Jansen and Karn were a bonkers rhythm section - as a listener, it always makes my head hurt to think about the individual parts they were playing, but as a band, it all just flowed. They were two of five of the slickest, most sophisticated art rockers to ever record - lightning in a bottle from 1979 to 1981: three magnificent albums.

Jansen & Karn what a superb & truly original musical partnership, and they looked fantastic on stage.

Steve Jansen was one those few drummers that had a very distinct way of playing his drums... He was never like most usual drummers playing off the Hi Hat & Snare as he was always playing all over the kit & would return to hitting the snare when he needed to & this drum cover is a perfect example of his own unique style of playing his drums... That whole band has maverick musicians thats played like no one else & Steve on drums & Mick on bass guitar , talk about on another level... I've still to see anyone better them or come up with such a unique styles that both played their instruments... Japan were ahead of their time then & are still ahead of their time now & thats not looking through rose tinted glasses , Its fact... RIP Mick Karn .....

Listen I don't know if you are aware but there are two versions of The Art of Parties. One is the single version, and the other is the album version. This one is the album version. When they played The Art of Parties live, they always played the single version. The album version has a synth bassline in the verse dubbed on top of Mick Karn's bass.

Brilliant thanks. That was very impressive Always loved the drumming on this track. I have'nt a clue how to play the drums, so can anyone tell me how highly Steve Jansen is rated as a drummer? Or, how good is he? In my opinion, for what it's worth, I think his playing is really original and unusual and comes to the fore in a lot of the songs, like Mick's basslines. Cheers👍🏼

I think Steve & Mick are huge influences but I've never seen Steve on a 'best drummer league table' Japan as a band were so underrated at the time and possibly because they stopped too soon.

Funny, but that sounds like Phil Manzanera or maybe Robert Fripp on guitar. Reminds me of some of the riffs off 'Fashion' by Bowie. Roughly around the same time so I shouldn't be surprised. But this track, and indeed pretty much all of this version of Japan's work, stands on its own. Brilliant stuff

Unaccredited members of bands that help create so much of the song soon part ways with each other, no one wins. This must have been a band leader decision, usually the singer and management thinking some members are more important than others. If people can't see and hear the magic of the interaction of all band members then more fool them.
