Thank you for the great video! Here in the UK the i7 ultra core version of the Asus cx54 with touchscreen is available right now in December 2024 at Currys for online order for around GBP 950/ around USD 1,200. This is one of the most exciting three Chromebooks to my liking right now. My other two top choices are the new Lenovo Chromebook duet 11 gen 9 released 2024 and the Samsung galaxy Chromebook plus which boasts allegedly the same low weight as the Asus cx54: 1.17 kg/ lbs 2.6. Today I just used my new Lenovo Chromebook duet 11 gen 9 for the first time and I absolutely love it.

I'm not sure why this laptop isn't getting more love. Like you, I think this is one of the most solid Chromebook Plus releases of 2024.

I'm thrilled that my review was helpful to someone! The lack of reviews for this product was frustrating, and it's what inspired me to start this channel. I moved this video here from my other channel (www.youtube.com/@retrocombs) to keep my retrocomputing content separate from my new tech content. That way, videos like this one would be easier to find. It seems to be working!

you really know your stuff. i also wish google would fix the sleep mode! linux container ability is awesome. i might pick this one up, I like the below 3lbs weight. Thanks for showing that it folds completely flat (need that sometimes).

Appreciate the feedback! I use this one almost everyday. I still stand by my review and this computer still stand up to the daily beating. The more I use the screen, the more I appreciate it. Let me know if you pick one up. It was on sale a few weeks ago. Check my link before you buy to see if it's on sale and shop around.

I've not opened it up to check on the NVME but I kinda suspect that's possible, just don't quote me. Nope, you still need to login first with the password. Once it goes into sleep mode, you can unlock it with the fingerprint reader. Thanks for subbing! Great to have you on board.

Not sure but glad I was able to get a video out there for everyone.

I watched another review of this Chromebook and no mention was made of the fact that you can't login with the fingerprint reader. That would be a deal killer for me. I'm presently using the Asus CX5400 i3 with touch screen. I mistakenly thought that if I bought this Expert model I'd sacrifice the touch screen and get the reader in exchange. I was willing to spend the thousand bucks to buy the HP Dragonfly Plus but apparently not enough people bought it so it was discontinued shortly after launch.

I'm glad this video helped you make a choice. I share your frustration that the fingerprint reader doesn't work. I hope an update will fix it soon. Despite that, this Chromebook has been amazing. Thanks for commenting!

How is the trackpad working out for you? Thinking about buying one with the upgraded 16 gigs of ram.
@retrocombs-tech2 ай бұрын
Works like a charm. It's pretty nice. Again, not quite as nice as the MacBook Pro, but probably better than any other trackpad I've used on a Chromebook.

So irritating. My Samsung 4k OLED Chromebook has a fingerprint sensor - and yes, you have to enter your pin/password first, then if you lock it, biometrics is accessible - meanwhile my Windows XPS laptop can login with fingerprint - missed opportunity in Chrome OS

Agreed. Guess we can dream for this fix in a future Chrome OS upgrade.

I would buy premium chromebook laptop for macbook price if it would be comparable user experience for hardware feeling at least. Same pixel density and brightness, size and weight. Ok with 6+ battery life even. So far closest was hp elite dragonfly chromebook with bonus touchescreen. But asus case design and hinge design, subjectively of course, looking bad even if could be practical
@retrocombs-tech2 ай бұрын
Nothing compares to the Mac with regard to industrial design. I too was hesitant on the hinge design of this Chromebook. It's warmed up on me, but still, it is a bit different and won't be everyone's cup of tea. The HP Elite Dragonfly was on my list too, but the price, yikes! I was looking for a supplemental device to my MacBook Pro and not to replace it, but agree, if you only buy one laptop and it's a Chromebook, don't skimp.

@@retrocombs-tech , how asus hinge work when using on your laps? Instead of flat surface support very narrow area with most of weight concentrated pushing down :(

@@aka7kak8 Admittedly and ironically, I don't use a laptop on my lap very often. I have used it on my lap and don't remember having any troubles with it though.

If Asus wanted to build an actual MacBook competitor it will cost MacBook pricing then most people wouldn't buy it... So please stop comparing it to a MacBook they know they're lame in the pricing that they need to keep within to keep their customers happy

I reference the MacBook so folks know what I'm comparing features to as a baseline. I don't own any Windows laptops so don't have anything to compare on that front, but I understand what you intimating and agree. It's not a fair fight! 😆

I hate how this dude keeps comparing this Chromebook to a MacBook pro that cost literally three times as much... If you're going to pay three times the price yes it should be three times the computer😅 Like make it make sense...
