Can't help but feel that, to get to the next level, I just need to practice a whole awful lot more. I am a student right now but I hope I can continue to pursue bladesmithing as a hobby. I love the video and all the work you and Steve put into it. It seems a lot of experienced bladesmiths I've seen on KZbin prefer to profile the knife, heat treat, then grind the bevels. This is done to avoid warping due to uneven bevels and thinner material if the bevels are forged prior to heat treat. Do you find that a blade has any superior qualities, such as edge retention, when you forge the bevels prior to heat treat, or does this only decrease the grinding time and increase the likelihood of warpage?
@ThatWorks3 ай бұрын
It's best to have the edge thinned down so it quenches faster so you get a harder edge. Those good enough to forge their bevels close enough, just profile and heat treat. Some need to do a little rough grinding on the bevels before the quench. You want about the thickness of a nickle at the edge on most materials.

Also some simple knifes (mostly with wooden grips), a ram head, a medieval style fork, a clasp for my medieval cloak and some other stuff. The most difficult part of blacksmithing imho is managing and preventing cold shuts. To an extent, any minor unintended overhang or improperly matched notch here or there, or putting a punch in the wrong place to knock out a biscuit could result in a bad cold shut that you can just never get out of a piece. Even experienced smiths occasionally produce fish mouths when forging points on blades. It'll just get ya if you try to move the metal the wrong way.

@@skoitchI assume you mean the curlicue? If so, it's such a fine point that you simply don't have time to work it at a high heat as it cools so rapidly. Plus, it's not a working part of the knife, and bending as opposed to striking is a lot less stressful on the steel.

I really enjoyed the video, though I found the intro was a little confusing. "It is said that of you want to be a good bladesmith, practice being a blacksmith. Our counterargument: practice being a blacksmith!"
@ThatWorks3 ай бұрын
Sorry if it confused. What I meant was that this is blade forging but it has a lot of blacksmithing techniques involved. Some people just want to go strait to blades instead of learning real blacksmithing and this is one of those tasks that we argue could help you "skip" a step.
@BlueFlame173 ай бұрын
This may sound stupid, but is the blacksmith knife for precision cutting? The more I look at the handle, I keep wondering about the right way to grip it. At first, I thought the loop was a guard for the knuckle, but then some make it so small that only a finger or so can fit through. AM I overthinking this, or is this one of those "do this, not that" things?
