The leading actor Kinya Kitaoji is one of my favorite actors in Japan, but I think he is a little too old to match the leading actress Shino in this film. He was a little too old for Japanese period drama because of his age while making this film.

I remember him playng a Rasputin-like character named Zeiten in a Taiga historical drama mini-series. Not sure if it was Fuurin Kazan or Nobunaga. He was tremendous in the role. You;'re right that he's a little too old to be a perfect match for the Shino character.

After hearing the tip of the katana red hot, that part of the blade annealed. It lost its hardness or temper. It would easily bend or break in a fight. It needed to be heated red hot again and dipped in water.
