Girls from Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School and I also like Scrappy, both as a hero and as a villain. (Especially in the Scooby Apocalypse comics by DC.) My favorite villain in the entire series Professor Pericles and Mr. E from Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated (which I cannot stress enough, is a show I highly recommend you give a watch).

I will always enjoy monsters unleashed. The monsters were incredible to my young mind, I felt for scooby and shaggy feeling useless, wanting to help, and the action scenes felt exciting to watch. Also, scooby and shaggy vs the Cotten candy monster always made me laugh.

Fun fact: Matthew Lillard (Shaggy) attended the same high school I did, Foothill High School in Tustin, California; though he was a student there long before I was. I only graduated from there two years ago.

This will always be one of my all time favourite family films, maybe that's just nostalgia talking but i'll always stand by that, a film that can entertain ANY demographic is special in my books, shame we only got 2 of these films really

Velma is my favorite character because she's easily the smartest and most level headed person in her group and is a vital member of the group, but due to her shy and introverted nature, she goes largely unnoticed and unappreciated. That's something a lot of people can really relate to. Also she's hot.

shaggy and velma are my favourite characters because i see myself in both of them, i’m a dorky know-it-all who is a huge coward (shoutout to my anxiety) and eats way too much. one reason i love the mystery inc. series so much is how much more they fleshed out velma, which made her that much more relatable to me

I really liked this video! I have always loved the first scooby-doo movie and nobody ever seems to agree with me! Spot on about Shaggy's actor, he is terrific. I had no idea the same guy that wrote Guardians wrote this movie, that's awesome. Good stuff man

I adore the live actions movie, is it purely fueled by my nostalgia and love of the scooby doo show, yes, but let me just say there is no other movies like them, and that’s why I like them so much!

It used to be Daphne because I wanted to be her, especially after she became less of a damsel in distress. She is still my favorite, but Velma has found herself up there due to her sassiness, underappreciation, and smarts. She really is a role model for younger girls and Daphne slowly is becoming one too.

Fred's narcissism and ego were never the problem for me in this movie. His stupidity is my problem with his character. The original Fred was not stupid. He was the second smartest in their group, and a very competent leader. The point where we start getting dumb Fred is A Pup Named Scooby Doo, where Freddy is portrayed as a dumb kid who believes in any conspiracy theory out there. It was charming for that, and you could believe that he grows out of that later. Then Scooby shows began making adult Freddy that dumb, and dumber, and the movie Fred (at least in the first one, since he's more self-aware in the sequel) is one of the dumbest Freds we've gotten.

I love both movies! Sure, it's not A rating but they do things that perfectly give life to a universe. As a kid all these jokes went over my head, but I love it even more watching as an adult. It is a parody that is not over the top and doesn't take itself too seriously. The actors do an amazing job of capturing the 1960's characters with some humor and giving them a little bit of humanity to ground them in the real world. The scene where Shaggy is disguised as a minion carrying Scooby to the sacrifice is a perfect example of this. They talk about their friendship in a way that is so genuine it almost brings a tear to my eye even still, but then you realize the circumstance and that his is just a CGI dog when Scooby's "soul" is ripped from his body. The cartoonish nature of the sacrifice really gives a 180 to the emotional conversation that happened just before. I think the second movie does an excellent job in the same regards as well, and even in other areas. But since you did not bring it up, I won't bother.

I used to love this movie, it's awesome to see a whole video dedicated to it. My favourite character is probably generally Fred for most series of Scooby, especially Mystery Inc. His obsession with traps was always good for a laugh and his realisation of his feelings for Daphne was great. Also he's always the leader of the gang, and he gets extra props for being the only character to still be voiced by the original voice actor, I don't know what they'll do if he ever retires. In Be Cool, Scooby-Doo it's tough, I loved all the characters in that one, but my favourite's probably Scooby, I love his dry humour and wittiness, but Fred and Daphne come in a fairly close second. Keep up the great videos, you've got me interested enough in the first four reboot movies to go back and watch them all again (I only saw two or three as a kid). Also, have you seen Be Cool, Scooby-Doo, if so what'd you think of it?
