@a.monach76022 жыл бұрын
@Monochromatik the contrast of KL-E-0, Ironsides and Ada is interesting, as it shows how self-awareness in more standard robots can form in a variety of ways. KL-E-0's independent streak was the result of what I can only describe as a logic loophole, similar to Jezebel's reasoning for killing people in Automatron. Ironsides was the result of data corruption due to frequent overheating, which freed him from his more restrictive programming. Ada simply had advanced personality modules installed in her, then made permanently enabled by Jackson.

The first thing that told me that the Glow ZAX was self aware was this dialogue: "You do not register as an individual of sufficient clearance to requisition that information. However, sensors indicate that this facility is no longer operational in its original capacity. Probability favors destruction through nuclear force. Therefore, security concerns are now irrelevant." Any other computer would just blindly follow it's programming, but ZAX did realize that there is no point in keeping those secrets, since there is no real way to cause harm with it anymore.

If ACE truly is on the cusp of true, self-aware sentience, then that's actually pretty sad that it: A) believes that it might be "feeling lonely" and B) has knowledge of the history of past AI that achieved sentience, went mad, and committed suicide. I can't imagine that's going to end too well for it, huh...
@raziyatheseeker2 жыл бұрын
The ZAXes are too cool, and it's fascinating that they all seemed to become self-aware in isolation. ZAX 2.0 updating itself to have intentional flaws by design -- like humans -- speaks volumes. IMO a fair number of the robots fall under this series (or their own). ED-E definitely possesses some awareness as seen by their behavior in lonesome road (they disliking Dr. Grant stands out) and their emotional beeping. Codsworth seems to be somewhat self aware and almost certainly has emotions (the Takahashi interaction and his response to saying synths are machines in tradecraft [which also shows he can understand subtext]) but limited by his programing. The most interesting to me is Takahashi as given their interaction with Codsworth they seems to posses some emotions due to Codsworth trying to comfort it.

There does seem to be a recurring theme with the robots gaining sentience over years through many ways. Like curie, or the other robots, that have done a fruitless job for so long they go against their programming and, essentially, gained sentience while others can even go psycho in the same situation. Although according to curie it seems a limited state of sentience.
@madmatt19982 жыл бұрын
I'd say it is due to their relative lack of Memory space that hampers their ability to truly become sentient As Curie is mostly self-aware but that self-awareness is more pronounced when she has finally inhabits a Synth Body and Mind. Not to mention the programming and fail-safes placed in by Rob-Co or General Atomics. Though what really seems to push them over into Limited Sentience is doing something that is Against their Programming. Example being Curie's terminal, at the insistence of the doctor, Curie has a personal terminal, which she said she cannot have as it is a violation, due to robots being property and thus property cannot own property, yet she is given the in terminal anyway and has multiple entries, thus she is violating her programming and that may have been the first step to Sentience. Codsworth may seemed to have just been at the Sole Survivor's home for 210 years, but as stated in an Affinity Talk, Codsworth went to the Vault Entrance to see if they had lived or perished, then while doing chores, even hoped that perhaps they, their spouse, Shaun, or even Shaun's Children may resurface. Thus, the fruitless maintenance became more of a coping mechanism for him instead of just being programmed routines. The violation being leaving the designated home area to go to the Vault Entrance and the nearby Concord, which lead to hopeful coping.
@TheGanjologist2 жыл бұрын
@@madmatt1998 I think if left alone codsworth really would have gone insane and hostile, and as far as curie I think everything should be taken with a grain of salt comparing her to others tbh. A lot of her story seems to be "truth by perspective" in the sense that it could be her personal truth with heavy personal bias, as well as her possibly wanting to be human more than anything, because to her the goal of best scientist and human are hand in hand with a rather anti scientific conclusion of the undone cannot be done. But unless she's a supercomputer that doesnt move or fractioning her memory like dima she will always have similar limits, she will never be able to take in all the data. If shes really human she will likely forget to make space for new, her reasoning just isnt all there to me in a beating around the bush way. But makes me wonder if there's a noticable difference in the robots that had their routine broken forcefully or broke it of their own accord, as curie seems a middle ground there. Off the top mr handys seem to have their routine broken and develop far wider range of reactions more than other robots. I wonder if it has to do with the programming to be dedicated to a specific task unlike killing bots, maybe the routine is like a drug to them and it's like being trapped in the body of a robotic heroin junkie suffering permanent mental withdrawal.
@madmatt19982 жыл бұрын
@@TheGanjologist An equally valid point. There's also the factor of the "Personality Mode" as Codsworth and Curie, and even Ada from Atomatron and Miss Edna from the Diamond City Schoolhouse seem to be more self-aware than other robots as they have what seems to be a personality mode that was switched on. Obviously this is not confirmed in Codsworth's, Curie's, or Edna's case, however based on how Codsworth treats the Sole Survivor in the prologue, we can assume he's got personality on by default upon first booting, Curie as well to make her a more pleasant assistant in the experiments, and Miss Edna to make her a more Pleasant Teacher. There's also a detail I discovered in my latest playthrough, that if you go out of your way to avoid the main story of the game, in which I avoided Sanctuary and Concord to not get the Minutemen Quests started as I want to do Nuka-World first, when you do eventually get Codsworth, he will start with a NEGATIVE opinion on the Sole Survivor, I know because I did a few things he liked and it flashed "Codsworth Tolerates You" which means Neutral Affinity.
@TheGanjologist2 жыл бұрын
@@madmatt1998 even ED-E might have personality mode on. I think he only beeps because he was damaged. I dont think the military mr handys had it, and although they break routine theyre pretty much all hostile unless it has an owner. But even they have weird cases. Like the one that you can talk your way out of conflict with. Most places with a receptionist handy or servants I assume have personality mode. They are initially neutral, it's really only because they want you to do something to satisfy their programming tho and they're often still in a state of not really recognizing the world. That said, the custom personalities could be a factor, but I'm more inclined to think that's just there for lore cop out purposes. It's like time travel. Somebody asks a question after the fact you cant rationalize an answer to? "It's because time travel". So in essence, that's exactly what the answer is to every unanswered question. And at the same time, it's likely not lol

