Thanks so much for watching, and thanks for your kind words! I tried to run the full gamut: a successful novelist, a sought-after editor and critic, and then me---a clueless, struggling writer, haha! :)

The correct technical term for when the POV character's thoughts bleed into the 3rd person limited narrators narration is called Free Indirect Discourse. It's a technique made popular by Jane Austen. But it's used commonly by writers like Joe Abercrombie and Detective thriller writers like James Ellroy.

Genette uses the term focalisation for when a character's point of view shapes the narration. Free indirect discourse is typically when something of the character's thoughts or internal monologue is reported through the exposition instead of being reported explicitly as internal monologue. They are similar but not the same things.

I tend to like both techniques. Good to know.

@@ACriticalDragon You're right that Free Indirect Discourse (FID) describes the thoughts of a character in the narration, but it can, and does, do much more than that. FID takes on the emotions, feelings, and even voice of the character, too. If done well it can feel as if the narrator IS the POV character: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKiYiZaieZ58orM

@@JerodimusPrime Narrative theorist Genette came up with a different term for a specific concept, if you have an issue with the overlap, blame him. Focalisation is a specific thing, and free indirect discourse is not the 'correct term' for focalisation. They are different terms for related but not the same concept. One that specifically is about character perception and perspective affecting narrative exposition (including order of information, as well of type of information) and one reflecting character thought and conscious position which is included in exposition. Using the different terms allows both to be used more specifically and clearly.

@@ACriticalDragon Fair enough, at the end of the day we're just using different words, but in essence I think we're talking about the same thing. I don't think Free Indirect Discourse is as limited as you state it to be, but I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on that point 😊
