5:43 Same ominous sounds that CBS Radio had on 11/22/1963

WCCO Radio would use some of that and add a bit of their own for a news soundeo

This news was so awful but probably not surprising given the assassinations of JFK, Medgar Evers, the deaths of civil rights workers in Mississippi and other violence. This year was tough for America. We first had the uptake in casualties in the bloody Tet offensive, the battle of Khe Sahn and Hue in South Vietnam. RFK was to join JFK, MLK and many American servicemen to the cemetery. I am not sure our country every really has replaced these leaders or recovered from the tough ordeal of 1968.

Back in the days when WCCO completely and utterly dominated the ratings and airwaves in the Twin Cities and the state of Minnesota.

I was stationed at Ft Belvoir, Virginia when this happened. We were in the Military District of Washington, and the fort was almost immediately put on lock down, with no one allowed to leave or enter the base except on specific assignment. I was then working in the personnel dept and some of our workers were bused into DC to help activate the local National Guard. The riots were nationwide and particularly horrible in the DC area. They had eventually brought Airborne troops in from Ft Bragg to help control the riots.

This was a week for news. On Sunday night LBJ made his famous speech where he announced he would not seek reelection and then on Thursday(This was on Thursday) you had the tragic news on the assassination on MLK.
