Always felt Sly Cooper had a comic like feel to it. Never knew it's art was done by an actual comic artist.

Comic artists were super big back around the Sly franchise, I had a lot of them swinging by around my schools for little art classes and I always loved seeing them, we even drew sly once lol

The cherry on top of the comic design is the takedown words appearing when you kill an enemy, following with s horn or trumpet sound like in old cartoons. simply splendid.

When you do that in Sly 4, it simply doesn't have the same impact.☹️

Sly games, especially 2 and 3, are crazy popular in Finland. Fourth game even sold gold in here.

Fellow Finn here. 👋😁🇫🇮 Yeah, 2&3 were some of the few PS2 games to get full Finnish voice-acting. At least during the era (I haven't paid much attention to the situation recently), we tended to get dubs only for children's cartoons and movies (and not even all of those!), never for video games. ...But when we did get dubs, they were usually very high quality! ⭐ ...Even if the voice actors tended to be the same for pretty much everything! 😅 (...But I guess the Americans had that "everything dubbed by 4Kids" era too.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) PS: Thanks for reminding me that in the mission where you take photos of Dimitri, instead of Bentley calling him a "lounge lizard", he just straight up calls him a "gigolo"! 🤣

Great video, thank you for the insights, especially the chase/carmelita stuff! I LOVE the artstyle of the ps2 mascot platformers, especially Sly. In the past we've seen trends in indie game dev of low poly art, we've seen trends where the ps1 art style is mimicked.. I'm thinking *this* type of art style and poly count, while being harder to produce, is probably the sweet spot for ease of creation and range of expression. Its so charming!

I’m surprised you didn’t mention how influential Sucker Punch’s previous game was on Sly. The jagged linework & the prototype designs of Sly were loosely based on the villain of that game.

I agree. There were a few things I wish I had done better and added into the video. And yes, Sucker Punch knew they wanted a raccoon character after their last game Rocket. I suppose I was just eager to talk about the art side but even there I could have done better.

Zag almost kind of looks like Penelope in sly 3. Hear me out, originally Penelope in sly 3 was a cubby big headed mouse but they redesigned her, what if the redesigned version was based off of the cut zag from sly 1. Not to mention being a second technological specialist gives her and Bentley a two of a kind vibe that zig and zag would have had.

I actually met a game developer back in 2011 at a local youth center who said he worked on the Sly Cooper games and I remember asking him was there ever going to be a show based on the characters because I too was into the art style. Needless to say, he wasn't too sure on that but showed me some assets he worked on himself like this boss level where Sly battles a Cuban tiger character. I really wish the Sly Cooper film didn't get canceled.