According to skynet itself, it was created partially using reverse engineered alien (probably zetan, but fallout 2 came before the aliens were named) technology from area 51 (which was intended to be a location in fallout 2, and where Lynette's talking head was originally going to be encountered) We know that the zetans are still observing earth after the Great War thanks to their crashed recon crafts in Fallout 3 and 4 (and Mothership Zeta if it is canon). Perhaps the "Makers" skynet refers to are the Zetans rather than any government officials, as Skynet wouldn't be self aware without Zetan technology.

About Talon Company being joinable like Regulators, I think their roles were switched with Littlehorn, they would have been more like Reilly's Rangers, since they're direct competitors, and Littlehorn/Regulators carry out the Karma hits. Maybe you had a Talon Company quest like the Rangers, where you get armor at the end, but they never finished the quest (or the Ear/Finger perks) despite otherwise fleshing out their faction, so they got switched with the Littlehorn hit squads (who themselves were never finished/started), and the Ear/Finger perks were added as DLC.

One school of thought I lean towards is that the machines and robots of the Fallout world exhibiting notions of self awareness, may not *actually* be all that self aware to begin with. It could be a case of personality constructs, or a scan, general program built around emulating a particular person versus simply becoming one from the ground up. So Codsworth may not actually be sentient (much less sapient) intentionally, but rather crossed a boundary from mimicry of a person into the actual thought processes that would lead to decision making and ethics.

The abnormal brain is an Easter egg reference to the Mel Brooks movie Young Frankenstein. In which Igor (played by Marty Feldman) drops the brain of Hans Delbrück, destroying it, and grabs the next one on the shelf labeled abnormal. When asked by Dr Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) whose brain they put in the monster Igor replies "Abby something... Abby Normal." IIRC if you have too low of science and a low int score, you drop the other brains and can play out a similar conversation with Skynet.

I had a theory about the ZAX style computers, and with MODUS talking to them as well, it makes me wonder a bit as well. All the computers of a higher functions, seem to have a degree of the ability to think and evaluate things. With the Eden's budding awakening, he started to talk to MODUS about non-standard ideas, ones that needed an opinion not a fact. I wonder if it sparked something inside of MODUS. MODUS is... Very nearly fully awakened, or is fully awakened, I haven't played 76 in a while, and Just like with the other computers that are still around that have some level of interactivity, they spent time looking over their materials, trying to become better at their jobs, and the questions in their script, they start to form opinions. It makes me wonder if the very idea of questions in interactive AIs allows for a slow awakening, and the more questions asked, the faster this awakening. It's a strange idea, but one I think has merits.

