I would like to think that Octavia was lucky enough to catch a tree root mid-fall, and climb her way back up. But it was most likely that an "emergency responder bot" (I forget the slang term) detected her predicament and caught (rescued) her. If the robots can't provide any emergency response, then the people in this fictional future are doomed...

Painting the diagonals is the optimal solution because it performs the least math and the least traversal. Repeat N times: Paint, move down, move right Paint, Move up n - 1 times Repeat N times: Paint, Move left, move down Paint, Done
@bravomike4734
@bravomike4734 4 жыл бұрын
My exact thoughts. Also for people that didn't exactly get it and are about to say we can't move diagonally, we can't move diagonally directly, here we're moving diagonally by moving 1 pixel right then 1 pixel down and reversed for the painting another diagonal line.

Excellent observation, and that will be a better solution to the problem in terms of speed of operation. To see why, consider this: In each operation, hedge can move just 1 unit horizontal or vertical. If he does a spiral pattern on a 'n by n' square, he would have to move along the 3 corner edges of the square to encounter all the corner squares exactly once. In this process, he has moved 3*(n-1) number of times. Now, to complete the whole cross, he has to also similarly paint the 4 corners of all the smaller squares lying inside the large square. Turns out that the total no. of operations he has to do is 3(n-1)(n)/2 + 2(n-1) (😨 very complicated! If he moved the way you discovered, i.e stepping down the staircase to paint one diagonal first, and doing so again with the second, he would take exactly 2 operations to go from one square to the next (⬇️ + ➡️ = ↘️). In total he would require 2(n-1) steps for each diagonal, and another n-1 to move from end of the first diagonal to beginning of the first. In total: 5(n-1). Now if n is small, both the cases are almost equally fast. But with a large n ( mega sized artwork) like n=100, the spiral case would take 7623 (😱😱) operations, whereas the stepping down algorithm requires only 495! This is an insight on why proper planning and optimization is so essential in programming. A clever algorithm could make the same game run 10times faster with the same cpu!

If yes(I mean if possible), 4)Turn right(I mean come down). 5)Paint red If no, 6)Go to the bottom leftmost box. 7)Paint red. 8)Go to Step 3, But if no, 9)End Programme. The only problem is I do not know if this is correct and efficient. So if wrong feel free to correct me. BTW this programme is truly amazing,it makes me eagerly wait for each and every episode and solve the problem in my way. This programme generated immense interest in me towards computer programming.

Actually, it would be pretty easy to write the typewriter solution to this one in a consistent manner if you use math to determine what pixels can be painted instead of dealing with all that skipping. Try something like this (assuming the pointer starts at the upper left corner pointing right): Int size = grid size For (i = 1 to size) { //For each row... For (j = 1 to size) { //For each square in that row... if (i equals j or i + j equals 2 + size) { paint //Math to determine if we’re on a diagonal. } forward //Move to next square } left // Turn around and go back to the start of the row left For (j = 1 to size) { forward } left //Go down to the next row forward left }

Hey I actually got this one right when I thought of how to spiral method would work! Mostly came for the animation buut I like the learning as well

Honestly, I figured out the spiral method before the hint revealed. This is the first time for me in all the 5 Ep's.

Couldn’t you just.. you know.. X = length of sides Then do the above loop but going mirrored this time. Left one down one.

My initial thought was like this: for i in range(n): for j in range(n): if (i==j or i+j==n-1): paint(i, j) But that spiral pattern is also a interesting and elegant solution. And it can be a recursive solution. def paintFunc(n): if (n==1): paint() else: paint() Forward(n-1) TurnRight() paint() Forward(n-1) TurnRight() paint() Forward(n-1) TurnRight() paint() Forward(n-2) *TurnRight()* # Final turn *Forward(1)* # Go inward by 1 paintFunc(n-2) I think it will be a good way of introducing recursion. EDIT: Thanks Tengux for pointing out the bug here. I typed this solution on my phone right after I watched this video and honestly forget about the final turn and going inward.

I also had the idea of using matrix and painting the pixels where the row no=column no(i=j)

You got a slight bug in your pseudo-code there. You forgot to move inwards at the end before you call your recursive function again, that would translate to a TurnRight(), Forward(1) right before your recursive function call if you want to give the complete solution :) Your poor robot is gonna try to paint out in the middle of nowhere. That is a very nice example of recursion though, I would have to agree.

This reminds me a lot of Logo and turtle graphics from way back when. The programmer would instruct a "turtle" to move across the screen, drawing as it went, kind of like a digital Etch-A-Sketch. People used to draw amazing things with it. I remember one guy drew a very detailed portrait of Einstein.

The spiral and typewriter solutions were nice but I was thinking more of a double dimensional array which would have made it solve easier. Just put 2 for loops which goes through each position of array and if the array position is the one you desire then using if statement color that