I think you ruled out the Enclave sending Skynet instructions a little too early. It's possible the Enclave was sending generic hailing messages to AIs, vaults, and military facilities hoping to get a response prompting their reclaiming of tech. Perhaps Skynet received one of these and took it as instructions unbeknownst to the Enclave, which is why the instructions were recieved well after the great war. Skynet may not have been able to respond or interpreted the instructions to not require a response

While it is a bitch to program, it is significantly more powerful , and is, if not one to one, very similar to our own brains in function. The reason we went digital is because of how easy it is to program, as we don't have to teach the hardware how to work. Given how long the fallout games are in the future, these robots most likely have achieved sentience from shear volume of inputs

At 28:00 that's _Arktos_ Pharma. "Arktos" means "bear" in ancient Greek, and their logo is a bear head. Interesting video, and I'm sure you have some other interesting examples in the next video. Fallout 4 alone has several examples of self-aware computers, depending on your definition.

I've always liked the idea of taking to AI characters in games, it makes for an interesting antagonist. The thought process of something as limited as being confined to the size on a room, but and as expensive as 200 years of pure thought uninterrupted by sleep or any physical needs. Weighting a character like that must me difficult, something vastly smarter the the player but wildly naive to experience. I imagine it much like the line from the shining "all work and no play make Jake a dual boy." for an AI " All theory and no practice make ZAX a maniacal AI."

Fun fact: the plot of Fallout Van Bueren included an AI that tracked and hunted the player

Completely agree. I also think the implications of having such an advanced AI hobbled by inferior hardware super interesting (like skynet being transferred to a non cybernetic brain).
@jesseharlan28842 жыл бұрын
Yeah being downloaded in to a human brain must be wild for an AI. In some ways they'd view it as limiting but in an other they could see is as liberating, to be free of mechanical thought. Just the idea of being distracted by a memory or having to sleep must be alian to an AI. Makes me think about Mr. Handys like Curie from fallout 4. Sure it was a custom lab assistant model, but like all other Handy models it wasn't sentient. What's that like for a non sentient program to run on a human brain?

And my thinking on A.C.E unit- it might be a Brotherhood of Steel project, maybe a couple Scrybes decided to invent for once and repurposed ZAX parts to make a special AutoDoc. Since Brotherhood is nearly defunct on Fallout 2 the scattered prcedure discs might have been caused by feeling Brootherhood members taking what they can as the fled.

26:22 the abnormal brain might be a reference to Young Frankenstein, when Igor goes to steal a brain and accidentally brings back a brain the label "abnormal", which he reads as a name, "Abby Normal".

10:40 idk about more recent model, i'd say with his size he's an older model, given how the evolution of computers went with them shrinking from building sized to now even being portable, be it smart phone or laptop

Could the cylindrical designs of some of these come from an upsizing of the pip boy computers which are designed to surround an arm? Obviously not to make it wearable or anything like that but I could see it being built outward around a power source or possibly a heat sink and just continuing the cylindrical design as some engineers would have been familiar with building around something of a similar shape

I find it interesting that all but the first zax became self aware, and the first one only didnt because it was put into a museum and fell into disrepair right quick
@neryxeldra5093 Жыл бұрын
Real quick bud, the ability for an artificial intelligence to learn without human intervention makes it partially sentient, second, an unaware intelligence wouldn't have personality quirks, and the last requirement for an intelligence to be sapient not sentient, there is a difference, is the ability to comprehend and engage in emotions. That means fallout robots are actually on verge of being sapient and are at least sentient to some extent.

I honestly think that the theories that the great war were started by bored AI, (or Aliens, or Vault Tech) are sort of detrimental to the series as a whole. The whole point of Fallout is that humanity doomed itself with nuclear war. EVERYONE was the bad guy, because EVERYONE launched nukes.

I don't know if you will ever see this, but the Huntmaster A.I. may be a reference to a recurring character in Bethesda's other popular title, The Elder Scrolls, Hircine, the daedric prince of the hunt, sometimes referred to as the master of the hunt.

My personal theory about AI and some of them having sentience is the following: We know that radiation in Fallout has different effects than in real life and can mutate creatures, sometimes even to their betterment. What if radiation manipulated their circuits in such a way to form new connections and create something akin to sentience? In our world radiation can damage electronics in high amounts (see Chernobyl, with the robots being damaged by radiation). In a world with irradiated ghouls and mutants living for centuries, it's not far fetched to think radiation might also affect robots. (Also explains why some are more sentient than other, as they might have gotten different doses or effects, just like some people are ghoulified and others have been fried by radiation).
